KONE SHAREHOLDERS APPROVE US$34-BILLION TKE ACQUISITION |
At an extraordinary general meeting on June 3 at company headquarters in Helsinki, Finland, KONE shareholders approved the company's planned US$34-billion acquisition of German rival TK Elevator (TKE), a deal that would "propel KONE past U.S. rival Otis, create a European champion and strengthen its presence in the Americas," Reuters is among outlets to report. Antitrust scrutiny means closing the deal with TKE owners Advent, Cinven and others could take up to 18 months, and divestments in certain geographical areas are likely, KONE Chief Financial Officer Ilkka Hara told the source. The acquisition is "the largest sell-side private equity deal in Europe since records began in 1980," according to the London Stock Exchange, Reuters observed. It required a two-thirds majority approval that had essentially been secured in advance, with 74% of shareholders pre-committing to backing it.

(l-r) Carrajat and Master Elevator Parts President Don Gelestino, Jr.
Master Elevator Parts, founded in 2012 by Patrick Carrajat and his wife, Kathleen, and based in Long Island City (LIC), on May 31 announced Carrajat passed away at age 82. Carrajat spent more than six decades in the elevator industry, starting at age 11 working with his father in NYC. Over his career he became a respected repairman, manufacturer, consultant and historian. He served as chief operating officer of a major elevator service firm and founded his own service company prior to co‑founding Master Elevator Parts. Under his leadership, the company grew into a leading supplier of obsolete and hard‑to‑find elevator and escalator parts, known for rapid response and quality. Carrajat's contributions extended beyond business. He authored the book History of the American Elevator Industry, wrote numerous articles for ELEVATOR WORLD, taught continuing‑education classes on elevator safety and compiled a personal collection of more than 4,000 artifacts that became the Elevator Historical Society. The museum in LIC displays vintage control panels, floor indicators, manuals and other equipment. Carrajat also served as a sought‑after expert witness in elevator and escalator litigation, testifying in more than 100 trials since 1989. — submitted by Master Elevator Parts

VT INSTALLERS/REPAIRERS NAMED TO LIST OF JOBS RELEVANT TO WORLD CUP LOGISTICS |
Zety, a leading resume templates service, has released its World Cup Career Index, ranking the top 15 jobs that play a critical role in the FIFA World Cup 2026’s operations, support long-term career growth and typically do not require a bachelor's degree, and elevator and escalator installers and repairers were named No. 6 on the list. The 2026 World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 and began in Mexico City with the final to be hosted in New York/New Jersey. To determine the list, Zety researchers analyzed publicly available World Cup planning materials and identified occupations aligned with at least one of five key operational areas: transportation and crowd logistics, venue operations, public safety, infrastructure and tourism support. Vertical-transportation installers and repairers were listed with a mean annual salary of US$109,820 and a projected growth rate of 5%. By combining labor market trends with operational relevance, the analysis identifies the occupations best positioned to benefit from both tournament-related demand and broader workforce growth.

KONE PROVIDES TWO UNITS FOR McLEAN PLACE IN THE BRONX |
Construction has topped out on McLean Place, a 15-story residential building in Morrisania, Bronx, that will yield 72 supportive housing units in a mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts, New York YIMBY reports. KONE tells ELEVATOR WORLD it supplied two KONE MonoSpace 500 DX elevators, one with 14 landings and one with 15 landings for the project. Forty-three of the apartments will be set aside for domestic violence survivors and their children exiting the shelter system. McLean Place was designed to achieve Passive House certification and will be fully electric. McLean Place’s anticipated completion date is slated for early next year. The closest subways from the project are the B and D trains at the 167th Street station to the west along the Grand Concourse. The Melrose station on the Metro-North Railroad’s Harlem Line is also about a 10-min walk to the south along Park Avenue.

UPGRADES AT KEY QUEENS SUBWAY STATION INCLUDE OTIS ELEVATORS |
Upgrades announced by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on June 11 include two new Otis elevators — one three-stop unit connecting the street to the mezzanine and northbound platform and one two-stop unit connecting the mezzanine and southbound platform — at the Rockaway Boulevard Subway Station in Ozone Park, Queens. In addition to three new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant staircases and new platform ADA boarding areas, the elevators enhance accessibility, safety and circulation for approximately 5,600 daily riders. Work also included new CCTV cameras, braille signage, an updated fire alarm system and more. The bundle of accessibility upgrades was the first in MTA history to be awarded under a public-private-partnership model, which requires the design/build contractor to finance the project with equity and bonds reimbursed in installments only if the new assets are built and maintained to MTA standards. The design/build team included Urbahn Architects, Dewberry, Forte Construction and EAE Halmar International.

SMALLER ELEVATORS PART OF MAMDANI’S “BLOCK BY BLOCK” HOUSING PLAN |
Incorporating smaller elevators into some buildings is among measures being looked at as part of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's "Block by Block" master housing plan unveiled in on May 26, the New York Post reported. Late this year, the "Affordable and Efficient Code Reform" task force led by the Department of Buildings (DOB) and bringing together engineers, contractors and the DOB will examine NYC's "decades-old" building codes to look for ways to save developers money and bring plans to fruition. Cost-saving measures for new buildings ranging from affordable housing to office-to-residential conversions and schools will be sought. Smaller elevators are already being considered, as the task force's formation comes on the heels of a related DOB program set to launch this year to allow smaller-than-currently-allowed elevators for existing walk-up buildings. According to the city, only 34% of such apartments have elevators. Current city code requires elevators that can accommodate a 7-ft stretcher and wheelchairs, and upcoming discussions about whether to allow the small elevators is expected to be "contentious," according to DOB Commissioner Ahmed Tigani. The DOB and Mamdani's efforts come amid an affordable housing shortage that Tigani describes as a "crisis."
