IEES CALL FOR SPEAKERS ON "CONSOLIDATION & GLOBALIZATION'S IMPACT ON MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY"
The International Elevator & Escalator Symposium (IEES), planned on November 12-13 at ATLANTIS in Paradise Island, Bahamas, has issued a call for speakers on the symposium theme "Consolidation & Globalization's Impact on Maintenance and Safety." The first step to present a paper at IEES is to submit an abstract of up to 300 words. The abstract submission deadline is June 28, and acceptance notification is scheduled on July 26. BOOKINGS NOW OPEN FOR LIFTEX 2025 IN LONDON
Exhibition bookings have opened for LIFTEX 2025 with strong support from Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) members, following the success of the 2022 event. LIFTEX is the tri-annual trade show run by LEIA, returning to London's ExCeL on June 11-12, 2025. Now in its 37th year, LIFTEX is the U.K.'s only dedicated exhibition for the lift, escalator and access industry. The 2022 event saw a 22% increase in attendance, attracting 4,000 attendees — the biggest yet with more than 100 exhibitors from 12 countries, including the U.K., Croatia, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.S. LIFTEX features an exhibition of more than 100 suppliers, alongside a program of free seminars. Hosted by industry experts, sessions will cover topics such as safety, evacuation, modernization and the latest standards and regulations. TITAN MACHINE/MCINTOSH INDUSTRIES TO HOST ANNIVERSARY EVENT

HOUSTON-BASED BOYER NAMED VDA ASSOCIATE
Aaron Boyer, based in Houston, Texas, has been named an associate at elevator and escalator consultancy VDA, Inc. (VDA). Boyer joins VDA after nearly 15 years with Texas-based EMR Elevator, Inc., where he held roles including regional modernization/new installation manager in Houston; and regional project superintendent and construction supervisor, both in Austin. Boyer is skilled in electrical troubleshooting and project coordination. Stating he looks forward to continuing to make contributions and build relationships, Boyer said he is thankful for the nearly 15 years he worked on the contractor side of the elevator industry. "The vast knowledge, along with the remarkable relationships that I have gained through the years, have been nothing short of extraordinary," he said.
OTIS' MARKS AND COLLEAGUES RING NYSE CLOSING BELL AFTER 2024 INVESTOR DAY
Otis Elevator Co. Chair, President and CEO Judy Marks and colleagues rang the Closing Bell® at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in NYC's Financial District on February 15 following Otis' 2024 Investor Day. Observing the occasion was a first since Otis became an independent company, Otis Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Abbe Luersman said the event was "an important milestone for all 71,000 of our colleagues around the world." ORDER, REVENUE GROWTH IN 2023 BUOY SCHINDLER'S 2024 OUTLOOK
A continuing "trajectory of enhanced profitability and sustainable growth" in 2023 despite challenging market conditions, as well as a revamped business strategy focused on customer service, have Swiss OEM Schindler expecting low single-digit revenue growth in 2024, Schindler Chairman and CEO Silvio Napoli said in a February 14 press release. U.K'S INVERTEK PROVIDES SMOOTH AND SAFE TRANSIT IN BRAZIL WITH SPECIALIZED VFD
Invertek Drives Ltd, based in Welshpool, Wales, U.K., provided its Optidrive elevator variable frequency drive (VFD) to a new panoramic lift at the Municipal Astronomical Park in Criciúma, Brazil. Reaching 30 m high at the top of the Morro Cerchinel mountain, the lift opened in November 2023 and is part of a BRL$4.2 million (US$844,764) project funded by the Brazilian government. MARANTEC GROUP AND CEDES ANNOUNCE IOT PARTNERSHIP
The Marantec Group and CEDES have entered into an Internet of Things (IoT) partnership. CEDES, the Swiss specialist in safety systems technology for entrance automation and the elevator industry, and Marantec, a group of companies with eight production plants and eight sales companies worldwide, are presenting the initiative to the public at the R&T trade show in Stuttgart, Germany, on February 19-23. The partnership brings together "three pioneers in their respective disciplines: the Marantec Group as a specialist for drive and control technology, maveo as an IoT specialist in the field of drives for garage and industrial door systems within Marantec Group and CEDES, with its IoT sensor domain expertise from the elevator industry," the partners stated. Traditionally specializing in light barriers and optical sensors in the elevator and industrial-door sectors, CEDES is developing an IoT prototype that combines its sensor technology and data analysis expertise with Marantec's knowhow in drive and control technology, as well as IoT.
CECA PRD REPORTS ON INITIATIVES AND PROGRESS
The Private-Residence Division (PRD) of the Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) recently reported on its various initiatives. PRD members continue to meet regularly to pursue efforts to enhance safety in this ever-growing industry segment. The team has been working with the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario to craft an accredited course to inform brokers of the inherent risks of non-code-compliant residential elevator installations and the CECA standard. Elevator U, a U.S.-based, voluntary association composed primarily of individuals from colleges, universities, government agencies and public institutions who are interested in vertical transportation (VT), plans to launch a monthly newsletter for which it is seeking topics and ideas. NEII ANNOUNCES BLOG'S NEW NAME
In 2023, The National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) launched a blog in which spokesperson and Executive Director Amy J. Blankenbiller shares a behind-the-scenes look at the organization's work. After reviewing the year's blog series, NEII decided the blog needed a "refreshed identity" and rebranded it as POINT/BLANK. "For those who know me, [this name] fits me perfectly. I tell it like it is," Blankenbiller said. Readers are invited to submit questions to be answered in a future blog to email.
 
SCHAEFER AND COLLEAGUES TO PRESENT ELEVATOR FORUM ROADSHOW IN FIVE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

HOUSTON-BASED ERS ANNOUNCES 2024 CONTRACT AWARDS
Houston-based Elevator Repair Service, Inc. (ERS) recently announced 2024 contract awards. They are, in Laredo, Texas, modernization of two hydraulic elevators used by U.S. marshals to transport prisoners at the George P. BATTERSEA POWER STATION'S LIFT 109 IN LONDON TO PRESENT "BOOK TASTING"

ELEVATOR ENTRAPMENT DELAYS COLLEGE BASKETBALL GAME IN BROOKLYN, NY
Players on the Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) Knights men's basketball team became trapped in an elevator at a Brooklyn wellness center on February 15, resulting in delaying a match against the Long Island University Sharks by approximately 17 min, the New York Post is among outlets to report. Fire Department of New York personnel rescued the entrapped players after about 15 min. Read more here

ABC NATIONAL CRAFT CHAMPIONSHIPS TO RETURN TO GREATER ORLANDO
Washington, D.C.-based Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) plans to host its 35th annual National Craft Championships (NCC) on March 14 during the ABC Convention 2024 at the Gaylord Palms Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida. Including carpenters and electricians such as those who build elevator shafts and vertical-transportation electrical systems, the competition will bring together more than 190 of the nation's top craft students and apprentices. OFFICE-TO-RESIDENTIAL CONVERSION TREND SPREADS TO HOUSTON SUBURBS
As it wraps up a US$100-million office-to-residential conversion at the 20-story 1801 Smith Street tower in downtown Houston, Tampa, Florida-based DeBartolo Development is looking beyond the city center for its latest project: converting a 20-story Energy Corridor building into 300 apartments, Realty News Report reports. Described by the source as the first major suburban office to "jump on today's conversion movement," the Westlake 3 tower was developed by Hines in the early 1980s and was originally home to BP and ConocoPhillips. PATENT FILED FOR NEW "ELEVATOR EMERGENCY KIT"
A California woman has created the Elevator Emergency Kit, or E.E.K., a comprehensive emergency kit designed to assist those trapped in an elevator for extended time periods. The kit is stored in a small box mounted to an elevator wall for easy access when needed. Read more here
 
SCHINDLER SPOTLIGHTS ESCALATORS AT MAJOR EASTERN CHINA AIRPORT
On February 19, Schindler spotlighted a transportation system that includes 94 Schindler 9300 escalators serving the new Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport on the coast of eastern China. The OEM provided the escalators to the 470,000-m2-plus airport when it opened in 2021, and today has five full-time maintenance staff on-site to ensure the units are in good working order. Performing equipment checks daily, the Schindler team carries out enhanced maintenance checks — including component inspections, cleaning and lubrication — every 15 days. Twice the size of London's Heathrow Airport, the Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport dramatically boosts the area's air traffic capacity and is projected to serve up to 60 million passengers a year once two additional runways are completed.
