HYUNDAI ELEVATOR SIGNS MOU WITH SAUDI ARABIA
On May 3, Hyundai Elevator signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Cultural Affairs Department of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to exchange human resources (HR) and technology, the Korea IT Times reports. Hyundai Elevator plans to build a strategic network with the Saudi government and industry by activating HR and technology exchanges in various fields such as sales, service and installation. ATIS WELCOMES INDUSTRY VETERANS ROBERTSON AND TRAGASH

ELEVATOR ASSOCIATION OF MINNESOTA PLANS ANNUAL GOLF OUTING
The Elevator Association of Minnesota (EAM) plans to host its annual Golf Outing on June 20 at The Links at Northfork Golf Course & Banquet Center. The event is from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m., with a shotgun start at noon. On-site registration starts at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch at 11 a.m. and a full buffet dinner at a post-round reception. CECA 1939 CLUB TO GATHER AFTER GOLF CLASSIC
The Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) 1939 Club, a group of CECA members between the ages of 19 and 39, will meet on June 12 for cocktails following the CECA golf tournament in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The event, held 4-6 p.m. at the Marriott on the Falls lobby bar, will serve as an opportunity for members to socialize and learn about activities planned for the 2024 year. Read more here

ARITEC NEW MATERIALS GROUP ANNOUNCES ALBERTO SASSI PARTNERSHIP
Luzern, Switzerland-headquartered Aritec New Materials Group on May 3 announced a strategic partnership with Alberto Sassi S.p.A., the Italian company known for its elevator machine technology. Elevator belts, Aritec stated, offer numerous advantages over traditional traction rope systems, including longer service life of up to 15 years, quieter performance and reduced environmental impact. Belts' polyurethane composition requires less power for the same load, resulting in up to 35% energy savings. The collaboration combines Aritec's ARIBELT 30 F3.4 with Alberto Sassi's new-generation G-180BS compact gearless machine optimized for the latest generation of belts. Certified for high speeds in excess of 600 rpm, it supports 2/1 roping systems with small traction diameters of 85-100 mm. With driving torques from 90 to 180 Nm and capacities up to 1000 kg, the G-180BS "enhances elevator performance and design significantly," Aritec observed.

OTIS SELECTED BY SMRT TRAINS TO SERVICE 498 NSEWL VT UNITS
Singapore's SMRT Trains has selected Otis to service 498 vertical-transportation (VT) units — 446 escalators and 52 elevators — on the North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL) for five years, Otis announced on April 30. Starting this year, Otis will examine, inspect and test the escalators and elevators to ensure they remain serviceable and safe. Read more here

KONE PROVIDES NEW ELEVATORS FOR REPOSITIONED MANHATTAN OFFICE BUILDING
KONE tells ELEVATOR WORLD it provided 16 new elevators with destination dispatch for the former CBS headquarters in Midtown Manhattan, NY, a 38-story office building originally designed by Eero Saarinen that opened in the mid-1960s and is now known as Black Rock. New York YIMBY reported in April that a repositioning undertaken by Harbor Group International (HGI) was complete at 51 West 52nd Street. Read more here
 
ALIMAK GROUP COMMITS TO SCIENCE BASED TARGETS INITIATIVE
Sweden-headquartered Alimak Group announced on May 7 it has committed to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and will set greenhouse gas (GHG) emission-reduction targets aligned with the Paris Agreement. "SBTi is the next logical step for the Group, and it underscores our ongoing efforts to decrease our environmental impact and drive positive change across our value chain," observed Alimak Group CEO Ole Kristian Jødahl. Alimak Group said it has made significant progress toward establishing a solid emissions baseline through extensive analysis of both direct emissions and those associated with the value chain. This has enabled the company to implement tangible improvements, with ongoing initiatives to drive further progress. A collaboration among the Carbon Disclosure Project, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and the World Wide Fund for Nature, the SBTi helps companies set ambitious, science-based GHG emission-reduction goals.

KONE MONOSPACE MRLS FOR MID-RISE BUILDINGS IN TWO NYC BOROUGHS
KONE tells ELEVATOR WORLD it provided one MonoSpaceTM 500 DX machine-room-less (MRL) elevator each to two new seven-story residential buildings in Flushing, Queens, and Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. DIRECT-ENTRY RESIDENTIAL ELEVATORS GAINING POPULARITY IN THE U.S.
A symbol of privacy, exclusivity and efficiency, direct-entry elevators to transport residents straight to their homes in luxury towers are gaining popularity in the U.S., says the architect who pioneered the concept, Mansion Global reports. Robert M. Swedroe Architects Partner Joseph Swedroe observed the concept is "predicated on the idea of eliminating hallways for apartment access and implementing direct vertical access to every apartment." NEW JERSEY ELEVATOR MISHAP THAT OCCURRED IN 2023 HEADS TO COURT
A July 2023 incident in which a 5-year-old girl's arm was injured as a result of it getting stuck between the elevator door and shaft on the seventh floor of a mid-rise condominium building she and her family were visiting in Hoboken, New Jersey, has now headed to court and is sparking concerns among building residents, the New York Post is among outlets to report. SUPERYACHT DESIGN FIRST TO INCLUDE TELESCOPIC ELEVATOR
As part of a final-year project, Finn Berg, who recently completed a bachelor's degree course in Automotive and Transport Design at the University of Coventry in the U.K., designed a superyacht explorer he calls EXO-X, autoevolution reports. Superyacht explorers are capable of reaching remote locations and are loaded with exploration and research gear, along with having fancy amenities that sometimes rival, or even beat, luxury yachts. EXO-X has all of this while also being the first superyacht explorer (concept) in the world to feature a telescopic observation elevator, which rises up through the hardtop of the sundeck to offer a high vantage point. According to Berg, an observation point of this type has never been included before in superyacht design. EXO-X has a total length on water of 63.3 m with a beam of 11.3 m and a draft of 3.3 m. It offers accommodation for 12 guests, a crew of 14 and additional quarters for a research team of four. EXO-X also features a helipad, a large garage that can hold everything from tenders and Jet Skis to rescue boats, several outdoor lounging areas, including one underwater, and a sundeck.

ESCALATOR MALFUNCTION RESULTS IN INJURIES IN DELHI, INDIA
Approximately 10 people sustained injuries as a result of an escalator reversing direction at the Kashmere Gate metro station in Delhi, India, on May 6, The Hindu is among outlets to report. A Delhi Metro Rail Corp. official said the incident happened at approximately 6:40 p.m., with passengers losing their balance and falling on one another. The unit was then switched off. It is now out of service as mechanics work to determine what caused the malfunction.

BLACKFRIARS TOWERS SCHEME RECOMMENDED FOR APPROVAL
Planning officers have recommended approval of Foster + Partners' plans for a mammoth mixed-use development at 18 Blackfriars Road in Southwark, London, featuring a 45-story skyscraper alongside 22- and 40-story residential blocks and a central plaza for U.S. developer Hines, Architects' Journal reports. The development would provide approximately 433 homes, including 40.5% designated affordable, and 2,400 m2 of affordable workspace. Read more here
