PROJECT OF THE YEAR DEADLINE EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 30
The submission deadline for ELEVATOR WORLD'S 27th annual Project of the Year Awards has been extended to October 30. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects are judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology and overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2025 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition.

KONE ELEVATORS INDIA EXPANDS WITH A NEW OFFICE IN KERALA
KONE Elevators India has announced the opening of its new office in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, CXOtoday.com reports. The new office, located on Ulloor-Akkulam Road, will cater to KONE India's existing projects, such as Sun Tech Infrastructure Pvt. Washington, D.C.-based Quality Elevator has announced a partnership with Axxiom Elevator, an independent elevator services company doing business across Florida, Arizona and the Washington, D.C. area. LIFT COMM COLLABORATES WITH NYC MTA ON ACCESSIBILITY UPGRADES
Lift Communications (Lift Comm), a subsidiary of TEC Solutions Concepts Inc. based in New Jersey, announced it is collaborating with the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on accessibility upgrades at the MTA Queensboro Plaza subway station in Long Island City, Queens. As part of the project, Lift Comm is installing advanced two-way elevator communications systems to ensure that all passengers, including those who are visually and hearing impaired, have access to reliable and accessible communication when using the station. SCHMERSAL GROUP NAMES RAMJI SINGH AS MANAGING DIRECTOR
The Schmersal Group has appointed Ramji Singh as the new managing director of its subsidiary Schmersal India Pvt. Ltd. The takeover of the management comes into force with immediate effect. NAESA INTERNATIONAL AWARDS 2024 JOHN STEELE SCHOLARSHIPS
NAESA International recently announced the 2024 John Steele Memorial Scholarship winners. In evaluating seven applications for the scholarship, the "process went well with very tight scoring between the applicants," according to NAESA. The recipients of the scholarships are Nicole Marineci, the daughter of Valentin Marineci, a NAESA member since 2022; Ibraheem Mohammed, the son of Shoeeb Mohammed, a NAESA member since 2009; Maria Stavropoulos, the daughter of Athanasios Stavropoulos, a NAESA member since 2015; and Lucy Lee, the daughter of John Michael Lee, a NAESA member since 2022. The John Steele Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually by the NAESA Canadian Region in memory of John Steele. The four scholarships are awarded to the child or grandchild of a NAESA Canadian Region member in good standing whose membership remains active.

OOMA AIRDIAL POTS REPLACEMENT ADDS CERTIFICATIONS

KONE'S THIRD QUARTER PROFIT BELOW EXPECTATIONS DUE TO CHINA SLUMP
KONE will focus on modernizing and servicing existing lifts as it sees no end to China's construction slump and has reported third-quarter profit below expectations, Reuters reports. China ā€” the company's main market ā€” is in a property downturn with few signs of revival. KONE recently announced a new global strategy refocusing on modernization and service instead of selling equipment for new buildings. Read more here

NEW TAIPEI MAYOR ORDERS ELEVATOR INSPECTION AFTER FALLS
New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi will order a third-party review of two recent incidents in which city-operated elevators malfunctioned and fell soon after undergoing maintenance, the Tapei Times is among outlets to report. In the first incident, the cable of an elevator at the New Taipei City Funeral Parlor in Banciao District snapped, causing it to drop from the building's second floor to the ground, lightly injuring the three workers inside. CECA ANNOUNCES MCP UPDATES
The Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) announced it has added further verbiage to its disclaimer on the Maintenance Control Program (MCP) logbooks and Maintenance Requirement Logs, as well as updated Appendix A in its documents. Additionally, all updated MCPs can be found on the CECA website in the members only section under the applicable codes. Read more here
 
EFESME SBS TRAINING ON STANDARDIZATION IN THE LIFT SECTOR
The European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (EFESME) and Small Business Standards (SBS) plan to host the second 2024 SBS national training session on standardization in the lift sector on November 28. Training will cover topics of high relevance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including the SBS report on SMEs' inclusiveness in national standardization, the ongoing evolution of standards in the lift sector and how SMEs can participate in standardization processes at the national and European levels. The in-person training will take place at the Technical University of Sofia in Sofia, Bulgaria. "The event will be a great opportunity to meet Bulgarian lift SMEs, as well as representatives of the Bulgarian Institute for Standardization, to create a virtuous circle of training and information," organizers said.

SABINE NITZSCHE APPOINTED TƜV SƜD AG CFO
Sabine Nitzsche has been appointed by the Supervisory Board of TƜV SƜD AG as the new chief financial officer (CFO) and member of the Board of Management with effect from March 1, 2025. ESCALATOR UPGRADE IN STORE FOR PENNSYLVANIA AIRPORT
Thanks to US$3 million in federal funding announced by U.S. Senators Bob Casey and John Fetterman of Pennsylvania on October 22, Harrisburg International Airport in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, will be getting new escalators. Made possible by the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), the funding will also go toward renovating bathrooms throughout the terminal. Read more here
 
CHILD DIES IN INDIA ELEVATOR PIT INCIDENT
A five-year-old boy drowned after falling into a water-filled pit in Kannamangala, Mahadevapura, India on October 23, India Today reports. At approximately 5 ft deep, the pit had been dug for the installation of an elevator in a new milk dairy building. Due to heavy rains, the pit had filled with water, creating a hazardous situation. According to reports, no precautions or barriers were put in place to prevent accidents. Read more here

OEM PROVIDES ON-SITE TRAINING FOR MISSOURI COURTHOUSE PERSONNEL
Gasconade County, Missouri, courthouse personnel received on-site training for their new elevator, the Gasconade County Republican reports. REVAMPED TORONTO TOWER PLAN POINTS TO POST-PANDEMIC TREND
H&R REIT has resubmitted plans for its tower development at 310 and 330 Front Street West in Toronto's Entertainment District to add a residential tower and eliminate an office building, pointing to the post-pandemic trend of foregoing office space in favor of residential density, Urban Toronto reports. The revamped plan is for 65- and 70-story mixed-used towers designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects. Read more here
 
CIA TO HOST CAN AND CANOPEN SEMINAR FOR NEWCOMERS
The nonprofit CAN in Automation (CiA) association plans to host an on-site seminar in the German language for newcomers to CAN and CANopen, which includes CANopen Lift, the CAN communication platform for elevator control systems. The event is set to take place on November 7 from 9:00 to 17:00 Coordinated Universal Time at the CiA office in Nuremberg, Germany. Participants will learn the basics of CANopen CC (CiA 301), additional CANopen CC functions and CANopen device/application profiles. As CANopen is a CAN-based higher-layer protocol, the seminar also covers aspects of the CAN physical layer and CAN data link. Additionally, an introduction to the CANopen FD protocol (CiA 1301) will be provided.
