KONE SHAREHOLDERS APPROVE US$34-BILLION TKE ACQUISITION
At an extraordinary general meeting on June 3 at company headquarters in Helsinki, Finland, KONE shareholders approved the company's planned US$34-billion acquisition of German rival TK Elevator (TKE), a deal that would "propel KONE past U.S. rival Otis, create a European champion and strengthen its presence in the Americas," Reuters is among outlets to report. Antitrust scrutiny means closing the deal with TKE owners Advent, Cinven and others could take up to 18 months, and divestments in certain geographical areas are likely, KONE Chief Financial Officer Ilkka Hara told the source. TKE LAUNCHES EOX REBUILD TO MODERNIZE EUROPE’S AGING ELEVATOR INFRASTRUCTURE
TK Elevator (TKE) on June 8 announced the launch of EOX Rebuild, a full replacement solution within TKE's EOX elevator family designed specifically for existing low-rise buildings. KONE LAUNCHES FIRST-EVER SPINOUT COMPANY, VAELLA
Helsinki, Finland-headquartered KONE announced on June 10 the launch of its first-ever spinout company, VAELLA, aimed at tackling a growing challenge facing cities worldwide: how to operate increasingly crowded public infrastructure more safely and efficiently when physical expansion fails to keep pace with demand. Led by co-founder and CEO Fabien Fédy, VAELLA acts as an AI-powered operational layer for complex environments such as metro systems, airports, transit hubs, stadiums and large public buildings. Rather than relying on additional cameras or surveillance infrastructure, the platform combines existing operational data sources to provide real-time situational awareness and predictive insights for facility operators. VAELLA has already been piloted in real operational environments in Helsinki and Brussels, testing applications such as crowd build-up detection, passenger incident response, accessibility disruption management and adaptive energy optimization.

VT INSTALLERS/REPAIRERS NAMED TO LIST OF JOBS RELEVANT TO WORLD CUP LOGISTICS
Zety, a leading resumé templates service, has released its World Cup Career Index, ranking the top 15 jobs that play a critical role in the FIFA World Cup 2026’s operations, support long-term career growth and typically do not require a bachelor's degree, and elevator and escalator installers and repairers were named No. 6 on the list. To determine the list, Zety researchers analyzed publicly available World Cup planning materials and identified occupations aligned with at least one of five key operational areas: transportation and crowd logistics, venue operations, public safety, infrastructure and tourism support. Vertical-transportation installers and repairers were listed with a mean annual salary of US$109,820 and a projected growth rate of 5%. By combining labor market trends with operational relevance, the analysis identifies the occupations best positioned to benefit from both tournament-related demand and broader workforce growth.

KONE PARTNERS ON VOCATIONAL SKILLS COMPETITION IN STOCKHOLM
Together with Stockholm-based higher vocational institution Zenter Botkyrka, KONE partnered with the Swedish Association of Lifts and Escalators for Yrkes-SM, a vocational skills competition for young people held in Stockholm on May 4-6. Over three days, competitions were organized in a wide range of professions including, for the first time, lifts and escalators, which saw a total of 12 competitors. Elements involved renovating a valve block, connecting an emergency phone and connecting a shaft riser, with four “incredibly skilled” technicians making it to the final — three from KONE and one from Motum Örebro. Louis Karlsson from KONE Gothenburg was ultimately crowned the winner, with Elliot Holm from KONE Stockholm taking a very close second. With 31,642 visitors and 80 professions represented on-site, the 2026 edition of Yrkes-SM was the largest thus far. Look for more about the competition in an upcoming issue of EW and EW Europe. — reported by EW Correspondent Madeleine Olausson

FERMATOR REVOLUTIONIZES PLANT LOGISTICS, BOOSTS SAFETY WITH ROBOTICS
Fermator, a leading manufacturer of automatic elevator doors, recently made major strides in safety and efficiency at its Falset plant in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, with the help of the MiR1200 Pallet Jack Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR)  and the integration expertise of industrial intralogistics specialist MTS Tech. The pallet jack is manufactured by Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR), a Teradyne Robotics company. At the 14,000-m2 Falset plant, which manufactures standard doors for newly installed elevators, internal transport of materials between the warehouse and production lines was identified as a weak point since it depended entirely on forklifts and pallet jacks driven by operators. U.S. CPSC RECALLS RESIDENTIAL ELEVATOR INTERLOCK SWITCH
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on June 4 recalled the SUNS International SS6291 solenoid residential elevator interlock switch due to potential falls or crushing incidents involving serious injury or death. The approximately 7,000 affected switches can become stuck in a retracted position, allowing the exterior door to remain unlocked and posing risk of serious injury or death if the elevator is called to another floor. The recall involves SS6291 switches produced from August 20, 2024, through November 6, 2025, with date codes 2431 through 2543. Read more here

Freedom of Information data obtained by The Standard show that 153 out of 566 — approximately 27% — of escalators serving Transport for London's (TfL) Tube network are operating past their shelf life. Elly Baker Labor’s transport lead on the London Assembly, said TfL gives escalators a 20-year midlife and 40-year total lifespan, which helps the government body determine when renewal work should occur. In recent years, however, Baker said she thinks TfL has moved toward condition-based monitoring to determine when major maintenance or replacement is needed. Read more here
