Joe Seidl, who spent more than 30 years in the elevator industry and was an employee of Salisbury, Maryland-based Delaware Elevator, Inc., passed away in December 2023 at age 73. Seidl was a proud and highly decorated military veteran, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal for his service in the Vietnam War. Many would say that Seidl was a brilliant man who understood people on a level that few can. He often threatened to retire, but was quick to extend those terms year after year. CHICILON MEDIA'S ELEVATOR SCREENS MEET IOT SAFETY STANDARDS
Vietnam's Chicilon Media has announced that its 27-in. TV-screen elevator media devices in office buildings and apartments meet all Internet of Things (IoT) device safety standards without any security risks, VN Express reports. The elevator media devices are tested based on the IoT-security-assessment method developed by the Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP), and the results were verified by Viettel Cyber Security. The assessment includes the security level of the devices' connectivity, the connection of the devices to websites or other administrative interfaces, any linked applications and information vulnerability. Chicilon Media's elevator screens passed for all four standards: not having applications that transmit data to third parties, not taking or storing images of viewers, no information gaps and meeting all information security requirements. Chicilon Media currently has more than 36,000 advertising screens with advanced technology, occupying 92% of the elevator media market share in apartment buildings and offices in key cities. ESCALATOR STOPS PLAGUE WESTERN RAILWAY STATIONS IN INDIA
Each escalator at stations on the Western Railway (WR) in India stops working an average of five times a day, according to officials, the Hindustan Times reports. Data from 2023 shows that the 106 escalators on stations between Churchgate and Virar were stopped more than 193,000 times during the course of the year. WR officials say the majority of the stops are from people pushing the "Stop" buttons for fun. Another reason that has come to light is that porters sometimes press the red "Stop" buttons to stop the escalators to increase the chances of getting hired by commuters carrying luggage. When the escalators are stopped, it takes 30-45 min on average to get them working again. The Central Railway, which has 101 escalators on the CSMT-Kalyan/Panvel route, does not maintain any record of escalator breakdowns.

MOMBASA ELEVATOR CONSTRUCTION FATALITY
A man fell to his death while installing a new elevator in an under-construction building in Mombasa, Kenya, Construction Kenya reports. The middle-aged man was working on an 18-story building opposite Sauti House. He died at the scene while his colleague was able to jump from the lift and escaped. The incident was under investigation at the time of the report. While it is still unclear how and why the accident occurred, human rights officials believe the accident could have been prevented, indicating that negligence played a significant role in the victim's death, the source reports. This fatality marked the third occurring in skyscraper construction in Mombasa in the past two years.
