Elevator World Inc.'s prestigious and wildly popular Ellies Awards are now coming to Europe. Established seven years ago in North America, the first Ellies Awards Europe will recognize European vertical-transportation industry businesses that have gone above and beyond for their customers, employees and communities. SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 28th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology, as well as overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. TK Elevator (TKE), headquartered in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Alat, a Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), successfully closed a strategic partnership investment and EUR160-million (US$184.6-million) joint venture (JV), TKE announced on August 4. The National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) plans to host a virtual "Know Before You Go" town hall on August 14 from 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. EST about the NAEC 2025 Convention & Exposition in Houston, Texas, on September 14-18. Participants will learn how to make the most of attending the event, featuring more than 200 vertical-transportation industry exhibitors and thousands of attendees. 50TH POP/JOE GOLF OUTING SET FOR SEPTEMBER 8
The 50th POP Frohlinger/JOE Marchese Memorial Invitational Outing, a popular golf event to benefit the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF), is planned rain or shine at the Brookville Country Club in Old Brookville, NY, on September 8. Due to overwhelming demand for the golf portion of the event, which has been sold out for the past 10 years, a double-shotgun start will be run: 7:30 a.m. for the morning session and 12:30 p.m. for the afternoon. CEA GOLF OUTING RAISES US$1,000 FOR EESF
The Chicago Elevator Association (CEA) held a golf outing on August 1 at Klein Creek Country Club in Winfield, Illinois, that included a 50/50 raffle and raised US$1,000 for the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF). EESF Executive Director Amber Catlin-Koldziej said it was a fun event with no overhead for the Foundation since the club is only a few hours away from her home. Schindler reports it has been awarded a contract to provide an unspecified number of vertical-transportation (VT) units for the first line of the new elevated railway system in Bogotá, Colombia. NIPPON OTIS MODERNIZES ELEVATOR AT MAJOR JAPAN DAM
Nippon Otis overcame challenging conditions to successfully modernize the elevator at Kurobe River Fourth Power Plant of Kurobe Dam, one of Japan's largest dams, Otis announced in July. The plant generates electricity by pulling water from Toyama Prefecture's Kurobe Dam deep in the mountains. The dam was completed in 1963 to supply the electricity to support Japan's post-war economic growth. Nippon Otis experts had to plan carefully to meet unique challenges on the elevator dam project. Fujitec, headquartered in Shiga, Japan, reported on August 7 it hosted a global health and safety conference for field personnel over four days to promote the company mantra, "Pursuing Safety and Reliability." Staff in charge of safety from Fujitec Hong Kong, Huasheng Fujitec in China, Fujitec Korea and Fujitec India toured each Fujitec facility, where they learned about safety through both classroom and hands-on training. ELEVATOR ACCESS COMING TO NYC'S TALLEST SUBWAY STATION
NY State Sen. Andrew Gounardes, Assembly Member Jo Anne Simion and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced on August 8 elevator access is coming to the tallest subway station in NYC: Brooklyn's Smith-9th Street Station, which is nearly 90 ft above ground level. Also among the tallest subway stations in the world, Smith-9th Street is one of 36 Americans with Disabilities Act station projects in progress that are part of the MTA 2025-2029 Capital Plan. This latest plan includes new elevator and accessibility upgrades for more than 60 subway stations in all. Assemblywoman Joan Millman pointed out Smith-9th is served by escalators, but they often break down. A local resident association president added that Smith-9th is the only nearly subway station for NYC Housing Authority residents in Red Hook. She said she and local residents are "grateful to Sen. Three new flyovers with escalator systems are being constructed to ease traffic congestion and to provide safe road crossing for pedestrians at East Fort in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, On Manorama reports. CALIFORNIA CITY TO BILL RESIDENTS FOR NON-LIFE-THREATENING LIFT ASSISTS
City of Redding, California, residents will receive a new bill if they've called 911 for lift assistance from the Redding Fire Department. The Redding City Council approved a First Responder Fee of US$489 in 2023, which is currently being applied to calls categorized as "lift assists" — non-life-threatening situations in which individuals need help getting up after a fall or similar incident. 90-YEAR-OLD WOMAN DIES AFTER FALLING ON ESCALATOR IN U.K.
A 90-year-old woman died from complications after falling on an escalator inside a busy shopping center in Swansea, Wales, U.K., the Express reported on August 6. The woman suffered lacerations to her right leg after stumbling on the moving escalator on January 21. The inquest was told there were no faults with the escalator or the surrounding environment.
