The total time that underground lifts were closed due to a lack of staffing in 2024 reached 6,197 h (equivalent to 258 days). The figure has increased by 87% since 2023. Dalvano served as a helper, then a mechanic, at a number of NYC-area elevator companies before launching his own maintenance and construction business in 1974. He worked hard to grow Barist, eventually selling it to KONE in 2015 before retiring and then settling permanently in Naples, Florida, with his beloved wife, Betty. Dalvano was a former president and Board of Directors (BoD) member at the Elevator Conference of New York (ECNY), as well as a former National Association of Elevator Contractors BoD member and director. "Richard recruited me to the ECNY BoD and eventually, guided my ascension to president of ECNY, taking the reins from him," colleague and ELEVATOR WORLD Correspondent Matthew Jackson said. "I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the many times I sought his counsel, knowing I would always get the unvarnished truth, good or bad. Those were fun days! Rest in peace, dear friend." Read more here OTIS SECURES 29-UNIT MODERNIZATION CONTRACT IN SWEDEN Otis has secured a contract to modernize 29 escalators for A-Train AB, the operator of the Arlanda Express, which connects the Stockholm, Sweden, city center to Arlanda Airport. The project, starting in September 2025, will upgrade the 30-year-old escalators, which were originally installed by Otis in the 1990s. The modernization will include replacing motors, the steps and the interconnected chains that move the steps and electrical wiring, alongside improvements to meet the latest safety standards. Otis' proposal for extensive modernization – rather than complete replacement – was chosen as the "best and most sustainable option and will minimize disruption for around five million passengers who use the Arlanda Line annually," according to the press release. | | SCHMERSAL GROUP ESTABLISHES SOUTH KOREA SUBSIDIARY The Schmersal Group has founded a new subsidiary in the Noon Square building in Seoul: Schmersal Korea Ltd. Read more here | | TKE UNVEILS GLASS ELEVATOR AT NATIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR MUSEUM IN TEXAS The Medal of Honor is the U.S. Armed Forces' highest military decoration, and the memory of the more than 3,500 heroes who received it will be forever remembered with the National Medal of Honor Museum that opened in Arlington, Texas, on March 25. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, the 130,000-ft2 facility is set into a five-acre tranquil landscape. The complex's primary building is served by a custom glass elevator designed and built by TK Elevator (TKE) for general contractor Linbeck Group. TKE was supported by Eklund's, Inc., which built the custom glass cabs. In a video produced by TKE, elevator adjuster Mike Holcomb said the elevator is unique in his 26-year career, from its in-ground jack to its cantilevered construction with rails on one side. TKE Americas CEO Jeremy Rainwater said the company is proud and humbled to have been part of the project NIGERIA STATE TO NO LONGER ALLOW THREE-STORY BUILDINGS WITHOUT ELEVATORS The Abia State government in Nigeria has warned developers that they will no longer get approval for three-story buildings that do not have an elevator, the Nigerian Tribune reports. Government officials said this is for safety and to keep the buildings "habitable for users and owners." CHEAP PARTS, LACK OF MAINTENANCE LEAD TO INDIA LIFT ACCIDENTS Small builders and manufacturers installing cheap, low-grade lifts and parts, along with a lack of maintenance and critical safety equipment, are leading to often fatal lift accidents in Hyderabad, India, Telangana Today reports. The source highlighted five recent lift accidents. In August 2024, a 65-year-old man fell to his death in an elevator shaft in Gudimalkapur, and six people were injured in November 2024 when a lift plummeted from the sixth floor of an apartment building in Chandulal Baradari. Read more here | | ELEVATOR INCIDENT IN MUNICH LEAVES WOMAN INJURED An incident recently occurred in Munich, Germany, where an 82-year-old woman sustained serious injuries after becoming trapped in an elevator, The Munich Eye reports. Reports indicate that the woman fell while attempting to enter the lift, and the elevator ascended before she could regain her footing, causing her legs to be stuck between the cabin and the shaft. Read more here FIREFIGHTERS BREAK THROUGH WALL, METAL WELL IN INDIA RESCUE Firefighters in Ahmedabad, India, searched for, identified and broke through a wall and cut through a metal sheet on Floor 3¾ of a building to rescue 10 women stuck in an elevator inside a completely hidden lift well, enclosed on all four sides, The Indian Express reports. Officials said that a jammed clutch of the elevator led to the lift car getting stuck on the third floor of the mixed-use building. The residential part begins on the fourth floor, so the lift is designed to go directly to the fourth floor without stopping.
