SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 28th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology, as well as overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2026 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The Space Needle's new Skyliner elevator, the first of its kind in North America and only the second in the world, opened to the public on May 23 in Seattle, Washington, outlets including PR Newswire report. TKE AWARDED 55-UNIT PBB CONTRACT AT KWI
TK Elevator (TKE) announced on May 26 it will provide, install and maintain 55 Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs) at Kuwait International Airport (KWI) just south of the Kuwait City center. The contract builds on TKE's long-standing relationship with KWI and further strengthens the OEM's position as a leading airport and infrastructure solutions provider in the Middle East. The customized PBBs feature a unique steel and glass design, ensuring compatibility with all aircraft types. Minnesota-headquartered APi Group has acquired Bronx, NY-based Start Elevator, a company founded in 1992 by Jack O'Shea that has more than 120 teammates. The move follows APi's acquisition of Tampa, Florida-based Elevated Facility Service Group in 2024. Like Elevated, Start will be a part of APi's Safety Services segment. CHANGES TO PUBLIC SAFETY ACT TO HELP ELEVATOR INSPECTIONS
The government of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada is making an amendment to the Public Safety Act in hopes of speeding up elevator inspections, the CBC reports. This comes just days after a heated exchange in the House of Assembly over the fact that approximately 65% of elevator inspections required in 2024 didn't happen. The province requires all elevators to be inspected once a year, but there are only three government inspectors. With the new "Liftboy" app, Wiener Linien, Vienna, Austria's public transport operator, enables the contactless control of its elevators via Bluetooth, Vienna Online reports. This is intended to make boarding easier for people with mobility impairments, according to the company. By the end of 2025, all elevators should have this function. Users can call the elevator via mobile phone from a distance of 10 to 15 m and extend the door opening and closing times of the elevator from 3 to up to 12 s. Read more here
ENGINEERING SIMULATION PROJECT TARGETS HOSPITAL ELEVATOR DELAYS
A final-year capstone project from Dalhousie University's industrial engineering program is helping explore practical ways to manage elevator delays at the QEII Health Sciences Centre's Halifax Infirmary (HI) in Canada, where construction-related changes have affected how patients and visitors move through the site and increased elevator use, leading to congestion and some delays, according to Nova Scotia Health. PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT TO INSTALL WHEELCHAIR LIFTS AT EDSA BUSWAY STATIONS
All EDSA (Epifanio de los Santos Avenue) Busway stations in the Philippines will have a wheelchair lift to accommodate persons with disabilities, senior citizens and pregnant women, the Philippine News Agency reports. Officials said the installation of elevators was in accordance with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to improve the public's commuting experience. Hyundai Elevator signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Samsung C&T at its Modular Elevator R&D Lab in Seobuk-gu, Cheonan, Chungnam, South Korea, on May 16, the Korea It Times reports. The signing ceremony was attended by Samsung C&T Head of M&E Division Jo In-soo and Hyundai Elevator's Chief Technology Officer Lee Tae-won, along with representatives from both companies. DL CONSTRUCTION DEVELOPS ECO-FRIENDLY ELEVATOR PIT TECHNOLOGY
DL Construction, a leading construction company in Korea, obtained a green technology certification from the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and Startups in April, ChosunBiz reports. The certification recognizes the excellence of the "corrosion-resistant elevator pit construction technology" developed with Lotte Engineering & Construction, Doosan and Jaytech E&C. DL Construction found that constructing elevator pits with a steel structure using corrosion-resistant plates, side seals and multi-purpose plates instead of the existing cast-in-place concrete method reduced the excavation depth and decreased the amount of reinforced concrete used for the foundation. The company found that the amount of steel used can be reduced by approximately 72% compared to existing technology, and the amount of concrete used can be reduced by about 84%, significantly conserving material usage. The result of the construction technology is an 80% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. | | | Preparations for interlift 2025 are underway! Beijing was among the first cities in China to install elevators in residential buildings, and now, with nearly 30% of the city's elevators aging, concerns have been raised as breakdowns become increasingly frequent. NORTH DAKOTA COURTHOUSE NEEDS ELEVATOR REPLACEMENT
North Dakota's Ward County Commission is looking at cost of approximately US$400,000 to replace a courthouse elevator that is becoming less reliable, as it is somewhere between 57 and 61 years old, the Minot Daily News reports. Officials do not know how much longer the unit will last or whether it meets Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
