The Elevator Show (TES) Dubai 2024 will be held on September 16-18 in the iconic Dubai World Trade Centre. The Spanish Government has introduced new legislation that will force building owners to modernize between 35 and 40% of the nation's elevators, Murcia Today reports. Spain has the most lifts installed per person with more than 400,000 having been in service for more than 30 years. The standard for the new safety requirements — Complementary Technical Instruction ITC AEM 1 for Elevators, as published in the Official State Gazette on April 13 — will come into force on July 1 and indicates that all elevators will have to have improved leveling, protection against door closing during entry and exit, protection against uncontrolled movements, a two-way communication system in case of emergency, replacement of wooden or cylindrical guides and the implementation of load control devices to avoid exceeding the cabin weight limit. Additionally, the standard stipulates how the commission of a new elevator must be carried out and regulates the frequency of inspections, according to NUWE.
FERNANDEZ ELECTED BUSINESS MANAGER FOR LOCAL 3
Matt Fernandez, a 39-year member of Elevator Constructors Local 3, has been elected as business manager, the Labor Tribune reports. Fernandez has served as a Local 3 business representative for the past three years and now succeeds former Business Manager Costel Zamfir, who was hired to work as an organizer for the International Union of Elevator Constructors. Pakistan Railways (PR) plans to install escalators to enhance accessibility at major stations throughout the network, as well as CCTV cameras to strengthen security, Hamari Web News reports. In announcing the initiative, PR CEO Amer Ali Baloch said the company seeks to address various public complaints through these measures, and will put a "robust mechanism" in place to prevent vandalism of the cameras. KONE CEO: DIGITALIZATION AND SUSTAINABILITY HOLD PROMISE IN CHINA
KONE CEO Philippe Delorme said the Finland-based OEM plans to further invest in China, particularly in the areas of digitalization and sustainability, which he described as the most important elevator industry trends both globally and in China, Bastille Post Global is among outlets to report. In an interview with China Central Television, Delorme observed that China has "vastly adopted digital technologies" in the past 10 years, as it works toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. MORE THAN 100 ELEVATORS TO BE REPLACED IN KYRGYZSTAN CAPITAL
More than 100 elevators in multistory buildings in Bishkek, the capital city of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, will be replaced this year, 24.kg News Agency is among outlets to report. Director of the municipal enterprise Bishkekgorlift Mairambek Samanchiev announced the work during a meeting of the Standing Committee on Housing and Community Services with Bishkek City Council. He said up to 70% of elevators in Bishkek have surpassed their service life and need replacement. Otis tells ELEVATOR WORLD it provided a six-unit elevator system for 420 Carroll Street, a two-tower residential development in Gowanus, Brooklyn, NY. Designed by FXCollaborative and developed by Domain Properties, the 20- and 15-story towers will be served by five Gen3 PeakTM elevators and one HydroFitTM machine-room-less, holeless hydraulic elevator, all equipped with the Otis ONETM Internet of Things solution. Aiming for LEED Platinum certification and slated for completion in spring 2025, according to New York YIMBY, 420 Carroll Street will include 360 residences, 27,500 ft2 of retail, a new public promenade along the Gowanus Canal and 7,700 ft2 of "Gowanus Mix" space per a zoning overhaul that involves 82 neighborhood blocks. Mega Contracting Group is serving as general contractor for the recently topped-out property — among the tallest planned as part of the neighborhood's transformation.
EIGHT INJURED IN INDIA HOTEL ELEVATOR INCIDENT
A lift at a hotel in Nagole, India, collapsed leaving the eight passengers injured, Times of India reported. The victims got into the lift on the fourth floor and were traveling down when the lift went out of control on the second floor and fell to the second cellar. US$343 MILLION AWARDED TO TRANSIT SYSTEMS FOR ACCESSIBILITY UPGRADES
Eight transit systems in eight states will receive a total of US$353 million in federal funding to make rail stations more accessible and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by adding elevators, ramps and more, the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced on May 28. FUJITEC DEBUTS ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY BIODIESEL FUEL IN COMPANY TRUCKS
As part of its effort to minimize environmental impact, Japan's Fujitec Co., Ltd., transitioned from diesel to biodiesel fuel in company trucks. The company began using biodiesel fuel in May in 4-t trucks owned by Big Step, which provides Fujitec's escalator, R&D and production truck fleet. The biodiesel fuel used is an environmentally friendly fuel that meets Japanese Industrial Standards equivalent to those of diesel fuel. Read more here
HISTORIC NJ TRANSIT STATION TO RECEIVE US$83-MILLION UPGRADE
Vertical-transportation equipment including elevators will be added to a historic NJ Transit commuter railroad station where riders have been walking up and down stairs for more than 100 years, PIX 11 is among outlets to report.
