SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 29th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology, as well as overall quality of presentation. This year’s categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2027 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The submission deadline is September 2. |

ATTA ELEVATORS EXPANDS INTO DALLAS-FORT WORTH MARKET
ATTA Elevators, one of North America's largest independent elevator service providers, announced on July 30 the expansion of its Texas operations into the Dallas-Fort Worth market. Leading the new North Texas office is Regional Vice President-Dallas Jared Anderson, who transitions into the role after leading ATTA's San Antonio operations, where he helped drive operational performance, support field teams and strengthen customer relationships. IN MEMORIAM: GREGORY D. DECOLA (GREG DECOLA SR.)
Gregory D. DeCola (Greg DeCola Sr.) of Congers, NY, a lifelong elevator man in NYC who was passionate about the profession, passed away on July 27 at age 89. Described as an elevator industry "legend," DeCola Sr. was the father of Greg DeCola Jr. of VDA and grandfather of Greg DeCola III of Start Elevator. The senior DeCola began his elevator industry career in the 1950s when demand for commodities like steel dropped after World War II, leading to the closure of the New Jersey mill for which he worked. He soon found a professional home with State Elevator (later acquired by Otis), where he worked his way up from helper to mechanic to foreman to, eventually, supervisor. A witness to a sea change in both industry safety standards and technology, DeCola retired after a long career that saw him transition into elevator consulting and inspecting. He was an active member and past-president of the Sons of Italy Rockland Lodge 2176. "Above all, he was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend and will be missed by all who knew him," his obituary states. In lieu of flowers, donations in DeCola Sr.'s memory may be made to the Gregory DeCola Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of Sons of Italy Rockland Lodge 2176, P.O. Box 223, Blauvelt, NY 10913. |

KONE TO EQUIP 75 LONDON WALL WITH 23 CONNECTED ELEVATORS
KONE announced on July 29 it will equip 75 London Wall, a major office redevelopment project in the City of London, with 23 MonoSpace® 700 DX elevators. To support building operation and efficient people flow for approximately 4,000 daily users, the lift system will also utilize KONE Office Flow, E-Link monitoring and connected services such as KONE 24/7 Connect. The former office building, known historically as Winchester House, stretches roughly 140 m in length along the London Wall — the historic route of the ancient Roman city wall. Read more here

TÜV SÜD MACHINERY ROADSHOW 2026 TO FOCUS ON DIGITALIZATION, AI AND NEW EU RULES
TÜV SÜD, the world’s first Notified Body for the new EU Machinery Regulation, plans to host The Machinery Roadshow 2026 on November 23 at TÜV SÜD headquarters, Haus Algorithmus in Munich. Conducted entirely in English, the event offers an international platform where manufacturers, operators, developers, technology companies and regulatory authorities can come together to shape the future of mechanical engineering. SCHINDLER ELEVATORS, DIGITAL SOLUTIONS HELP ROBOTS NAVIGATE SWISS HOSPITAL
Schindler announced on July 30 it is successfully integrating elevators and digital solutions that help robots — or Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) — navigate HOCH Health Ostschweiz, a major hospital in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The hospital is in the midst of a major expansion that saw the addition of a large operating floor and nearly 100 new patient rooms served by 20 elevators. A further expansion will have six additional elevators. AGV integration, which had already begun in other buildings across the campus, was added as a new requirement during project implementation. Schindler’s experts responded by expanding the system’s design to incorporate robotic transport. Read more here

Brooklyn, NY-based Skyline Elevators tells ELEVATOR WORLD it provided a 10-unit elevator system for 355 Exterior Street — a two-tower residential complex designed by Hill West Architects and developed by The Lightstone Group in Mott Haven, Bronx, NY. The system consists of three three-stop machine-room-less elevators; two overhead-traction elevators traveling at 500 ft/min and making 30 stops with ESI controllers; three overhead-traction elevators traveling at 800 ft/min and making 42 stops with MCE controllers; and two freight elevators. RIGBY TO PARTICIPATE IN 107-MI. APALACHICOLA RIVERTREK
In October, Tallahassee, Florida-based elevator industry veteran Lee Rigby plans to participate in his fourth Apalachicola RiverTrek, a 107-mi, five-day kayaking trip down the Apalachicola River in Florida. Apalachicola RiverTrek is the official awareness and fundraising campaign of Apalachicola RiverKeeper, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and preserving the health of the important Florida waterway. Florida’s largest flowing river, it “supports critical wildlife habitat and fosters the dynamic estuary in Apalachicola Bay,” Rigby observes. Read more here
KONE TO DELIVER 31 VT UNITS TO LONDON SOUTH BANK DEVELOPMENT
KONE announced on August 4 it has been selected to deliver 31 vertical-transportation (VT) units to Vista, a complex mixed-use development on London's South Bank that will "transform the former ITV Television Centre site into a vibrant destination combining offices, cultural spaces and public areas in one of London's most dynamic districts." Developed by Mitsubishi Estate London Ltd. with CO-RE and built by Multiplex Construction Europe Ltd., the development will feature two 26- and 13-story office buildings supported by a six-story podium with a large roof garden. The KONE order includes MonoSpace® 700 DX elevators, MiniSpaceTM HiRi DX double-deck elevators equipped with KONE UltraRope® technology, Transys DX goods elevators and two TravelMasterTM 110 escalators. The VT system is expected to serve approximately 5,700 daily passengers. The development is targeting net-zero carbon operation, as well as BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Platinum certifications. Three new pieces of vertical-transportation (VT) equipment — a new elevator and two replacement escalators — for the Long Island Rail Road's (LIRR) Floral Park and Bellerose stations mark the first accessibility award of the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) 2025-2029 Capital Plan, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on July 29. NYC MTA AND DISABLED COMMUNITY REACH TRUCE IN SUBWAY ELEVATOR DISPUTE
The NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has agreed to more clearly alert the public when elevators are out of service within its vast subway system, which, along with the in-service rate for system lifts reaching nearly 98%, marks the end of a nearly decade-long battle that followed disabled New Yorkers suing the MTA in federal court over alleged shoddy upkeep of subway elevators, The City Reporter is among outlets to report. The latest truce, which still must be signed off on by U.S. District Court Judge George Daniels, was announced during the MTA’s board meeting on July 29. Read more here
BANGLADESH FACES LACK OF REGULATORY FRAMEWORK FOR ELEVATOR STANDARDS
Bangladesh's skyline is rising at an unprecedented pace, but while thousands of lifts are installed each year, no government agency is legally responsible for inspecting lifts throughout their operational life or verifying that they continue to comply with safety standards after installation, The Financial Express reports. Although the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) prescribes technical requirements based largely on European EN 81 safety standards, enforcement remains fragmented, with responsibility divided among several agencies. Industry executives argue that the absence of an independent certification authority makes it difficult to verify product origin and compliance with safety standards before lifts enter service. SKYLINE ELEVATORS SYSTEM FOR NEW BROOKLYN RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
Skyline Elevators tells ELEVATOR WORLD it provided two machine-room-less elevators with Imperial machines and ESI ES2 controllers, which Skyline's David Wertzberger said is "a great product," for 343 Himrod Street in Bushwick, Brooklyn, an eight-story residential building for which the NYC affordable housing lottery launched in July, according to New York YIMBY. Designed by ND Architecture & Design and developed by Chaskel Landau, the property yields 75 residences with amenities that include a dog park, a gym, children's playroom, co-working space, game room, rooftop terrace, sundeck, barbecue grills and a prep kitchen.
HYUNDAI TO HOST SOAP-MAKING CAMPAIGN FOR EMPLOYEES
Hyundai Elevator will hold a natural soap-making campaign for 70 of its employees at the main auditorium of its Chungju Smart Campus in South Korea on August 12, The Herald Business reports. Part of the company's employee-participation environmental, social and governance (ESG) program, the campaign is designed to let employees experience an eco-friendly lifestyle that reduces the use of synthetic detergents and helps protect the water quality of rivers and oceans. Participants will make dish-washing bars using natural ingredients. The event will also serve as a forum for sharing the significance of everyday ESG practices, particularly around water protection and carbon neutrality. The program is structured as a hands-on activity so that employees can make eco-friendly products and use them in their daily lives. This event is one of many in a range of corporate social responsibility initiatives Hyundai Elevator has been carrying out. |

MBTA ESCALATOR INCIDENT RESULTING IN MAN’S DEATH SEES SECOND MISHAP
An escalator at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Davis Station in the Boston suburb of Somerville on which a man’s clothing became entrapped and the man later died earlier this year saw a second, similar incident on July 31, outlets including Boston.com report. In the recent incident, a woman fell on the escalator and suffered a hand injury when her clothing became caught in the machinery. A fellow rider hit the emergency-stop button, an action praised by MBTA. “In the event of an emergency, any member of the public can stop an escalator by pressing the red button labeled ‘STOP’ at the top and bottom of each escalator,” an Authority spokesperson said.
