ELEVATOR WORLD's August 2025 issue will focus on Maintenance with a Special Regional Section on the Northwest. The issue will feature the 13th annual Photo Contest Winners and Continuing Education with special distribution at NAEC. SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 28th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology, as well as overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2026 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The submission deadline is September 2.

ATIS TAPS EXECUTIVES TO ACCELERATE GROWTH

SKILLSUSA NLSC INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO ELEVATOR INDUSTRY CAREERS
The SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) will be held on June 23-27 in Atlanta, Georgia, and is expected to host more than 6,500 student competitors. For the third year, the elevator industry – comprised of a partnership among National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII), National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) and the Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund (EIWPF) - will host a booth at SkillsUSA NLSC. The industry representatives will share the wide range of career opportunities within the vertical-transportation industry to thousands of students who are already primed to succeed within building trades. This year's elevator industry booth will feature four Try-A-Skill activities, where students will get digital hands-on experience through a virtual reality escape room experience. Mechanics from NEII member companies will also be available each day to talk with students.
 
OTIS UK SELLS LIFTEC EXPRESS TO RCAPITAL PARTNERS
Otis UK announced on June 2 the sale of its 100% shareholding in Liftec Express Ltd. to Rcapital Partners LLP. DC Advisory advised Otis on the transaction, the terms of which were not disclosed. Liftec Express is a U.K. entity that resulted from the acquisition by Otis of five independent lift service providers over the past 25 years. Read more here

TK ELEVATOR PRESENTS ADVANCED SOLUTIONS AT UITP SUMMIT 2025
The Union Internationale des Transports Publics — International Association of Public Transport — (UITP) is holding its 2025 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, on June 15-18, with companies like TK Elevator (TKE) participating in the conversation on sustainable urban mobility. TKE is presenting solutions for enhanced safety, efficiency and sustainability under the theme "Connected Urban Mobility for Sustainable, People-Centric Cities." The company's exhibition features a broad portfolio of high-performance escalators, modular moving walks and intelligent maintenance, as well as digital solutions for passenger flow optimization, downtime reduction and sustainable operations support. TKE will also host an exclusive tour of its Escalator Manufacturing Center in Hamburg on June 17 for customers and press representatives.
 
MAYER JOINS SCHINDLER AS CAROLINA AREA GM
Michael Mayer recently joined Schindler as general manager (GM) for Charlotte and western North Carolina, and South Carolina.  Mayer joins Schindler from a nearly eight-year career with Sealed Air Corp. in Charlotte, where he held various IT leadership roles. In announcing his new position, Mayer thanked the leaders at Sealed Air for his experience in IT, and said his new role with Schindler feels like "coming home." Read more here

MESA MEETING INCLUDES HYPERION PRESENTATION AND SCHOLARSHIPS
The Massachusetts Elevator Safety Association (MESA) meeting held at Jake N Joes in Norwood, Massachusetts, on June 11 included a spirited presentation on dual-plunger brake systems by Pete McIntosh of Hyperion Solutions and scholarships for three outstanding students. OTIS BRAZIL TO MODERNIZE ELEVATORS AT CHRIST THE REDEEMER MONUMENT
Twenty-two years after installation, three Otis Gen2® elevators at the iconic Christ the Redeemer monument in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will be modernized by Otis Brazil, Otis announced on June 11. The units will undergo a technological revitalization that includes replacing machines and controllers and installing new signage, fixtures and buttons. BC DISTRICT PUSHING FOR EUROPEAN-STYLE ELEVATORS
The District of Saanich in Vancouver Island, British Columbia (BC), Canada, recently voted unanimously to send a resolution to the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM), calling on the province to "legalize" smaller and less expensive European-style elevators in low- and mid-rise buildings in which an elevator would otherwise not be installed, Yahoo! News reports. A 2024 report from the Center for Building in North America found elevator prices in Canada and the U.S. are three times higher than in comparable buildings in Europe. Read more here
 
LIFTCOMM ENHANCES NYC MTA STATION ELEVATOR SAFETY, SECURITY
LiftComm, a provider of communication solutions for the transportation industry, recently completed jobs in Midtown Manhattan and the Bronx, NY. As part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) modernization of two elevators at the 34th Street Penn Station subway station in Midtown Manhattan, LiftComm provided an advanced elevator intercom system that supports MTA's accessibility and safety goals at one of the busiest transit hubs in the country. LAST WOODEN ESCALATOR IN LONDON UNDERGROUND TO BE REPLACED BY ELEVATOR
Alperton Tube station in London, England, which has the last wooden escalator on the London Underground, is set to receive two new elevators, making the station fully step-free and accessible for the first time, Ian Visits reports. The wooden escalator was taken from the Dome of Discovery at the Festival of Britain and reinstalled at the Alperton Tube station in November 1955. Read more here
 
CONSTRUCTION OF TALLEST BUILDING IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA RESTARTED
Ethiopia restarted construction plans for what will become the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa, the US$445-million, 62-story skyscraper for Ethiopian Electric Power, Shore Africa reports. The skyscraper, which is set to be constructed as a landmark of Addis Ababa's financial district, will surpass the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Headquarters that currently holds the record. SCHINDLER MODERNIZES ELEVATORS AT ART DECO TOWER IN NYC
Schindler recently modernized the 18-elevator system serving 500 Fifth Avenue, a 60-story Art Deco office skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, NY. In contrast to the building's historic marble and bronze lobby, the elevators now represent cutting-edge technology, Schindler observed. The Schindler PORT transit-management system was incorporated as part of a comprehensive modernization of all passenger and freight elevators. Read more here
 
OTIS TO PROVIDE ELEVATORS AND ESCALATORS FOR MALAYSIAN RESIDENTIAL TOWER
On June 16, Otis announced it will install cutting edge vertical-transportation (VT) technologies for the Westin Residence and Hotel in Penang, Malaysia. The project is set to be the tallest residential tower in Penang, rising 69 stories above the sea-facing promenade of Gurney Drive. Otis will work with the developer Macrovest Sdn. Bhd. (VST Group) to provide 19 high-speed SkyRise® elevators, four Gen3™ elevators, a car elevator and 10 Link™ escalators for the building. Read more here

GLOBAL SPACE ELEVATOR CHALLENGE TO KICK OFF AT JUNE EVENT
The World Space Elevator Competition (WSPEC), a new non-profit initiative designed to promote the next generation of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) fields worldwide has announced the first-ever global space elevator competition. Designed for university level students and space enthusiasts, WSPEC will feature multiple strategic competitions, starting with robotic climber and power-beaming challenges, designed to advance critical technologies needed to construct an elevator to space — the first ever to take place on a global level. The competition will kick off at the International Space Development Conference on June 19-22 in Orlando, Florida, and will feature live demonstrations of winning robotic climbers from past regional competitions, including the world's fastest robotic climber. WSPEC both continues and expands upon the current regional space elevator games, opening them to countries throughout the world and combining them into a single global collaboration under one international umbrella. These initiatives will initially prioritize advancements with practical applications that are also critical to build the first elevator to space. Competitions will be held annually with prizes awarded to the top-performing teams. WSPEC is a partnership of Etheria Space, the Japan Space Elevator Association and WARR Space Elevator Challenge of Germany and The International Space Elevator Consortium.

OTIS RECEIVES SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS
Otis has recently been recognized by three publications for its sustainable practices. Otis returned to the USA Today America's Climate Leaders list that ranks 500 recognized companies based on their core emissions compared to their revenues, taking data from 2021-2023. The Forbes Net-Zero Leaders list recognizes 200 companies in the U.S. for their efforts in reducing carbon emissions. Read more here

ENGINEERINGUK CEO REACTS TO U.K. 2025 SPENDING REVIEW
CEO of EngineeringUK Dr. Hilary Leevers welcomed the U.K. government's commitment to invest GBP113 billion (US$153 billion) in capital projects across energy, infrastructure, transport and housing, noting that the increased budget will "create tens of thousands more jobs in engineering and technology across the U.K., over the current Parliament and beyond." CIC PARTICIPATES IN BID FOR PHILIPPINE AIRPORT AC PROJECT
Consumer lifestyle and enterprise solutions provider Concepcion Industrial Corp. (CIC) is participating in bids for large air-conditioning projects at several airports across the Philippines, BusinessWorld reports. DEYAAR UNVEILS DUBAI DOWNTOWN RESIDENCES PROJECT
Dubai, U.A.E.'s Deyaar Development unveiled the plans for its Downtown Residences project, slated to be one of the tallest residential projects in the U.A.E., on June 10, The National News reports. As the U.A.E.'s property market continues to gain demand from buyers, Deyaar announced its plans to build the project, with a height of 445 m and more than 110 floors, near Sheikh Zayed Road, Downtown Dubai and Business Bay. OTIS PUTS BLOOMFIELD FACILITY UP FOR SALE
Otis Worldwide has put its facility in Bloomfield, Connecticut, up for sale, but the company appears likely to keep occupying the site for the foreseeable future, CT Insider reports. The property comprises an approximate 188,000-ft2 building at 212 W. Newberry Road, housing a customer-service center that supports Otis' operations in the U.S. and Canada and some "light manufacturing," the company said. "We are looking at ways to optimize our real estate footprint in the state to meet our business needs for today and the future," Otis officials said. "This includes our intent to sell and lease back our Otis service center in Bloomfield to ensure business continuity." In addition to the service center in Bloomfield, Otis' locations in Connecticut include its headquarters and a neighboring engineering center in Farmington, a test tower in Bristol and service branches in East Hartford and Shelton. Approximately 1,000 Otis employees are based in Connecticut, but the company did not disclose the number of people who work at the Bloomfield service center.
