Got a favorite company in the elevator industry? If so, it's time to vote for ELEVATOR WORLD's Ellies 2024 Awards! More than 100 nominees are competing for top honors in 20 industry categories. Voting opened on August 1 and will continue through August 14. You can vote in as many categories as you wish, but only once per IP address per 24 hours. Please note, if your company shares an IP address for all employees, only one voter's entry will count within the 24-h time period. In this situation, we encourage people to also vote on their mobile phones, from their home or another location. OUIMET PROMOTED TO KJA COO
Toronto-headquartered vertical-transportation consultancy KJA announced on August 1 the promotion of Martin Ouimet from director, eastern Canada, to chief operating officer (COO). With more than 17 years at KJA, Ouimet has extensive experience including inspections and audits, development and implementation of national elevator maintenance programs, as well as engineering and supervising hundreds of projects. MULLEN APPOINTED EXPORT SALES MANAGER AT PEELLE
Brampton, Ontario-headquartered The Peelle Co. announced that Steve Mullen has been appointed export sales manager. Mullen has more than 30 years' experience with Peelle, starting there as a junior drafter in 1995. He has experience in product knowledge, engineering, project management and sales, making him instrumental in supporting Peelle customers in Europe, Asia and South America. In his new role, Mullen is overseeing implementation of company export sales strategies, customer relations and project coordination. He holds degrees in architecture and electrical/electronics engineering from Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ontario, respectively.

ELEVATOR ASSOCIATION OF MINNESOTA TO HOLD ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING
The Elevator Association of Minnesota (EAM), based in Mendota Heights, plans to hold its Annual Business Meeting (ABM) on September 6 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Minneapolis Airport in Bloomington. Registration and breakfast will be from 7-8 a.m., followed by the ABM from 8-8:30 a.m. Presentations are scheduled from 8:30-9:45 a.m. Read more here
 
ONE OF NATION'S LARGEST TKE EOX INSTALLATIONS IN CONNECTICUT
TK Elevator (TKE) will install 11 EOX elevators at The Corbin District in the heart of Darien, Connecticut, TKE New Installation Sales Executive Jennifer Monahan said on LinkedIn in July. It is currently one of the largest installations in the U.S. for EOX, a digitally native, energy-efficient TKE elevator launched in North America in 2023. Read more here
 
KONE WINS ORDER FOR EIGHT STATIONS FOR CHINA'S NEW LINE S2
KONE has won an order to supply a suite of people flow solutions for the new metro line S2 on the Nanjing to Ma'anshan intercity rail in East China. The delivery includes 69 KONE TransitMasterā„¢ 140 escalators along eight stations. Upon opening in 2025, S2 will play a key role in driving further regional economic integration between the Jiangsu Province capital, Nanjing, and the city of Ma'anshan in the neighboring province. Hilliard offers its customers two styles of spring applied electric released brakes that can be easily fitted to "A" frame elevator drives. These brakes are designed to apply when unintended travel of the car occurs. Hilliard offers a friction disc plate-style brake that attaches to the drive shaft of the pulley and a caliper-style that acts on a ring attached to the pulley. These brakes are an alternative to a rope gripper when performing a modernization job which requires lifting or moving a drive or extra construction to the elevator. SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 27th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology and overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2025 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The submission deadline is September 30.

LONDON RAIL STATION ADDS STEP-FREE ACCESS WITH LIFTS
Isleworth station in Hounslow in West London now boasts two new lifts on either side of the raised platforms thanks to a GBP1-million (US$1.28-million) investment from Hounslow Council and funding from the Department for Transport's (DfT) "Access for All" scheme (via Network Rail) used to create step-free access from the station entrance to the platforms, according to Network Rail. Weeki Wachee, Florida-headquartered Rise Elevator Services (RES) recently welcomed Brian Rye as consulting specialist for Florida's East Coast, RES owner and President Tim Rye Sr. announced on LinkedIn. OTIS ELEVATORS INTEGRATE WITH DELIVERY ROBOT AT POLISH HOTEL
At the Imperiall Resort & MediSpa on Poland's Baltic coast, guests receive deliveries to their rooms via a robot that integrates with the hotel's elevators using Otis' Integrated DispatchTM (OID) technology. Representing the first OID installation in Poland, the system allows the Keenon W3 delivery robot to place a call and enter and exit an elevator autonomously. In addition to delivering restaurant orders and items such as fresh towels to guest rooms, the robot can also escort guests to their rooms and provide information about hotel amenities and local activities. OID is an application programming interface solution that integrates autonomous service robots with Otis elevators. "The combination of Internet of Things and our expertise opens up new opportunities for customers and passengers alike," Otis Service Branch Manager Poland North Maciej Pichlak said.

KONE DIGITAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIA'S TALLEST BUILDING
Australia's tallest tower has introduced an extraordinary attraction ā€” the KONE Digital Experience Display elevator, Australia's first-of-its-kind sustainable and immersive elevator experience ā€” through a partnership between KONE and SkyPoint, Inside Construction reports. INDUSTRY SUPPLIERS ADDED TO U.K. LIFTS FRAMEWORK
U.K. procurement agency Fusion21 has selected 37 suppliers for the fourth generation of its national lifts framework, which is expected to be worth GBP80 million (US$102.48 million) over its four-year term, The Construction Index reports. The framework has been designed to deliver lift-related works and services to estates across the public sector, including housing, education and healthcare providers across the U.K. down to a regional and local level. IUEC ANNOUNCES VOLUNTARY INCOME PROTECTION PLAN
The International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) on August 1 announced the IUEC Voluntary Income Protection (VIP) Plan to enhance financial security of all active U.S.-, Puerto Rico- and Guam-based full dues-paying IUEC members. The first open-enrollment period ends on August 23 with a coverage effective date of September 1, and the second one invites members to enroll by October 25 for a coverage effective date of November 1. MASSPORT ACCEPTING BIDS FOR US$21.5-MILLION VT MAINTENANCE CONTRACT
The Massachusetts Port Authority (MassPort) is accepting bids electronically through August 21 for a three-year vertical-transportation (VT) maintenance contract that includes elevator, escalator and moving walk maintenance at all MassPort properties. These include Logan International Airport in East Boston and facilities in Boston, South Boston, Bedford, Worcester and Framingham. Read more here

JES OPENS NEW BRANCH AND SERVICE OFFICES
Japan Elevator Service Holdings Co., Ltd., (JES) a Tokyo-headquartered provider of maintenance and repair for elevators and escalators, has announced a newly opened branch and service offices for the purpose of strengthening services to its customers: the Kouiki Branch, Kyushu Regional Head Office, in Fukuoka; the Shunan Service Office, Hiroshima Branch, in Yamaguchi; and the Tosu Service Office, Kyushu Branch, Kyushu Regional Head Office, in Saga. Japan Elevator Service Co., Ltd., was established in Iwamoto-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, in 1994. The company now services approximately 100,000 elevators.
 
TEXAS AIRPORT LAUNCHES ESCALATOR SAFETY CAMPAIGN
The Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport has launched a new safety campaign to reduce preventable escalator accidents that can cause injuries, disrupt travel plans and take equipment out of service, MSN reports. Common causes for escalator falls include carrying heavy bags or more than one bag, pre-existing balance issues, not holding the handrails, turning around, multitasking and inattention. FOUR SEVERELY INJURED IN INDIA WHEN ELEVATOR FALLS IN APARTMENT BUILDING
Four family members, ages 69, 65, 48 and 31, were severely injured on August 2 as a result of the elevator in which they were riding fell more than 60 ft at an apartment building in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, in eastern central India, The Times of India is among outlets to report. All suffered fractures, and two were in critical condition. Two children onboard "miraculously escaped unhurt." Read more here
 
CALIFORNIA COURTHOUSE BUILDING TO GET ELEVATOR
A nearly US$2-million contract for a three-story elevator addition to the Tuolumne County government-owned historic Yaney Avenue courthouse building in Sonora, California, was approved by the county's elected supervisors, The Union Democrat reports. Installing an elevator will be a significant step toward preserving the building, enabling use of the whole building. Reuse now requires Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, which calls for installation of the elevator. Read more here

AFG TO PROVIDE ELEVATOR RESCUE TRAINING AND MORE TO FIREFIGHTERS IN NEW JERSEY CITY
U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer on August 1 announced a new US$161,702 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) that will help the Fire Department in Englewood, New Jersey, take three critical rescue courses: elevator rescue, rope rescue and man versus machine rescue. Gottheimer said the latest grant is part of more than US$4 million in federal grant funding he has helped secure for north New Jersey since 2018. "In a hustling and bustling city like Englewood, there are hundreds of elevators and industrial machines that have a risk of breaking down," Gottheimer observed. Training sessions designed to help firefighters better respond to and rescue residents from elevators and industrial machines will be hosted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

OVERHAUL OF EASTERN HYDERABAD, INDIA, STATION INCLUDES NEW VT
A massive overhaul of South Central Railway's (SCR) Cherlapally station in eastern Hyderabad, India, includes new vertical-transportation (VT) equipment, specifically, seven lifts and six escalators serving all nine platforms, The New Indian Express reports. The INR4.3 billion (US$51.2 million) project is in its final stages as SCR gears up for the traffic increase that comes with rapid development in the areas near Outer Ring Road. Upon completion, the revamped Cherlapally station will be able to handle 15 additional pairs of trains with 10 additional lines. There will be four additional platforms, and the existing five platforms are being expanded to accommodate full-length trains.

WORLD'S TALLEST MASS-TIMBER BUILDING ENVISIONED IN MILWAUKEE
The Neutral Project, LLC, has been selected by the City of Milwaukee to redevelop an underutilized city-controlled site: the Marcus Performing Arts Center parking garage at 101 North Water Street, Woodworking Network was among outlets to report in July. With a total investment of approximately US$700 million, the proposal includes a mass-timber building or buildings that would "dwarf" the world's current tallest mass-timber building, the 284.1-ft-tall Ascent, also in Milwaukee and served by an Otis elevator system.
