We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Read more here | | 190 NEW TKE VT UNITS PART OF NEW SYDNEY METRO CITY LINE TKE announced on October 22 that 190 new vertical-transportation (VT) units are a key part of the newly inaugurated Sydney Metro City Line in Sydney, Australia. The TKE escalators and elevators are part of a landmark project that "is set to revolutionize how commuters travel across Sydney." The new line opened in August, seeing remarkable success with approximately 200,000 passenger trips daily. TKE's VT solutions enhance accessibility and traffic flow by providing essential "last mile" connectivity that allows passengers to easily transition from train to final destination. All TKE VT units on the Sydney Metro City Line, as well as additional third-party units, will be supported by TKE's Universal Service platform that offers comprehensive service for timely maintenance, repair and inspection. BROOKLYN HOSPITAL CENTER SECURES US$2 MILLION FOR ESCALATOR UPGRADES Leaders at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in Brooklyn, NY, were joined by NY State Sen. Andrew Gounardes on October 16 to announce US$2 million in state funding for modernizing the facility's two escalators, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle is among outlets to report. The hospital ā a safety-net facility essential for Brooklyn residents who otherwise could not afford medical care ā saw a record 30,000 patients come through its emergency room in 2023. O'Shea's marathon journey is inspired by his brother Morty O'Shea's battle with multiple myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer. After a diagnosis in 2013 and the cancer taking a critical turn in 2021, Morty relocated from County Donegal, Ireland, to the U.S. and received life-saving experimental treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. DrakaEHC.com Advertisement | | | IN MEMORIAM: FRANCIS "FRANK" FERRARA Francis "Frank" Ferrara, a retired state of Massachusetts elevator inspector, passed away on September 29, 2024, at the age of 70. Ferrara, of Burlington, Massachusetts, became a licensed elevator technician with Otis after serving in the military, including four years during the Vietnam War. He installed and maintained elevators throughout Boston and Southern New Hampshire, gaining a reputation for his detailed knowledge and calm demeanor, "even when working in elevator shafts in skyscrapers in Boston." After retiring from Otis, Ferrara went to work for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, where he loved to share his expertise and ensure the safety of both the riding public and elevator technicians. He retired for good in 2019. True to his Italian values, Ferrara always put family first. He was a classic car enthusiast who restored numerous vintage Chevrolets. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Fe; sons, Joseph and Christopher; three siblings; and four grandchildren. INDIA RAILWAY STATION REDEVELOPMENT NEARLY 50% COMPLETE Redevelopment of the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corp. (MRVC) Ghatkopar Railway Station, a key suburban Mumbai, India, metro hub, is nearly 50% complete, The Free Press Journal reports. The first phase, which included installation of seven new escalators, had only finishing touches remaining, with the second phase, including seven new escalators and four elevators, already underway. Advertisement | | | ELEVATOR MODERNIZATION UNDERWAY AT CHICAGOLAND OPHA TOWER In a letter to the editor of the Wednesday Journal of Oak Park and River Forest, Oak Park Housing Authority (OPHA) Executive Director David Pope said OPHA is currently undertaking a US$680,000 elevator modernization at Mills Park Tower (MPT), a 19-story, 198-unit public housing structure built more than 50 years ago. Pope said each of the two elevators will be taken out of service for up to 16 weeks to accommodate the work. Read more here HOSPITAL ELEVATOR TO BE REPLACED IN SOUTHWESTERN UKRAINE Leaders of the nonprofit Chornomorskaya Hospital in the Odesa Oblast province of southwestern Ukraine along the northern coast of the Black Sea announced open bidding to install a new elevator will occur on November 6, Intent reports, citing the electronic procurement system Prozorro. The purchase price is expected to be UAH2.36 million (US$57,217). Under the open-bidding process, terms are shortened, meaning procurement is much faster. The period for submitting proposals is seven calendar days, and challenges to qualifications may be submitted over five days. However, during such tenders there is often no auction, so the participant has no competitors. In 2022, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine temporarily canceled electronic auctions, more recently deciding that tenders announced in Prozorro can be held without an auction. INACCESSIBILITY AT KEY NYC SUBWAY STATION FOCUS OF MEETING The most recent Elevator Lobby meeting on October 7 focused on the continued battle for accessibility improvements ā namely, an elevator and modernized escalators ā at a key Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) subway station in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, NY, the Columbia Spectator reports. One of the highest above-ground stations in NYC, the 125th Street and Broadway station has no elevator, and its escalators often malfunction. The woman was traveling via commuter rail and the MBTA Orange Line from her home in Rockport, Massachusetts, to the medical center to visit her husband. Advertisement | | | CHILD INJURED IN THANE ELEVATOR FALL An 11-year-old child was injured on October 21 when an elevator at a residential high rise in Thane, India, crashed from the first floor, The Print reports. The incident occurred in a 41-story building on Pokhran Road No. 1 when the cable of the lift snapped after reaching the first floor. The lift then fell back to the ground floor. Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Vartaknagar police station, fire brigade with one emergency tender and staff from the Disaster Management Cell with a pickup vehicle, arrived swiftly at the scene, according to the source. Three other people in the lift were unhurt and the child suffered a left leg injury. LONDON GATE AND FRANCK MULLER LAUNCH ANOTHER DUBAI TOWER Dubai-based developer London Gate and Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Franck Muller are launching their second branded luxury residential tower in less than a year: the Franck Muller Vantage Tower, International Business Magazine reports. Located in Dubai Marina, the 34-story structure will offer 722 residences of various sizes and amenities that include fitness centers, swimming pools, lounges, secure parking and full concierge services. Handover is anticipated in September 2027. London Gate CEO Eman Taha said three of its projects ā Nadine 1, Nadine 2 and Maya 5 ā were completed ahead of schedule.
