SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 28th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology, as well as overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2026 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The submission deadline is September 2.

CECA CONVENTION IS SEEKING A SPEAKER FOR CONTRACTOR BREAKFAST
The Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) and Alcor Elevator announced that they are looking for a speaker for the June CECA Convention's Contractor Breakfast. The breakfast will be held on June 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. during the CECA Convention in Niagara Falls on June 8-12. In the announcement, CECA said, "This breakfast is always well attended, and you will have a captive audience to educate about your product!" Read more here

NIDEC DRIVES APPOINTS BABAUD AS PRESIDENT
Nidec Drives, with global headquarters (HQ) in Kyoto, Japan, and Americas HQ in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, recently announced it appointed Laurent Babaud as president. Based in Bois-Colombes, France, Babaud has more than three decades' experience in motors and drives at Nidec. He has led the European sales network for Leroy-Somer and Control Techniques, served as president of SSB Wind Systems and, most recently, led Nidec Conversion's global sales, marketing and Europe operations. Nidec Motion Platform President Anthony Pickering said he is "convinced Babaud has the passion, enthusiasm and tenacity required to lead the Nidec Drives business forward, driving new phases of growth and long-term development." Babaud said he is proud to lead the "incredible team" at Nidec Drives in driving growth and innovation.
 
ECNY TO HOST AUDIO-VISUAL COMMUNICATION SEMINAR
The Elevator Conference of New York (ECNY) will be hosting a seminar focused on current audio-visual communication code requirements on May 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Villa Barone Manger in the Bronx, NY. The event will give participants an opportunity to hear from industry experts as they dive into the latest code updates and explore various product solutions. The cost is US$125 per person and includes dinner. The event is open to ECNY members only, and members are encouraged to register early as spots are limited.

DRAKA EHC ANNOUNCES REGISTRATION FOR GOLF CLASSIC
Draka EHC, the rebranded company name of two leaders in the vertical-transportation (VT) industry, Draka elevator and EHC Global, has announced registration for the 40th Annual Draka EHC Golf Classic. The golf event will be held at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on May 15. A meet-and-greet event will take place on the night of May 14. The Golf Classic begins at 8 a.m. with a Supplier Breakfast and will last until the President's Social Dinner at 6:15 p.m. Registration closes on May 1.

On April 29, Schindler announced the launch of the new Schindler 5000, a machine-room-less (MRL) elevator designed for low- to mid-rise offices, hotels, hospitals, apartment complexes and more. INDIA'S CCI GREENLIGHTS ATC'S STAKE IN TKE AND SAUDI JV
The Competition Commission of India (CCI), India's antitrust watchdog, has approved Alat Technology Co. (ATC) acquiring a minority stake in TK Elevator (TKE) and a forming a joint venture (JV) with TKE to manufacture, supply, install and maintain vertical- and horizontal-transportation systems, outlets including Devdiscourse report. CCI's approval underscores the transparency and competitiveness of the deal, and indicates the proposed JV does not negatively impact market competition. Read more here
 
IUEC RECOGNIZES SAFETY STAND DOWN DAY ON APRIL 28
On April 28, Safety Stand Down Day, members of the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) took a moment to reflect on the 416 workers who lost their lives on the job and vowed to embrace safety in the workplace. The annual, voluntary event coincides with Workers Memorial Day in the U.S., the National Day of Mourning in Canada, the International Commemoration Day for the Dead and Injured and the World Day for Safety and Health. IUEC General President Frank Christensen shared a video message on the Safety Stand Down website, where additional information, such as the Toll of Neglect and the campaign to save the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, can be found.
FOCUS MEDIA TO BUY ELEVATOR ADVERTISING SPECIALIST XIANCHAO
Shares of Focus Media Information Technology leaped after China's largest outdoor advertising firm revealed plans to acquire elevator ad peer Xinchao Media Group for CNY8.3 billion (US$1.1 billion), marking a strategic expansion into residential advertising, Yicai Global reports. Read more here
 
STANNAH COMPLETES EDEN COURT RESIDENTIAL PROJECT
Stannah Lifts recently completed the work of transforming eight-person passenger lifts for the residents of 84-apartment Eden Court in Lillington, Leamington Spa, in Warwickshire, U.K., Local Authority Building & Maintenance reports. The lift refurbishment at Eden Court is part of a wider modernization program with Warwick District Council (WDC), involving the refurbishment of approximately 20 lifts in residential buildings to improve safety and efficiency. Bensenville, Illinois-headquartered Colley Elevator Co. announced approval of its Elevator 101 course for continuing-education (CE) credit by the State of Illinois for property managers working toward their Community Association Manager (CAM) license on April 24. Approved as an elective for 0.1 CEU, the course aims to provide community association and property managers with a better understanding of their elevator equipment. Read more here

OZARKS FIREFIGHTERS RECEIVE ELEVATOR RESCUE TRAINING
Firefighters from several agencies in the Ozarks, including the Logan-Rogersville Fire Protection District in Rogersville, Missouri, spent the week at district headquarters learning how to rescue entrapped people from elevators, KY3 reported on April 27. The training included a classroom portion during which firefighters learned the basic anatomy of an elevator, different types of elevators and their components. Read more here

13TH ANNUAL U.K. TOMORROW'S ENGINEERS WEEK ANNOUNCED
EngineeringUK has announced dates for its national campaign, Tomorrow's Engineers Week, which celebrates and showcases careers in engineering and technology. The campaign, in its 13th year, will take place between November 10 and 14. A record 55,544 young people engaged with Tomorrow's Engineers Week content for schools last year. Read more here
ELEVATOR SHAFT WORK CONFIRMED IN WAKE OF DEADLY BANGKOK TOWER COLLAPSE
Thailand's State Audit Office (SAO) clarified in a statement that elevator shaft wall modification work at its 30-story, under-construction tower in Bangkok was in full compliance with regulations in the wake of a deadly building collapse on March 28, The Nation reports. The collapse was the result of an 8.2-magnitude earthquake near Mandalay, Myanmar, that trapped nearly 100 workers inside and resulted in at least 60 deaths. Read more here

A wide range of local organizations in Kent, U.K., came together recently to explore practical ways to collaborate in addressing current and future job vacancies while also tackling local skills shortages. ELEVATOR COMPLETED AT CHILD CARE CENTER IN NY
Local officials, representatives of organizations and nonprofits and members of the Utica, NY community gathered on April 7 to celebrate the completion of the elevator at the DeSales Center, the Daily Sentinel reported. The ribbon-cutting ceremony welcomed a new level of accessibility to the center, built in 1931 and offering two childcare programs, Academics First and the Thea Bowman House. Before the new elevator project was completed, the facility had only a chairlift that provided access to a limited part of the first floor.

PLANS REVEALED FOR WEST END TOWER UPDATE
KPF has unveiled plans for 33 Cavendish Square, a 21-story office and retail tower next to Oxford Circus and one of the tallest buildings in London's West End in the U.K., Building Design reports. The 1960s building, originally occupied by British Home Stores, also includes a two-story podium and a six-story block along Oxford Street previously home to the London College of Fashion before its move to new purpose-built premises at the Olympic Park.
