Fujitec Co., Ltd. announced on September 12 that its group company Fujitec Singapore Corp. Ltd. has become the first Japanese company to obtain certification for elevator maintenance using remote monitoring in Singapore. Established by the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore in 2022 and aimed at enhancing sustainability, accessibility and safety, these regulations are the first of their kind for the remote monitoring of elevators in countless high-rise buildings throughout the country. NORDIC LIFT EXPO TO WELCOME RECORD NUMBER OF VISITORS
Partnering this year with Elevator World, Inc., the Nordic Lift Expo expects to welcome a record number of visitors to Scandic Infra City in Stockholm, Sweden, on November 12. The National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) announces the full program for the upcoming United Convention, bringing together NAEC, the Canadian Elevator Contractors Association, the International Association of Elevator Consultants and Elevator U on September 23-26 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, is now available digitally. The 80-page program includes a complete schedule of events, exhibitor listings and details about special events. In an effort to be more eco-friendly, printed copies of the program will not be available. However, those signed up to receive NAEC emails will receive a "Know Before You Go" email this week containing information to help them prepare for the convention. Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 27th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology and overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2025 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The submission deadline is September 30.

Over the past year, four high rises housing low-income residents accounted for 15% of all emergency calls about broken elevators to the Detroit Fire Department, Outlier Media reports, citing WDIV. The television station conducted an investigation in the wake of an August fire at the 22-story Kamper Stevens Apartments for senior citizens in which an 86-year-old woman died. Supertech Realtors' Supernova luxury development in Noida, India, consisting of four towers up to 80 stories tall and India's biggest commercial defaulter, has gotten a new lease on life thanks to INR7.5 billion (US$89.4 million) in funding from alternative investment firm Kotak Investment Advisors Ltd., The Times of India was among outlets to report in August. TK Elevator (TKE) announced on September 17 it has been awarded a major escalator modernization contract to modernize numerous escalators serving subway stations in Cologne, Germany. The project includes 23 new victoria heavy-duty escalators and the MAX Internet of Things smart monitoring and digital technology solution to minimize maintenance and downtime. TKE observed its digital solutions were a key factor in public transportation authority Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG (KVB) awarding it the contract. The project began in spring 2024 with the first escalator installed at the busy Neumarkt station in the heart of the city. The final escalator replacement is scheduled in spring 2027. Ater installation, TKE will handle maintenance of the new escalators. Altree Developments' proposed 23-story tower at 1705 Weston Road in Toronto has grown since 2020 to 43 stories with nearly double the number of residential units, in line with Ontario's goals for projects within major transit station areas, Urban Toronto reports. Tashkent Metro in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, has provided answers as to why eight new escalators for three metro stations cost UZS10 billion (US$783,961), or UZS1.3 billion (US$101,914) per escalator, UZ Daily reports. In response to allegations of purchasing the units at inflated prices, metro officials said the heavy-duty escalators — designed to operate up to 20 h per day with a full load — are significantly more expensive than standard models. SKYTRAIN ESCALATOR PROJECT MOVES TO SECOND PHASE
TransLink is reopening the Millennium Line escalators at Commercial–Broadway SkyTrain Station in Vancouver, Canada, on September 27. On the same day, the second phase of the escalator replacement project will begin on the north escalators, which connect to the Expo Line platforms. During construction, the staircase accompanying these escalators will also close for safety; the elevator will remain open. Alternate escalator, elevator and stair access to the Expo Line platforms will be available across the street on the south side of East Broadway Avenue. These escalators have been in operation for more than 20 years. The new escalators are more durable and feature variable speed to save power. They are also easier for staff to maintain and will minimize future downtime. This CAD10.5 million (US$7.7 million) project is funded through the TransLink Capital Program and is expected to be completed in fall 2025.
