NAESA TO PROVIDE NY MECHANICS TRAINING
The National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities (NAESA) International has received approval to teach New York mechanics training classes. Registration is open for courses offered April 29, May 1 and May 7. More dates will be announced, and NAESA will work with large groups to schedule classes at their preferred locations. INDIA'S CENTRAL RAILWAY HOSTS "MISSION ZERO DEATH" AWARENESS EVENT
Emphasizing safer alternatives to trespassing on railroad tracks, including taking elevators and escalators, was part of a comprehensive awareness campaign conducted by India's Central Railway on April 4-5 as part of its "Mission Zero Death" initiative, outlets including The Free Press Journal report. The Safety Department of Mumbai division led the effort, conducted at various locations such as the Chunabhatti and Level Crossing at Kurla stations. Foot overbridges, road overbridges, lifts and escalators are how one should navigate the railway system, a message communicated through pamphlets, banners and street theater performances that depicted "the consequences of trespassing through dramatic performances by actors portraying Yamraj (the god of death) and Chitragupta (the divine scribe)."

REPAIR WORK ON THAILAND RAIL SYSTEM VT UNDERWAY
The State Railway of Thailand is working to repair the vertical transportation (VT) along the Red Line commuter rail system after a recent inspection found that 47 of the 228 escalators installed and 22 of the elevators installed were not working, the Bangkok Post reports. Read more here

ELEVATOR PLANNED TO ENHANCE ACCESSIBILITY AT CANADA AQUATICS CENTER
Sandra Masters, mayor of Regina, the capital city of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, said an elevator will be incorporated into the design of a new aquatic center that will enable handicapped visitors to access a tall waterslide, Global News reports. Read more here

NEW HAMPSHIRE FIREFIGHTERS RESCUE FOUR TEENS TRAPPED IN HOTEL ELEVATOR
Manchester, New Hampshire, firefighters rescued four teenagers from London, U.K., who were trapped in a hotel elevator between the first and second floors on April 6, the New Hampshire Union Leader is among outlets to report. After firefighters attempted to recall the elevator to the first floor without success, they disconnected the power source. Read more here

SCHMERSAL GROUP RESTRUCTURES SERVICE DIVISION
K.A. Schmersal GmbH & Co. KG (Schmersal Group), headquartered in Wuppertal, Germany, has restructured its service business, which is expected to result in great development potential in light of growing demand. The range of safety services offered by tec.nicum will be significantly expanded, particularly in digitalization and complete solutions for machine safety. Global activities and expertise will be more closely integrated. tec.nicum, the safety services program supported by TÜV Rheinland-certified engineers, was established on April 8 as a new subsidiary that also incorporates omnicon engineering GmbH, which Schmersal acquired in 2019. The new company is based in Kirkel-Limbach in Saarland, Southwest Germany. Bruno Ricardo Diniz, who previously led tec.nicum's business in Latin America, is heading the newly founded company and is also head of tec.nicum globally. The European business of tec.nicum — Solutions & Services GmbH will be supported by Enildo Caetano dos Santos as business development manager. The German team will be led by Carsten Doll as site manager in Kirkel and Tobias Keller as sales manager.

MANUALLY OPERATED ELEVATOR HAS DENVER TOWER RESIDENTS CONCERNED
Residents of a nine-story Denver, Colorado, apartment tower are concerned that the elevator in their building is being manually operated by a technician standing on top of the unit, 9 News is among outlets to report. A printed sign in the elevator reads, "Please knock and tell them what floor you are at." A Denver Fire Department spokesperson said the process has been approved to keep the elevator operational while repairs are underway. Read more here

KONE TO MODERNIZE 14 NETWORK RAIL ESCALATORS IN LIVERPOOL
Network Rail, the U.K.'s main railway infrastructure owner and manager, has tapped KONE to modernize 14 escalators serving major stations on the Merseyrail network in Liverpool, KONE announced on April 4. Scheduled for completion in late 2026, work comprises full replacement of 40- to 50-year-old units with the energy-efficient KONE EcoMod^TM solution with the ability to transport up to 7,300 passengers per hour. SIX NEW ELEVATORS AT TWO BROOKLYN STATIONS MARK MILESTONE
An array of accessibility upgrades at the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) Metropolitan Avenue and Lorimer Street stations in Brooklyn, NY, including six new elevators — three at each station — mark a milestone: completion of the Construction & Development department's first design-build American with Disabilities Act (ADA) package, MTA announced on April 1. HYUNDAI/KIA DELIVERY ROBOT INTERFACES WITH ELEVATORS AND DOOR-CONTROL SYSTEMS
Hyundai and Kia Robotics Lab have unveiled the DAL-e Delivery robot, geared toward indoor food/beverage and parcel delivery and set to debut in the second quarter of this year at the IGIS Asset Management Factorial Seongsu smart office in Seoul, South Korea, New Atlas reports. Hyundai signed a business agreement with IGIS, the largest real estate investment firm in South Korea, last spring to develop robot-friendly buildings, outlets including The Korea Economic Daily previously reported. KONE TO PROVIDE VT TO TRIPLE-TOWER COMPLEX IN LONDON
KONE has won an order to provide a suite of vertical-transportation (VT) products for 2 Trafalgar Way in Tower Hamlets, part of a mixed-use student accommodation complex on the edge of the Canary Wharf business district in London Docklands. KONE was involved in the design process for 2 Trafalgar Way early on and will install seven JumpLift 200 elevators for enhanced construction efficiency. Read more here

NYC DOB TO REVOKE COMPANY'S COURSE-PROVIDER STATUS AFTER INDICTMENT
NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) Commissioner Jimmy Oddo said the department intends to revoke the DOB-approved course provider status of Brooklyn-based Valor Consulting, a company that previously provided OSHA and Site Safety Training (SST) courses to local construction workers. Read more here

MASSACHUSETTS FD SHARES ELEVATOR-RESCUE TIPS AND INFORMATION
The Cambridge Fire Department in Cambridge, Massachusetts, recently shared information and tips about elevator rescues, observing that the department responds to approximately 200 elevator-rescue calls per year. Illustrated with several photos from a recent elevator rescue, the FD reminds the public to call 911 or use the emergency phone in the elevator if the unit becomes stalled, and the ladder company and rescue company will be dispatched. 280-M SHANGHAI TOWER COMPLETED
Ole Scheeren has completed the first of two towers for the Axiom development in The Springs in the center of the Yangpu district in Shanghai, China, Building Design reports. The two buildings will contain more than 2 million ft² of office, hotel, retail and cultural spaces including a theatre. The design includes a 49-story building rising to 280 m, as well as a 250-m building that is currently being built. The Axiom will have an offset core as opposed to the more standard central core, with the tower's lifts and services protruding out of the building's façade. This feature, seen in just 3% of the world's tallest 500 buildings, aims to maximize internal space and allow large, unobstructed floorplates that can be adapted to the demands of occupiers. The towers will also feature terraces "carved" into the façades halfway up the buildings and a garden on the roof.
