The deadline for submissions for ELEVATOR WORLD'S 28th Annual Project of the Year Awards has been extended. Get your submissions in before September 23 to be included. The contest focuses on projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology, as well as overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2026 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition.
OTIS TO PROVIDE 522 UNITS FOR MRT IN SINGAPORE
Otis announced on August 20 it has been selected by Singapore's Land Trasport Authority (LTA) to provide 522 transportation units — 336 heavy-duty escalators and moving walks, along with 186 elevators — to support Mass Rail Transport's (MRT) new Cross Island Line (CRL). The 50-km-long CRL will be Singapore's longest fully underground MRT line, expanding access across the country and including residential areas, business hubs and recreational spaces. CRL will be LTA's eighth MRT line and built in three phases, the first of which, a 29-km stretch known as CRL1, has begun construction with a targeted completion date of 2030. Lift Expo Nigeria 2025, organized by Expert International Fairs Org. ILLINOIS' COLLEY ELEVATOR: ELEVATOR CODE CHANGE IS COMING
Bensenville, Illinois-headquartered Colley Elevator Co. reminds customers in its August newsletter that the elevator safety code is changing for the state of Illinois (excluding the city of Chicago), with the biggest change on the horizon being door lock monitoring (DLM). When Illinois adopts A17.1-2022, the code as written will require DLM on elevators permitted for installation or modernization after January 1, 2026. It will require DLM on all elevators by January 1, 2029, with no provision for grandfathering in older equipment. The provincial government is investing in elevator modernization projects at two government-owned buildings, including the Court of King's Bench in Battleford in Saskatchewan, Canada, WestCentralOnline reports. Work will include upgrades to the existing elevator system, including new interior finishes along with updated mechanical and electrical components. The improvements are aimed at boosting safety, reliability, energy efficiency and performance, and officials note that the upgrades will also bring the system in line with current codes while reducing maintenance costs by replacing outdated equipment. 3PHASE MERGES WITH NEW ENGLAND'S SPECIALIZED ELEVATOR

With approximately 50 exhibitors already signed up, momentum is building for the next edition of The Elevator Show (TES) Dubai, planned on September 21-23 at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) for the second time. Cardinal Wilton Gregory, the archbishop emeritus of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., recently blessed an elevator at Nativity Parish in the capital city, the Catholic Standard reports. The elevator enables the elderly and the infirm to attend Mass at the parish, which this year celebrates its 125th anniversary. "At the Mass, prayers of thanksgiving to God were offered for the hands that built the elevator, the minds that conceived its design and the people who donated toward its construction," the source reports. VDA EXPANDS U.S. FOOTPRINT WITH TWO ACQUISITIONS
VDA, Inc., a vertical-transportation inspection and consulting firm based in Hanover, New Jersey, and serving clients throughout North America, on August 20 announced the acquisition of two firms: Central Elevator Inspections, with headquarters in Virginia and customers in West Virginia and Washington, D.C.; and Colorado's 1 Above Elevator Inspections. VDA Regional Vice President Sean Darby said Central has built a reputation for "delivering the level of quality and professionalism we expect across all our businesses." Holger Kirchhof is the new head of project management at Germany's "Die Aufzugsingenieure," a new company specializing in lift consulting for planning, operation, maintenance and training, LIFTJournal reports. His new role will be in expediting the expansion of the engineering company. As a graduate economist, he previously worked for various lift sector companies in leading positions. "In Holger Kirchhof we are not only obtaining technical know-how but also a colleague who lives our philosophy of customer proximity and quality with real conviction," said Peter Fischer, managing director of Die Aufzugsingenieure.
TENNESSEE AIRPORT WORKS TO MINIMIZE ESCALATOR WORK IMPACT
Staff at McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) in Blount County, Tennessee, just south of Knoxville, are working to minimize impact on passengers as KONE replaces the facility's two escalators over the next 16 weeks, The Daily Times reports. The "down" escalator is currently running and the "up" escalator is cordoned off behind screens as it undergoes replacement. Signage directs passengers to alternate routes. A 55-year-old man employed by an automotive factory in Osaka, Japan, died at work as a result of his head becoming stuck in an elevator door on August 21, Japan Today is among outlets to report. Police said a fellow employee at the factory in Suminoe Ward called the emergency number, but by the time paramedics arrived, the man had gone into cardiac arrest. He was transported to a hospital and confirmed dead approximately an hour later. Read more here

Renovations are underway at the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Austin Green Line Station to make the station fully accessible, the Austin Weekly News reports. These renovations include a new elevator, an escalator and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramp, plus reconstructed stairs and an extended platform. The Austin Green Line station opened in 1899, was rebuilt in 1962, and hasn't been updated since. Read more here

Innovalift AB announced on LinkedIn recently that Volker Hager has been appointed CEO of BS Tableau, its company based in Zülpich, Germany, that manufactures custom fixtures for elevator manufacturers. Founded by Rainer Bunk in 1995, BS Tableau also offers a broad range of electronic components to lift operators and OEMs, primarily for modernization projects. Hager has extensive experience in the vertical-transportation industry, previously holding management roles at Hydroware and TK Elevator. Developer Sterling Bay has put the only finished building in its stalled Lincoln Yards 53-acre mixed-use development between Lincoln Park and Bucktown in Chicago — an eight-story, 284,463-ft2 property at 1229 West Concord Place — up for sale, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat reports, citing Chicago Business. The Chicago developer previously surrendered more than half of the Lincoln Yards site to the lender, and it is now under contract to JDL Development and Kayne Anderson Real Estate for a residential development called Foundry Park.
