SUBMISSION DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 29th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology, as well as overall quality of presentation. This year’s categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2027 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The submission deadline is September 2. |

ESI ACQUIRES CHICAGO-BASED EAST ELEVATOR

QEI TRAINING COURSE AND CERTIFICATION EXAMS COMING UP
NAESA International is offering the four-day QEI Training Course with the QEI Certification Exam on the fifth day for individuals who meet the requirements to become QEI Certified. St. Louis-headquartered ATIS, one of North America's largest vertical-transportation consulting, inspection and managed services providers and a portfolio company of Thompson Street Capital Partners (TSCP) has acquired AuditMate, a leading elevator asset management technology platform headquartered in San Francisco. TSCP announced on August 24. The acquisition positions ATIS as the "technology-enabled leader in elevator asset management by combining AuditMate's best-in-class software platform with ATIS' leading North American offering," TSCP observed. SAN FRANCISCO’S IUEC LOCAL 8 TO HOST CHARITY GOLF EVENT
International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) Local 8 in San Francisco plans to host a charity golf tournament on October 3 benefitting the Sheepdog Coalition, a nonprofit that helps combat veterans heal and reintegrate back into civilian life. The event will be held at Yocha Dehe Golf Club in Brooks, California, with registration at 8 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. The cost for a member is US$250, and for a nonmember, US$300. TEA TO HOST ANNUAL GOLF OUTING IN OCTOBER
The Texas Elevator Association (TEA) plans to host its Annual Golf Outing on October 14 at the Falconhead Golf Club in Austin, Texas. The event will include a morning TEA meeting with industry presentations, lunch from 11 a.m. to noon, golf from noon until 5 p.m. and awards and hors d’oeuvres from 5 to 6 p.m. There is an association hotel block approximately 2 mi from the golf course at Springhill Suites Lakeway in Lakeway, Texas, for October 13-15, with rates ranging from US$104-US$107 per night. Golf registrations are limited. ANICA MARKS 45 YEARS WITH TECHNICAL CONFERENCE
The Italian National Association of Lift Component Manufacturers (ANICA) celebrated its first 45 years of activity with an event held in Besate in the province of Milan on May 5, Elevatori Magazine reports. To mark the occasion, more than 130 participants gathered for the association’s technical conference. The day was dedicated to celebrations, but also to technical matters (with a conference in the morning) and the proceedings of the members’ meeting, which took place in the afternoon. HYUNDAI ELEVATOR OBTAINS GREEN TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATIONS FOR INVERTER
Hyundai Elevator said on August 19 it obtained green technology certification and green technology product verification for the WB250, a regenerative power conversion device (inverter) applied to high-speed elevators, ChosunBiz reports. The green technology certification obtained by the WB250 certifies a product's eco-friendly technology, and the green technology product verification confirms that the certified technology has been applied to an actual product. OTIS ELEVATORS PART OF US$72-MILLION MTA BROOKLYN STATION PROJECT
Three new Otis elevators from street to platform are part of a US$72-million NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) accessibility project at the Kings Highway subway station in southern Brooklyn, NY. Announced on August 19, the project brings MTA to 46 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant subway stations — closer to its goal of adding 50 ADA-compliant stations since 2020. TERRY LIFTS TO HOST CHARITY FISHING MATCH IN OCTOBER
The U.K.’s Terry Lifts will again host its Charity Fishing Match on October 3, bringing together colleagues, customers and friends from across the lift industry to support the Lift Industry Mental Health Charter. The 24-h fishing event will be held at the Naseby Reservoir in Northamptonshire, U.K., with prizes to be won and food and refreshments included. The event is open to seasoned anglers and/or those looking to support a good cause. KOREA’S LH NOW REQUIRING AIR CONDITIONING IN ELEVATORS AMONG OTHER IMPROVEMENTS
The Korea Land & Housing Corp. (LH) will require air conditioning in all newly ordered elevators, part of a broader effort to improve the safety and convenience of elevators in public housing, Seoul Economic Daily is among outlets to report. LH is rolling out a comprehensive set of elevator improvements. LH has already begun requiring air conditioning when replacing elevators in aging rental housing. The corporation is also introducing flood-detection and managed-operation features: When flooding occurs in an elevator shaft, the system will detect it and move the elevator to a safe floor while restricting its operation. 288-M ELEVATOR ADDS EASE FOR TOURISTS/SCHOOLCHILDREN IN CHINA PROVINCE
A 288-m elevator has begun operating in the remote village of Nichjuhe in China’s Yunnan Province, Zamin is among outlets to report. The new “Fuyao Ladder” elevator was built next to the 268-meter “Qingyun Ladder” built in 2022. The new elevator features transparent glass walls offering a 360° view. It operates at a speed of 5 m/s. The two elevators have a combined capacity of 1,200 passengers per hour. The project has increased the number of tourists visiting the area. The site’s daily visitor capacity has risen from 4,000 to 15,000 people. The elevator has also eased school commutes for children living at the foot of the mountain. Read more here
REMOTE MONITORING HELPS SOUND TRANSIT IMPROVE VT RELIABILITY
Sound Transit, the public-transit agency in Washington’s Puget Sound region, improved vertical-transportation (VT) equipment reliability using remote monitoring, predictive analytics and risk assessment, Mass Transit reports. In a pilot program, the agency implemented remote monitoring across 20 elevators and escalators, resulting in a 90% reduction in unreported outages. SOUTH KOREA REVISITS “STAND IN ONE LINE OR TWO” ESCALATOR QUESTION
South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to host a debate bringing together members of the public and experts to look at whether escalator passengers should stand on both sides or if one side should be left open for people in a hurry, Seoul Economic Daily reports. The debate, planned at Yonsei University in Seoul on August 29, represents the first time in 11 years escalator use has been debated since the government halted its two-line campaign. Current results of an advance poll running through August 27 show 169 voted to stand in two lines, with 149 saying to keep one line open. Read more here
STANLEY ELEVATOR ISSUES REMINDER ABOUT NEW NH DOL ELEVATOR INSPECTION RULE
Stanley Elevator Co., Inc., headquartered in Merrimack, New Hampshire, and serving the New England area for 75 years this year, issued a reminder about new state elevator inspection guidelines — effective since April 2025 — that require an inspection report from the New Hampshire Department of Labor (NH DOL) before any out-of-service elevator can be returned to operation, whether due to code violations, renovations or modernization. Prior to April 2025, company-employed elevator state inspectors were permitted to inspect and submit reports on elevator alterations. Under the new rule, the NH DOL no longer accepts such reports. Instead, all alterations must be inspected by an official inspector from the DOL through what’s known as an “acceptance inspection.” The bottom line for building owners and managers is that the NH DOL must conduct the inspection. and the elevator cannot be returned to service until the DOL inspection is completed and approved. |

HYUNDAI ELEVATOR SIGNS MOU FOR TO HELP ADDRESS STACK EFFECT IN HIGH-RISE ELEVATORS
Hyundai Elevator and GS Engineering & Construction have signed a “Joint Technology Development Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Securing Airtightness Performance of Ultra-High-Rise Elevators,” The Asia Business Daily is among outlets to report. The two companies will focus on developing technologies to address the stack effect — a phenomenon where differences in air density and pressure caused by the temperature difference between the inside and outside of a tall building cause indoor air to move like a chimney along vertical passages such as stairwells or elevator shafts — which can commonly occur in ultra-high-rise buildings. In winter, cold air enters at the lower floors while warm air escapes from the top, leading to issues with entrance and elevator doors, loss of heating and cooling, noise and increased risk of smoke spreading in the event of a fire.
