Read more here | | | PLANS FOR GLASGOW HOTEL SUBMITTED | | | Glasgow, Scotland-based Stallan-Brand has put forward a proposal for a 142-bed hotel near Glasgow's River Clyde, Architects' Journal reports. The proposals feature a 13-story building alongside co-working space, two restaurants, two bars, a gym and a roof terrace. Cultural uses are designated for the ground, first and second floors, which will be open to members of the public. Read more here | | | ASSA ABLOY SELLS FRENCH ELEVATOR MAINTENANCE BUSINESS TO KONE | | | Assa Abloy has sold its PACA Ascenseurs elevator maintenance division in France to KONE, Assa Abloy announced on February 2. The Swedish door and lock company that provides automated entrance and security solutions said PACA was part of its acquisition of Agta Record in 2020 and had sales of approximately EUR30 million (US$32.6 million). Read more here | | | ÅMAN APPOINTED MD OF WITTUR NORDICS | | | Elevator component manufacturer The Wittur Group announced that Peter Åman has been appointed managing director (MD) of Wittur Nordics, effective February 1. Wittur Nordics provides sales and after-sales service to Wittur customers in northern Europe from its premises in Spånga, near Stockholm, Sweden. Åman has worked in the elevator industry for the majority of his 15-plus year career, previously serving as MD of Stockholm-based elevator solutions provider Hissgruppen Sverige AB. Read more here | | | SOVIET-ERA ELEVATORS POSE DILEMMA IN LATVIA | Many of the approximately 7,000 elevators in Latvia, including around 5,000 in the capital, Rīga, are from the Soviet era and are probably roughly 50 years old, prompting authorities to search for solutions to the aging-elevator problem, Latvian Radio reports. According to Rīgas Namu Parvaldnieks (RNP), a company consisting of 15 municipal building administrations to help ensure proper upkeep of apartment buildings, only 4% of the 1,200 elevators in RNP-managed buildings are under 35 years old. Read more here | | | OTIS VT MODERNIZATIONS AT EMEA ICONS BURJ KHALIFA AND EIFFEL TOWER | | | Otis is in various stages of modernizing vertical-transportation (VT) equipment at two iconic structures in the Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region: the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Otis President, Chair and CEO Judy Marks said in a January earnings call. At Paris' Eiffel Tower, Otis is wrapping up a multiyear modernization of the tower's dual lifts. Marks observed that Otis elevators have carried visitors to the top of the Eiffel Tower for nearly 130 years. Read more here | | | CTBUH RELEASES 2023 REPORT ON TALL TRENDS | The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has released "Year in Review: Tall Trends of 2023," the latest in its series of annual evaluations of the state of tall building construction across the globe. Eagerly anticipated by architects, engineers, real estate developers and professionals in a wide range of industries related to tall-building construction, the online report revealed higher-than-anticipated growth in the sector: a record-setting 175 buildings 200 m and higher were completed in 2023 — a 7.4% increase over 2018. Read more here | | | KONE RECEIVES "A" SCORE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE PERFORMANCE | | | KONE Corp. has been recognized for leadership in corporate transparency and performance on climate change by the global environmental non-profit CDP, securing a place on its annual "A List." Based on data reported through CDP's 2023 Climate Change questionnaire, KONE is one of a small number of companies to achieve an A out of the more than 21,000 companies scored. Read more here | | | TKE RECEIVES MULTIPLE TOP SUSTAINABILITY RATINGS | TK Elevator (TKE) has been awarded with the top grade "A" in CDP's annual climate ranking for the fourth time in a row. Furthermore, TKE received the EcoVadis Gold Medal for the second time, only awarded to the top 5% of all companies assessed. The company further improved its score, now ranking among the top 2%. In addition, TKE tops the global Sustainalytics ESG ranking in the field of machinery industry. Read more here | | | OTIS NAMED A WORLD'S MOST ADMIRED COMPANY BY FORTUNE | Otis has been recognized as one of the World's Most Admired Companies for 2024 by Fortune magazine, based on survey responses from more than 3,700 business leaders and industry analysts. This is the third year Otis has appeared on the Most Admired list, and the company retained its position on the overall list at number 226 this year. Read more here | | | KONE EXPECTS STABLE OR SLIGHTLY HIGHER SALES THIS YEAR | KONE expects 2024 sales to remain stable or grow slightly in 2024 as weak consumer sentiment continues to hinder sales in China — representing about a third of the company's sales — and strong demand in India and Southeast Asia persists, Reuters is among outlets to report. In an earnings statement, KONE CEO Philippe Delorme said sales grew by 5% at comparable exchange rates as the Finnish elevator and escalator manufacturer "regained momentum in orders received." Abstracts of up to 300 words may be submitted by vertical-transportation professionals, academics and post-graduate students through March 31. Read more here | | | MVRDV WINS CHINA SOFTWARE PARK DESIGN COMPETITION | Rotterdam, Netherland-based architecture and urban design practice MVRDV has won the competition to design two structures within the Tianfu Software Park in Chengdu, China, ArchDaily reports. One of the structures is a 150-m-tall tower that acts as a centerpiece to the entire campus. The other is a four-story Cultural center featuring an art museum, conference hall, library and exhibition space. Read more here | | | SCHINDLER PROVIDING 338 UNITS TO XIAMEN XIANG'AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT | Schindler announced on February 5 it is providing 76 passenger and freight elevators, 100 escalators and 62 moving walks to the new Xiamen Xiang'an International Airport taking shape on Dadeng Island in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian. To become the region's main airport, Xiamen Xiang'an International Airport is projected to serve 62 million passengers and 1 million t of cargo annually by 2030 and 85 million passengers and 2 million t of cargo annually by 2040, according to its operator.
