PROJECT OF THE YEAR DEADLINE EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 30
The submission deadline for ELEVATOR WORLD'S 27th annual Project of the Year Awards has been extended to October 30. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects are judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology and overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2025 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition.

2024 ELLIES AWARD WINNERS AND RUNNERS-UP ANNOUNCED
Congratulations to the 2024 Ellies Award winners and runners-up. Each was announced live on-stage on September 25 at NAEC's 2024 United Convention. Winners were presented their custom Ellies trophies, and runners-up were given a certificate of appreciation. KONE ANNOUNCES PROMOTION OF MARGOT TAYLOR

Hilliard offers its customers two styles of spring applied electric released brakes that can be easily fitted to "A" frame elevator drives. These brakes are designed to apply when unintended travel of the car occurs. Hilliard offers a friction disc plate-style brake that attaches to the drive shaft of the pulley and a caliper-style that acts on a ring attached to the pulley. These brakes are an alternative to a rope gripper when performing a modernization job which requires lifting or moving a drive or extra construction to the elevator. FUJITEC DELIVERS 100-PLUS UNITS TO TOKYO COMPLEX
Fujitec Co., Ltd. has delivered a total of 102 elevators and escalators to Shibuya Sakura Stage, a large-scale complex facility in Shibuya, Tokyo, that opened on July 25. This is the second project for the Fujitec Group consisting of more 100 units in Japan. Fujitec delivered 48 original, custom-designed elevators and 54 escalators that are distinctive to this cultural facility. Read more here

U.K. LIFT SPECIALIST COMPLETES FIVE ACQUISITIONS WITH BACKING
Dudley, U.K.-based lift maintenance and repair specialist Deltron Group has completed five acquisitions since LDC made a minority investment in July, TheBusinessDesk.com is among outlets to report. The company has acquired Metro Lifts (London), Elevate UK Lifts (Stourport-on-Severn), Elevator Group (London), A1 Lifts (Liverpool) and Lift Control (Livingston). Read more here

NAEC SALES DIRECTOR ROLE TRANSITIONS FROM WOLKING TO SANCHEZ
The national sales director role at the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) has transitioned from Lori Wolking to Paula Sanchez, with Wolking announcing she is pursuing a new opportunity. "It has been an incredible journey," Wolking said. "I'm truly grateful for the time I've spent here." Wolking said she is especially proud of growing the sponsorship program and being part of the Women in Motion group. Based in the Washington, D.C., metro area, Wolking is a certified association executive who previously worked for the National Asphalt Pavement Association and Associated Builders and Contractors. ZIEHL-ABEGG APPOINTS JOACHIM LEY AS CEO
Ziehl-Abegg has announced that Chief Operating Officer (COO) Joachim Ley, who has been with the company since 2021 and played an active role in shaping the company's global growth, has been appointed as the new CEO of Ziehl-Abegg. FUJITEC UK NAMES BURCHETT MAJOR PROJECTS SALES DIRECTOR
Fujitec UK announced that Paul Burchett has been named its major projects sales director. "Paul is very well known throughout the industry and is incredibly diligent in everything he does," Fujitec UK stated. Bringing a wealth of experience, Burchett promises to "tender and secure great projects that will showcase Fujitec's products" in the U.K. Burchett joins Fujitec from TK Elevator, where he served as head of new installation sales, based in London, for nearly three years. His past work experience includes projects director, fulfillment, Large Projects Hub, for Schindler UK, a position he held for more than seven years; and sales manager, Major Projects, for KONE, for which he worked for more than 26 years.

NEXT INSPECTOR TRAINEE PROGRAM BEGINS JANUARY 21
NAESA International has announced that the next Inspector Trainee Program class begins on January 21, 2025. The program was developed to assist hiring authorities with QEI code level training for future elevator inspectors. KEY SRI LANKA VT PROJECTS OF HYUNDAI ELEVATOR AGENT HIGHLIGHTED

ELEVATOR PROJECT TO MAKE WESTERN WALL MORE ACCESSIBLE
A long-awaited project is underway to make the site at the Western Wall in Jerusalem — adjacent to Judaism's most sacred site, the Temple Mount — more accessible with a much-needed elevator, The Washington Times reports. The elevators — each with a capacity of 30 people — will take visitors up and down the 85-ft gap between the Jewish Quarter and the Western Wall, or Kotel. When the project is complete, organizers expect thousands to use the elevators daily. Read more here

ODESA, UKRAINE, AUTHORITIES TENDER ELEVATOR MAINTENANCE CONTRACTS
Authorities in Odesa, Ukraine, recently held several tenders to select elevator maintenance companies, Intent reports. As long as the company is able to eliminate tender document inconsistencies, Gamayun Lift Ltd. Liability Co. will service 406 elevators through December 31, 2025, for the city's Chornomorsky Housing and Communal Service under a UAH6.86-million (US$166,626) contract. Read more here

MTA RELEASES PLAN FOR SUBWAY STATION WITHOUT ELEVATOR
New York State Sen. Cordell Cleare, chair of the committee on aging, wrote a letter in August calling on Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) chair and CEO Janno Lieber to include plans for implementing an elevator at the 125th Street and Broadway subway station in the MTA's 2025-2029 Capital Plan. The MTA released its proposed plan on September 25, with no mention of the train station, the Columbia Daily Spectator reports. Read more here

DSPS DETERMINES CAUSE OF MILWAUKEE ESCALATOR MALFUNCTION
Wisconsin's Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) has determined the cause of a June 29 escalator malfunction at the American Family Field baseball stadium, home of Major League Baseball team the Milwaukee Brewers, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, CBS 58 is among outlets to report. LEIA LOOKS AT INDUSTRY IMPLICATIONS OF GRENFELL PHASE 2 REPORT
The Grenfell Inquiry Phase 2 report published in early September was the culmination of more than seven years of work by the inquiry and followed publication of the Phase 1 report nearly five years ago, the Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) reports. TÜV SÜD WORLD'S FIRST NB FOR NEW MACHINERY REGULATION
TÜV SÜD announced it has become the world's first Notified Body (NB 0123) for the new EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 (EU-MR) to appear on the European Commission's NANDO website as recognized, listed and authorized to perform the special conformity assessment procedures according to Article 25 for machinery as set out in Annex I of the new Regulation. NEW PROJECT TEAM APPOINTED FOR 24-STORY CAMDEN TOWER
Cartwright Pickard has replaced Grid Architects on long-delayed plans to build a 24-story block of flats in Camden in London, U.K., Building reports. The 100 Avenue Road site was purchased by residential developer Regal earlier this year. The project was originally approved nine years ago but was subsequently beset by an array of planning and construction delays. Read more here
