The elevator, installed in 1983, has been prone to frequent breakdowns and service calls. The renovation will cost approximately US$120,000 and will include replacements for the hoist, motor and electrical system while also addressing code compliance. According to officials, the installation will be completed by September. CMRL authorities have acquired 40 elevators manufactured in Chennai and 60 escalators imported from China. Read more here HIGH-RISE SOCIETY LIFTS NOT REGISTERED, DEADLINE LOOMING As of early March, the Electrical Safety Department of Ghaziabad, India, had issued notices to at least 50 high-rise societies in the trans-Hindon area, Crossings Republik and Raj Nagar Extension to get their lifts registered under the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Lift Act, The Times of India reports. The deadline to register is March 25, but only a few lifts at malls and industrial sites in Ghaziabad have registered their lifts, according to officials. There are more than 200 high-rise societies in the area, and none have registered lifts, according to officials. The UP Lift Act was passed by the state legislature in February 2024 to regulate the installation, maintenance and safe operation of lifts and escalators across the state, especially Noida. On October 29, the Noida administration made it mandatory for building owners and Resident Welfare Associations to register all lifts on society premises within six months of September 25. | | ADDITIONAL VT UNITS AMONG INDIA'S DMRC CROWD-CONTROL MEASURES Installing additional elevators, escalators and moving walks at busy rail stations is among measures being undertaken by India's Delhi Metro Rail Corp. (DMRC) to handle surging crowds, The Economic Times reports. Advertisement | | | MINISTRY OF HEALTH REPLACING SIX ELEVATORS IN HOSPITAL IN FIJI The Ministry of Health and Medical Services in Fiji has begun the FJD1 million (US$427,541) process of replacing six elevators at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, fijivillage News reports. Minister of Health Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu has confirmed that four new elevators have already arrived at the hospital where installation will begin soon. Read more here ELEVEN PEOPLE STUCK IN CAMBRIDGE HIGH-RISE ELEVATOR RESCUED At approximately 6 p.m. on March 7, the Cambridge Fire Department of Massachusetts responded to and rescued 11 people stuck in a high-rise elevator, Mass Live reports. The elevator shaft was a blind shaft, meaning the elevator was stuck in a position away from operating floors. The fire department used a rope system to extract those stuck in the elevator. One person needed evaluation after being rescued, but no other injuries were reported.
