SAATI RETIRES AFTER LONG CAREER WITH EPCO
Hibba Saati recently retired after a nearly 50-year career with EPCO Elevator Products Corp., based in Wayne, New Jersey. Saati holds a degree from American University in Beirut, Lebanon, where she studied mechanical engineering and design. She began her EPCO career in the engineering department as an elevator fixture designer, then served as engineering and business development manager — a role she held for the past 25 years. The NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) announced it has extended its Third-Party Elevator Inspection Pilot Program through December 31. The program allows approved elevator agencies to perform acceptance tests for new elevator installations, alterations or modernization work. These acceptance tests must be performed in the presence of a witnessing elevator agency, which cannot be affiliated with the elevator work or the approved elevator agency that performed that work. Vertical-transportation (VT) industry veteran Christopher Short has joined the Wurtec team as director of Connected Elevator Solutions, Wurtec recently announced. Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) in India has received and accepted two bids for construction of entry/exist structures that will enable additional escalators to be built along Corridor 5, Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Rail project, outlets including Metro Rail News report. Stretching 47 km with 45 stations, including 39 at grade level or elevated, between Madharavaram and Sholinganuallur, Corridor 5 is also known as the Red Line and is among CMRL Phase 2 projects slated for completion by the end of 2028. The winning bidders for the entry/exit structures are Saraswathi Engineering Construction Ltd. and Priya Engineering Projects Pvt. Ltd. Work will include civil, architectural and finishing work for the elevated stations along Corridor 5.
TOSHIBA'S ELEVATOR STAKE COULD SHIFT TO KONE OR ANOTHER PLAYER
Japan's Toshiba could divest part or all of its approximately 80% stake in Toshiba Elevator & Building Systems as Finland's KONE — which already owns slightly less than 20% of Toshiba Elevator — is among likely potential buyers of more shares, The Japan Times is among outlets to report, citing Bloomberg and "people with knowledge of the matter." KONE has expressed its interest in increasing its stake in Toshiba Elevator in discussions with the Japanese group, the source said. TK Elevator (TKE) has partnered with Make A Difference (MAD) to strengthen access to education, mentorship and life skills development for underprivileged children and youth across India, The CSR Universe reports. The initiative supported 289 children and young adults over the past year, spanning seven cities: Mumbai, Chennai, Cochin, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Goa and Bengaluru. Johnson Lifts, which holds an approximately 20% share in India's roughly 1.5 lakh (150,000)-unit vertical-transportation (VT) market, sees home elevators, public infrastructure and high-speed, high-rise elevators as growth opportunities domestically, DT Next reports. THE U.K.'S LEEA APPOINTS NEW CHAIR OF THE BOARD
David Cormack commenced his two-year tenure as the new chair of the board for the U.K.'s Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) on January 1, taking over the role from Oliver Auston. Serving as vice chair alongside Auston for the last two years, he has also been a member of LEEA's Technical Committee. Cormack has spent his entire career in the lifting industry, having started as an apprentice with Coubro & Scrutton – a founder member and keen supporter of the Chain Testers Association, which evolved into LEEA. Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and C.Y. Lee & Partners have been selected through an international competition to design the National Innovation, Creativity and Finance Center (NICFC) in Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China, the Council on Vertical Urbanism is among outlets to report. Anchoring the Taiwan capital's Beimen District, the 175,000-m2 development will feature walkability, connectivity and historic preservation, as the adjacent 1930 Taipei Beimen Post Office will be restored and incorporated into the podium of a 47-story tower anchoring the plan. 20 PASSENGERS RESCUED FROM STALLED TOKYO SKYTREE ELEVATOR
Twenty passengers, including children, were rescued from a stalled elevator at the 634-m Tokyo Skytree broadcasting tower and tourist attraction in the Sumida Ward of Tokyo, Japan, on February 22, outlets including Japan Today report. According to Tobu Tower Skytree Co., two elevators that travel between the fourth floor and the 350-m-high observation deck stopped at approximately 8:15 p.m. — an elevator carrying 20 passengers going down and an empty elevator going up. Developer Arada has awarded an AED1.55-billion (US$422-million) construction contract for the 40-story W Residences at Dubai Harbour to Dubai-based Engineering Contracting Co., Zawya reports. Excavation and piling work has already begun following the award of an AED51-million (US$13.8 million) contract to APCC Piling & Marine Contracting. The W Residences will boast nearly 500 luxury branded residences within three towers, the longest infinity pool in Dubai, a 40,000-ft2 fitness center, a lounge, a music recording studio, a movie theater, restaurants and more.
