Work has begun on a new 182-m glass elevator and viewing platforms that will be built on the cliffside overlooking the world-famous Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida, near Bali, The Bali Sun reports. The first stone for the project was laid in 2023 and it has since faced mixed response from local leaders and tourists. Brihanmumbai Metro Corp. (BMC) and Indian Railways (IR) teamed up to secure an exposed lift pit in Mulund, a northeast suburban of Mumbai, India, within 24 h of the publication mid-day reporting on residents' concerns, mid-day reported on June 17. With the open pit, which had sat idle for nearly a year, turning into a garbage dump and monsoon season upon the area, residents feared the spread of disease, as well as people accidentally falling into the pit. Vertical-transportation (VT) companies that exhibited at the 2024 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference on Architecture & Design (AIA24) on June 5-8 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., included Otis, Schindler, SnapCab, TK Elevator and VDA, Inc. Bringing in more than 15,000 attendees, the event gave VT companies the opportunity to showcase their offerings, including Schindler's MetaCore, a system that enables one elevator group to "serve multiple applications — such as residential, office, or hospitality — while delivering a bespoke transport experience for each passenger group," according to Schindler. ELDERLY WOMAN DIES AS A RESULT OF TOKYO ESCALATOR INCIDENT
A woman in her 80s died on June 12 as a result of her neck becoming trapped between the underside of an escalator handrail and the floor, Kyodo News is among outlets to report. Security footage from a supermarket in the Nishitokyo area of western Tokyo shows the woman falling as she attempts to lift a walker she was using while approaching the bottom of the escalator. Located in the South Loop on the western edge of Grant Park at 1000 S. Michigan Avenue, 1000M boasts a 73rd-floor observation deck — the highest rooftop observation deck in Chicago. Prolific Dubai developer Imtiaz Developments has broken ground on a new "vertical community": the 37-story Cove Residence in Dubailand, Dubai, Gulf News is among outlets to report. Scheduled for delivery in 2027, the property will be served by six residential elevators and will "seamlessly merge residential, commercial and leisure activities within a towering complex that offers a vibrant living experience."
