Bruce MacKinnon for advertising. | | | PROJECT OF THE YEAR DEADLINE EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 30 | | | The submission deadline for ELEVATOR WORLD'S 27th annual Project of the Year Awards has been extended to October 30. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects are judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology and overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2025 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. | | | KONE ANNOUNCES AMBITIOUS NEW 2025-2030 STRATEGY, "RISE" | | | On September 19, KONE announced its ambitious new 2025-2030 strategy, "Rise," with which it aims to lead in employee and customer experience, sustainability, innovation, growth and profitability. Effective January 1, 2025, "Rise" includes four strategic components: accelerate digital to fundamentally transform how KONE provides service, drive modernization to unleash growth opportunities, win residential work to lead in the vertical-transportation (VT) industry's largest segment and cut carbon to drive customer value and differentiation. Read more here | | | TKE HANDLING MAJOR COLOGNE SUBWAY ESCALATOR MODERNIZATION | | | TK Elevator (TKE) announced on September 17 it has been awarded a major escalator modernization contract to modernize numerous escalators serving subway stations in Cologne, Germany. The project includes 23 new victoria heavy-duty escalators and the MAX Internet of Things smart monitoring and digital technology solution to minimize maintenance and downtime. Ley, who holds a degree in industrial engineering, has been active as the company's COO since 2021. Read more here | | | ARMENIA CAPITAL PUSHES FOR OLD ELEVATOR REPLACEMENT | | | All old elevators in residential buildings in Yerevan, Armenia, must be replaced within four years, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan said on September 23, ARKA News Agency reports. The head of the Yerevan Municipality Department of Public Utilities, Arsen Karoyan, reported that 286 new elevators are currently to be replaced, of which 112 have already been installed. Read more here | | | TĆV SĆD WORLD'S FIRST NB FOR NEW MACHINERY REGULATION | TĆV SĆD announced it has become the world's first Notified Body (NB 0123) for the new EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 (EU-MR) to appear on the European Commission's NANDO website as recognized, listed and authorized to perform the special conformity assessment procedures acc. to Article 25 for machinery as set out in Annex I of the new Regulation. This new item of EU harmonization legislation came into force in July 2023, repealing the previous Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Read more here | | | CTBUH PRESIDENT ANTONY WOOD TO STEP DOWN | After nearly 20 years at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), Dr. Antony Wood has made the decision to step down as president at the end of this year. Wood joined CTBUH in a voluntary role in 2004 as vice president for Europe and Research before being invited to Chicago to take up the executive directorship (later, CEO) in 2006. During his tenure, CTBUH has grown from one staff member in 2006 to a global entity. As long as the company is able to eliminate tender document inconsistencies, Gamayun Lift Limited Liability Co. will service 406 elevators through December 31, 2025, for the city's Chornomorsky Housing and Communal Service under a UAH6.86-million (US$166,626) contract. Read more here | | | OTIS REALIZES OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH CHINA VT RENEWAL | U.S.-based OEM Otis is realizing vast business opportunities through China's vertical-transportation (VT) renewal programs, particularly local governments' plans to modernize more than 40,000 residential elevators that are older than 20 years, Bastille Post Global reports. The source observed that Otis has been in the Chinese market for approximately 40 years, establishing factories in Tianjin, Hangzhou and Jiaxing in addition to an R&D center in Shanghai.
