Read more here IES ACQUIRES LOUISIANA-BASED STRATOS ELEVATOR Integrity Elevator Solutions (IES), an elevator maintenance, repair and modernization provider serving Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, has acquired Stratos Elevator, Inc., a leading independent unionized company in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area, Maven Group announced on April 23. IES President Brent Stark described the deal as "the logical next step in our exciting journey of continued growth" as the company expands into the Baton Rouge and New Orleans markets. With more than 40 years in the industry and nearing retirement, Stratos President Richie Doiron is supporting the IES team during the transition. He also thanked Maven Group for putting Stratos in touch with potential partners and helping him "navigate through the entire process from start to finish." | | BART AGREES TO ADDRESS ELEVATOR ISSUES In a settlement agreement approved by a federal judge, San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has agreed to work toward improving train accessibility, according to a news release from groups that pushed for the change, MSN reports. This includes implementing a strategic maintenance plan to renovate its 87 station elevators, promptly repair out-of-service station elevators and escalators and implement a preventive plan to ensure routine access. Read more here | | SCHINDLER ACHIEVES TWO COMPANYWIDE ISO CERTIFICATIONS Schindler Elevator Corp., with U.S. headquarters in Morristown, New Jersey, and Canadian headquarters in Toronto, announced in April it has become the first North American elevator company to achieve two companywide, global International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certifications: ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management systems. Unlike previous certifications that have been limited to a singular business operation, these are the first to be implemented across the entire value chain. Schindler observes it has been a consistent sustainability leader in the elevator industry, earning North America's first LEED Gold green-building certification for its manufacturing facility in Hanover, Pennsylvania, in 2014. Most recently, Schindler established an internal cross-functional sustainability committee as part of its commitment to achieving net zero by 2040. This year, Schindler, founded in Switzerland in 1874, is pursuing ISO 45001 certification, which is the global standard for managing occupational health and safety risk. Over the past five years, tours have been canceled on several occasions due to the elevator system, which has parts dating back to the 1930s, and many repairs have taken place over the years. Read more here SBTi APPROVES OTIS' GHG EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGETS Otis has announced that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved its near-term science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets. Otis' SBTi-approved targets are as follows: reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 55% by 2033 from a 2021 base year and reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, business travel and use of sold products 33% within the same timeframe. These targets demonstrate the company's commitment to meeting the objective of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. SBTi is a partnership between Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption and independently assesses and approves companies' targets. | | A LOOK AT SCHINDLER'S 2024 SALES TARGETS Schindler reiterated its full-year revenue guidance for low single-digit percentage growth, cutting expectations for new installations in China, Reuters reports. Chinese installations outpaced the rest of the Asia-Pacific in units and value in the first quarter, but weakness in the country's construction activity would likely weigh on future orders, according to Schindler, which expects new installations in China to decline by more than 10% this year, compared to the 5% to 10% forecasted drop. Read more here LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT ADDRESSES FINDINGS IN ELEVATOR INCIDENT The Lagos State Government has made public the panel's findings on what caused the death of a physician in an elevator incident at a hospital in Odan, Lagos Island, Nigeria, in August 2023, Gistlover.com reports. In a press release, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Strategy Olumide Sogunle stated that the Lagos State Government had already taken some initial actions in response to the panel's recommendations. Read more here CONNECTICUT STATE CAPITOL BUILDING FACING VT ISSUES The Connecticut State Capitol has experienced breakdowns in its elevators and escalators during the final few weeks of the legislative session, and the estimated price tag to replace the vertical transportation (VT) might exceed US$10 million, the New Haven Register reports. Additionally, the escalators to the first floor are too narrow to meet Americans with Disability Act requirements. "As with any almost-40-year-old building, our elevators, escalators and travelator are all approaching their end of life," James Tamburro, executive director of the Office of Legislative Management, said, adding that they have tried to stay on top of the repairs and are working with a consultant to determine the cost to fix them. Advertisement | | | ONTARIO TO BRING MASS-TIMBER CONSTRUCTION UP TO 18 STORIES In a move aimed at building homes faster and reducing costs over time, the Canadian province of Ontario plans to increase the allowed height of mass-timber buildings from 12 to 18 stories, the province reports. Amending the building code to permit taller mass-timber structures also promises to support well-paying jobs in technology, engineering design, manufacturing and forestry, a sector that generates nearly CAD21 billion (US$15.2 billion) in annual revenue and supports more than 142 jobs in the province.
