Champion's Don Gelestino, Frank Feniello and Robert Masterson are leading the ambitious project, which involves full-service maintenance for 180 elevators and modernization of 16 passenger cars. The Champion team is collaborating with suppliers Vantage and Hollister-Whitney, and the elevators' appearance will get a boost from new stainless-steel cabs and entrances from United Vertical Group. The project is expected to take approximately 22 weeks. "These essential elevators, crucial for daily operations within Co-op City, will undergo a comprehensive transformation to enhance efficiency, safety and reliability," Champion stated. The work, for which ground was broken on August 5, is part of a US$850 million program largely covered by federal funds that will see 13 MTA stations made fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, outlets including amNewYork reported. The Classon Avenue station is on the G line, which Brooklyn Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who attended the groundbreaking, observed is "an incredibly important subway line for the Clinton Hill, Fort Greene and Bedford-Stuyvesant communities." MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said the project is part of what the MTA calls its "largest design-build bundle of accessibility upgrades to date." | | | ā IUEC ANNOUNCES VOLUNTARY INCOME PROTECTION PLAN | | | The International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) on August 1 announced the IUEC Voluntary Income Protection (VIP) Plan to enhance financial security of all active U.S.-, Puerto Rico- and Guam-based full dues-paying IUEC members. IUEC General President Frank Christensen introduced the plan to all regional directors, union officers and members by saying, "Member safety and the ability to financially protect themselves and their loved ones is a priority for IEUC." Administered by union benefits specialist Union One, the plan boasts generous coverage for short-term disability, long-term disability and accidental death and dismemberment, or AD&D. The first open-enrollment period ends on August 23 with a coverage effective date of September 1, and the second one invites members to enroll by October 25 for a coverage effective date of November 1. | | | AFG TO PROVIDE ELEVATOR RESCUE TRAINING AND MORE TO FIREFIGHTERS IN ENGLEWOOD, NJ | | | U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer in August announced a new US$161,702 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) that will help the Fire Department in Englewood, New Jersey, take three critical rescue courses: elevator rescue, rope rescue and man versus machine rescue. Gottheimer said the latest grant is part of more than US$4 million in federal grant funding he has helped secure for north New Jersey since 2018. "In a hustling and bustling city like Englewood, there are hundreds of elevators and industrial machines that have a risk of breaking down," Gottheimer observed. He holds a BS in leadership and management studies from the United States Military Academy West Point and an Executive MBA in management and strategy from Fordham University. In June, crews were starting work on the mechanical bulkhead, with faƧade installation to follow. The escalator takes passengers from the Transportation Security Administration security level down to the concourse level. The purpose of NAEC QEI certification is to ensure inspectors have the skills, knowledge and education to safeguard the public by confirming elevators, escalators and other conveyances are code-compliant and operating safely. "It's not too late to register and earn continuing-education (CE), CEU, and New York State CE credits," NAEC stated. | | | ā PROBLEMATIC ELEVATORS AT LIC RESIDENTIAL TOWER CREATE ANXIETY | | | Problematic elevators at the 38-story residential Hunter's Point South Commons tower in Long Island City (LIC), Queens, are creating anxiety for the rent-stabilized and -subsidized residents who live there, with some saying it is a public safety issue, CBS News was among outlets to report earlier this month. Two of the three elevators are regularly out of service, and the wait for the one working elevator can be up to 25 min., residents said. The Department of Buildings has noted elevator violations at the property at 1-10 50th Avenue dating back to 2015 and has ordered landlord Related Cos. to make necessary repairs. Both Related and elevator maintenance provider KONE said they are working to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. KONE said, additionally, that it has "expedited obtaining parts from the manufacturer of these non-KONE elevators that are required to return (them) to operation as soon as possible." | | Hunters Point South Commons; image courtesy of Related Cos. | | | EAST FLATBUSH WOMAN HOSPITALIZED AS A RESULT OF ELEVATOR FALL | | | A 56-year-old East Flatbush, Brooklyn, woman was hospitalized as a result of the elevator she was riding in a six-story apartment building at 305 Linden Avenue falling "multiple stories," News12 Brooklyn was among outlets to report on August 13. The New York City Fire Department said she suffered injuries to her leg and ankle when the elevator "disconnected from the cables" and dropped unexpectedly. Residents told the source the elevator has had issues in the past, including that its doors fail to fully close. The incident left one wing of the building without a functioning elevator, which residents said creates problems for seniors and other mobility-challenged individuals living there. | | | ELEVATOR PREPARATION BEGINS IN CENTRAL PARK WEST | | | Construction officially began in July for an elevator at the West 81st Street-Museum of Natural History subway station at the southwest corner of Central Park West, West Side Rag reports. The station entrance will remain open for the duration of the work, but the southwest station entrance is expected to close at the beginning of the second phase of work. Work has also begun at the B and C train station entrance at the southwest corner of West 97th Street and Central Park West, which will also be getting a new elevator. | | | ā ADAMS' US$112.4-BILLION 2025 BUDGET ADDRESSES AFFORDABLE HOUSING | | | The New York City Hall Press Office announced on July 2 Mayor Eric Adams and fellow lawmakers were celebrating passage of an "on-time, balanced and fiscally responsible" US$112.4-billion fiscal year 2025 adopted budget that includes US$2 billion specially for preservation and rehabilitation of public-housing residences. In total, the Adams administration has committed a record US$26 billion toward housing over the next 10 years, a "historic," record-breaking investment that will support Adams' goal of building 500,000 new homes by 2032. Preservation of the NYC Housing Authority's (NYCHA) housing stock is critical amid the current housing crisis, NYCHA CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt said.
