Nominations are now open for the 2024 Ellies Awards Program and will be accepted through July 12. This annual elevator industry awards program recognizes North American elevator and escalator vertical-transportation industry businesses that go above and beyond for their customers, employees, communities and the industry as a whole. Anyone can nominate a business, including your own, and the nominees will be voted on by you from August 1-14 to decide the winners. The Ellie Awards will then be presented at the UNITED Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in September. The voting categories are Best Consultancy, Best Family-Owned Business, Best Inspection Company, Best Minority/Woman/Veteran-Owned, Best OEM, Best Supplier (Accessibility, Cabs/Interiors/Finishes, Communication Systems, Complete Systems, Controllers, Doors/Door Operators, Motors, Other, Ropes/Traveling Cables, Safety Products, Software and Special Application Lifts) and Best Contractor (North, South, East, West and Canada). VDA ACQUIRES CANADA'S GUNN CONSULTANTS
East Hanover, New Jersey-headquartered VDA, Inc. announced on July 9 it has acquired Canada-based vertical-transportation (VT) consultancy GUNN Consultants. GUNN was founded in 1983 as an engineering consulting firm specializing in elevators, escalators, moving walks and other types of VT. It was the first elevator consulting firm in Western Canada. Eric Peterson is president and CEO of GUNN, headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, with offices in Calgary and Toronto. Industry leaders in their respective territories, VDA and GUNN have forged a partnership that expands each company's market reach throughout North America and "provides clients with best-in-class service offerings without infringement of borders." The companies believe that, combined, they have "the best people and technology in the industry," benefitting from enhanced capabilities, market expansion and shared resources. CLADDAUGH ELECTRONICS APPOINTS JOHNSON BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CONSULTANT

FUJITEC IMMERSIVE ELEVATOR FEATURING LIGHTS AND MUSIC WINS AWARD
Three Fujitec-affiliated companies won an Award of Excellence in the Digital Signage Awards 2024 entertainment category for the Immersive Elevator, which "provides people with an emotional experience through the fusion of LED vision and a musical sound," Fujitec announced on July 8. SOUTHWESTERN GERMANY'S ALOIS KASPER EXPANDS FOOTPRINT WITH ACQUISITION
Alois Kasper GmbH, founded in 1945 in the western German state of Saarland, announced it has acquired Trierer Aufzugbau Baasch und Didong GmbH, further expanding its footprint in the Saarland-Rhine-Main area, effective July 1. Alois Kasper, a KONE subsidiary since 2017, said the move enables it to meet growing demand for "high-quality elevator solutions and services in the region." Read more here
 
UZBEKISTAN SEEKS PRIVATE SECTOR HELP TO RELEASE VT IMPORTS STUCK IN CUSTOMS
Vertical-transportation (VT) equipment importers in Uzbekistan are seeking private-sector help to release at least 330 pieces of VT equipment stuck in customs warehouses in the wake of an import halt that took effect in March, YangiUylar reports. Elevators and escalators imported from nearly 50 different manufacturers are under customs control in warehouses. Read more here

SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 27th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology and overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2025 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The submission deadline is September 30.

ACCESS BDD RECEIVES WHICH? ACCREDITATION

1916 ELEVATOR IN MISSOURI COURTHOUSE CLOSED FOR REPAIRS
A more-than-100-year-old cage elevator serving the Jasper County Courthouse in Carthage, Missouri, is closed so it can undergo vital repairs, The Joplin Globe reports. The courthouse was built in 1894, and the elevator was added in 1916. A county commissioner said a recent inspection found a faulty gear mechanism that makes the unit unsafe to operate. OTIS VIETNAM TO PROVIDE AND SERVICE 28 ELEVATORS FOR HANOI RESIDENTIAL TOWER
Otis Vietnam announced on July 8 it has been awarded a contract to provide and service four SkyRise® and 24 AriseTM elevators for LUMIÈRE Evergreen, a 40-story luxury apartment tower developed by Masterise Homes in Hanoi. Installation is slated for completion in October 2025, and Otis Vietnam will service the units through June 2028. NOBLE ELEVATOR SYSTEM FOR LOWER EAST SIDE MIXED-USE BUILDING
Noble Elevator Co., Inc. Vice President Thomas Dutton tells ELEVATOR WORLD Noble provided a three-elevator system for 139 Bowery, a 14-story mixed-use building on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The elevators are machine-room-less units from Delaware Elevator with Torin machines and Motion Control Engineering Motion 4000 controllers. Read more here
 
ELEVATOR SOLUTIONS INVESTMENT CO. ACQUIRES TWO COMPANIES
Elevator Solutions Investment Co., a subsidiary of Mayar Holding Co., signed a binding purchase agreement to acquire the entire share capital of Saudi Installation Testing and Maintenance Co. (ITM Co. LLC) and Smart Elevator Co., argaam reports. Both companies were acquired for SAR40 million (US$10.6 million) and a 28% stake in Elevator Solutions, according to a statement to the Saudi Arabia stock exchange, Tadawul. The acquisition aims to expand Elevator Solutions' market share, provide customers with integrated solutions, diversify the company's product portfolio and boost its share in the Saudi elevator market. The relevant financial impact is expected to appear during the second half of 2024, the statement added.

MISSING BOLTS LED TO DEADLY STOCKHOLM CONSTRUCTION ELEVATOR COLLAPSE
Missing bolts caused a construction elevator to collapse in a Stockholm, Sweden, suburb in December 2023, killing five people, the Swedish Investigation Authority determined, the Associated Press is among outlets to report. The deadly crash "was caused by failure to perform relevant safety inspections of the hoist assembly," the Authority observed. Read more here

OTIS INDIA INTRODUCES DESIGN SERIES INCLUDING 360 COMBINATIONS
On July 8, Otis India introduced the Modular Series, 360 possible design combinations that give customers the flexibility to customize the look and feel of an elevator. RTD-DENVER'S OPEN ELEVATOR DOOR POLICY CURBS SERVICE CALLS
A pilot program initiated in March by the Regional Transportation District in Denver, Colorado (RTD-Denver) is resulting in a significant reduction in calls for service, and RTD plans to expand the program — which keeps elevator doors open when elevators are not in use — beyond the three original stations, Denverite is among outlets to report. 25-YEAR-OLD FALLS TO HER DEATH DOWN ELEVATOR SHAFT IN ITALY
A 25-year-old woman fell four stories down an empty elevator shaft to her death in Fasano, southern Italy, on July 1, Unilad is among outlets to report. The incident occurred in an apartment building. When the woman called the elevator on the fourth floor, the doors opened but the lift cabin was not there. Read more here

IEEE USA E-BOOK FIFTH IN SERIES SHOWCASING WOMEN ENGINEERS
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) USA has released a new e-book featuring the story of Judith Resnick, a female engineer and member of the Space Shuttle Challenger crew. Marking the fifth in IEEE USA's "Famous Women Engineers in History" e-book series, the story is about a woman who "didn't want to be seen as a woman astronaut or a Jewish astronaut — just as an astronaut." MULTIPLEX UK TAPPED TO BUILD CITY OF LONDON'S NEWEST TOWER
Multiplex UK has been tapped by AXA IM Alts to build the City of London's newest skyscraper — the 36-story, 60,400-m2 office tower 50 Fenchurch Street, Construction News reports. Located in the Financial District neighboring the Walkie Talkie, 50 Fenchurch Street was designed by Eric Parry Architects to achieve BREEAM Outstanding and net-zero operation, incorporating approximately 70 species of plants on landscaped gardens and terraces. SEVEN-TOWER TOD GREENLIT IN MELBOURNE'S BOX HILL
Through the Fast-Track Program of the Victoria, Australia, government, Vicinity Centres has won approval for a masterplan that includes seven towers ranging from 19 to 50 stories that will deliver 1,700 new homes to one of Melbourne's fastest-growing communities — Box Hill, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat reports, citing The Urban Developer. Designed by Bates Smart, the transit-oriented development (TOD), dubbed Box Hill Central North, will be clustered around the Suburban Rail Loop. Read more here

ENGINEERINGUK PUSHES FOR NATIONAL ENGINEERING WORKFORCE STRATEGY
EngineeringUK, an independent, not-for-profit organization that supports the engineering and technology sectors, is encouraging the new government to form a national engineering and technology workforce strategy to address the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and workforce shortage. "FLOATING" ADDITION PROPOSED ATOP HISTORIC TORONTO APARTMENT BUILDING
Developer ProWinko has proposed a 10-story addition designed by Alliance that would "float" one story above a historic, four-story apartment building in Toronto's Annex neighborhood, Urban Toronto reports. Bringing the 1905 property known as Spadina Gardens to 15 stories, the 55.5-m structure would add 70 additional residences to an existing 24. Read more here
