DEADLINE FOR PROJECT OF THE YEAR EXTENDED TO SEPTEMBER 23
The deadline for submissions for ELEVATOR WORLD'S 28th Annual Project of the Year Awards has been extended. Get your submissions in before September 23 to be included. The contest focuses on projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology, as well as overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2026 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition.

KONE LANDS MAJOR ELEVATOR ORDER FOR THREE-TOWER DUBAI PROJECT
KONE announced on September 1 it landed a major elevator order from developer Binghatti for Binghatti Skyrise, a 250-m-tall, three-tower residential development in Dubai's Business Bay scheduled for completion in March 2027. The order comprises next-generation high-rise technology and includes 44 MiniSpace® and two N MonoSpace® elevators with a maximum speed of 6 m/s. The elevators will serve more than 3,500 people daily and be supported by KONE 24/7 Connect, which uses AI to enable predictive maintenance, maximize uptime and ensure smooth transit. The Skyrise project builds on a longstanding partnership between KONE and Binghatti, which have collaborated on several landmark projects across Dubai. KONE Executive Vice President for Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa Samer Halabi observed the collaboration also supports its Rise strategy, which centers around using advanced technologies to optimize residential People Flow®.
 
GEE MILANO COMING UP IN NOVEMBER IN MILAN, ITALY
Organizers of the Global Elevator Exhibition (GEE) Milano, planned on November 19-21 at Fiera Milano in Milan, Italy, invite members of the vertical-transportation industry to join them for the global event, described as "the key event for the future of vertical mobility." Part of the Milan International Building Alliance (MIBA), GEE Milano is held concurrently with the MADE Expo (architecture and construction), the Smart Building Expo (technology) and SiCUREZZA (international security and fire). BARSS PROMOTED TO VP OF OPERATIONS AT FIELDBOSS
FIELDBOSS, the business management software provider headquartered in Toronto with offices in NYC and Florida, announced on August 29 it has promoted Corey Barss to vice president (VP) of operations. The company described the move as "pivotal as the field service software market accelerates, fueled by growing customer demand and increased private equity (PE) investment in both HVAC and elevator service companies." FIELDBOSS launched its new Client Solutions & Success (CSS) department earlier this year. Previously segmented across support, implementation and upgrades departments, these functions are now unified under a single umbrella — CSS — with dedicated teams. ANTICIPATION BUILDS FOR INTERLIFT 2025 IN NEW NUREMBERG LOCATION
Anticipation is building for interlift 2025, the leading vertical-transportation (VT) trade fair planned in Nuremberg, Germany (for the first time), at Messe Nurnberg on October 14-17, event organizer AFAG Messen reports. More than 500 exhibitors from 39 countries will be attending, with interlift occupying expanded space: 50,000 m2. AFAG Managing Directors Henning and Thilo Könicke said the physical expansion and "exciting developments in content" form ideal conditions for intensive knowledge exchange and new partnerships. VFA-interlift Chairman Achim Hütter said new products from the world of VT technology, from technological components to system solutions and digital applications, will be on display. Big names present at the fair, which also includes the VFA-Forum, include Fermator, Meiller, Montanari, Orona, Wittur and many more. Current industry trends to be explored include cybersecurity, energy efficiency, sustainability, digitalization and innovations in home lifts. Interlift also plans to host its first presentation on automated logistics for vertically distributed production environments.

CECA ANNOUNCES UPCOMING EVENTS
The Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) announces upcoming events, which can also be found on its online calendar. On September 9, the Prairie Region meeting and cocktail social is planned at 4 p.m. MT (6 p.m. EST) at Sheraton Suites Calgary. RSVP to attend the meeting here, and be sure to select the social ticket if you plan to attend that, which follows the regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. The Prairie Region meeting will include a presentation by FIELDBOSS on the impact of AI on running a business. TKE ALMOAYYED CELEBRATES 15 YEARS IN BAHRAIN
TK Elevator (TKE) Almoayyed is celebrating 15 years in Bahrain this year, stating on LinkedIn that its Kingdom of Bahrain team "remains committed to improving the quality of urban life in Bahrain through our passion for moving people." Established in 2010 and headquartered in Manama, Bahrain, TKE Almoayyed installs, services and modernizes elevators, escalators and moving walks throughout the island country in the Persian Gulf. Notable projects include Salmaniya Hospital, where it commissioned two, 1600-kg capacity hydraulic lifts connecting to the helipad, one freight lift and one passenger lift; the National Bank of Bahrain in Manama, where it commissioned three passenger lifts after conducting a traffic study; and the Batelco Building in Manama's Diplomatic Area, where it commissioned three passenger lifts.
KONE CONTRACT WITH UNITED ELEVATORS TO EXPAND EGYPT REACH
KONE announced on August 28 it signed a strategic contract with Egypt's United Elevators, making the company KONE's first Egypt channel partner. The two companies have agreed to collaborate to deliver innovative and sustainable vertical-transportation (VT) solutions for both new installation and modernization projects, "supporting Egypt's urban transformation and ensuring smoother, safer journeys in homes, workplaces and public spaces." FREE TOURS OF EIFFEL TOWER'S ELEVATOR SYSTEM PART OF EVENT
On September 20-21, free tours will be offered of the historic East Pillar elevator at Paris' Eiffel Tower, part of European Heritage Days, PARIS SECRET is among outlets to report. Each year, European Heritage Days, a participatory cultural event organized by the Council of Europe and the European Union, opens doors to places that are usually inaccessible. The machinery of the Eiffel Tower's historic elevator, organizers observe, represents a "rare opportunity to go behind the scenes of one of the world's most visited monuments." Read more here

BIDS SOUGHT FOR UPGRADING CHENNAI FOB'S NON-FUNCTIONING VT
The State Highways Department in Chennai, India, is inviting bids for replacing non-functioning vertical transportation (VT) equipment — escalators — and adding elevators to both sides of the foot over bridges (FOBs) near the Madras Export Processing Zone MEPZ), DT Next reports. A department official said a ramp on the MEPZ side of the FOB will be dismantled and replaced by a lift. Read more here

INDIA BIS INITIATIVE A MAJOR STEP FORWARD FOR ELEVATOR SAFETY
An initiative mandated under revised Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms requiring lift manufacturers to incorporate systems that ensure elevator cars remain securely locked until the doors are completely closed represents "a decisive step toward reducing accidents and raising the safety profile of the country's vertical-transport sector," Urban Acres is among outlets to report. Besides door-locking systems, the new standards call for the integration of speed governors and ascending car overspeed protection systems to stop cars in the event of control failure. Also in store: light curtains, two-way emergency communication systems and stricter protocols for fire safety and evacuation. Officials said the new code will require all manufacturers to comply by December, bringing much-needed consistency to a country where some states lack comprehensive lift laws.

INDIA RECOMMENDS ANTI-DUMPING DUTY ON CHINESE ELEVATOR PARTS
India's Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has recommended imposing an anti-dumping duty for five years on T-shaped elevator guide rails and counterweight guide rails imported from China, Rediff is among outlets to report. The commerce ministry's investigative arm found the parts have been exported to India "at a price below the normal value, resulting in dumping." DGTR recommended a duty of between 24.11% and 51.87%, but the finance industry will have the final say. The duty is aimed at creating a level playing field for domestic manufacturers under the regime of the World Trade Organization. India has already imposed duties on several products to counter cheap imports from countries including China.

TORONTO'S CANTECH ELEVATORS ACQUIRED BY KONE
After 22 years of steady growth and consistent improvement, Toronto-based Cantech Elevators has been acquired by KONE, announced Lift Business Advisors, which acted as M&A advisor to Cantech in negotiations leading to the successful completion of the deal, finalized in August. Cantech was founded by Kevin Chan in 2003 as a "customer-first, detail-driven" elevator service provider. Read more here

MOU PAVES WAY FOR OTIS MRL ELEVATORS AT COLOMBO PROJECTS
Colombo, Sri Lanka-headquartered Aitken Spence Elevators Pvt. Ltd. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rush Housing Ltd. to provide nine Otis Gen2® machine-room-less (MRL) elevators for five residential developments in the Colombo area, The Daily Mirror reports. Aitken Spence is a joint venture (JV) of Aitken Spence PLC and Otis Elevator Co. formed in 1989 to be Sri Lanka's exclusive Otis distributor. Read more here

1970s BURNABY OFFICE STRUCTURE PARTIALLY DEMOLISHED TO MAKE WAY FOR TOWERS
Partial demolition is underway at "The Boot," an iconic 21-story office building built in 1976 for BC Tel at the intersection of Boundary Road and Kingsway on the Burnaby side of the Vancouver-Burnaby border in British Columbia, Canada, Daily Hive reports. What's going away is a 10-story parking podium fronting Boundary Road — the structure that formed the arch of the building's boot-like appearance from Burnaby Road. Read more here

CTBUH GLOBAL WALKING TOUR TO KICK OFF IN NYC
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) will kick off its 12th annual Global Walking Tour, From the Ground Up, on September 4 in NYC's West Village. Hosted by the NYC chapter of CTBUH, the tour starts at 4 p.m. and will include some of Manhattan's most distinctive projects: Little Island, a new public park on an artificial island; 837 Washington, which repurposes a 1930s structure into unique office space; 160 Leroy, a curving tower housing luxury condominiums; 80 Clarkson, a two-tower structure along the Hudson River that will have a Schindler elevator system; 100 Vandam, a new, sustainable residential project; 7 Hudson Square, Disney's new 22-story headquarters; 565 Broome, a 30-story luxury condominium tower; and 10 Sullivan, a triangular, 160-story residential building. Since 2014, CTBUH says its Global Walking Tour has "brought together urban enthusiasts worldwide to experience cities through the lends of architecture, tall buildings and urban design." There are 11 cities participating in the 2025 edition of the tour.

DUBAI DEVELOPER ANNOUNCES FIRST COMMERCIAL PROJECT
Ellington Properties, a leading Dubai developer, has announced its first-ever office project: Eaton Square, a 21-story (including several lower levels) "next-generation" building close to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road in Mohammed Bin Rashid (MBR) City, Zawya reports. The Dubai Chamber of Commerce saw its highest-ever annual membership increase — 4.5% year-on-year — in 2024. Read more here

58-YEAR-OLD MAN DIES IN KOSOVO ELEVATOR MISHAP
A 58-year-old man died in Ferizaj, Kosovo, on August 27 as a result of trying to release his wife from an elevator that had stalled during a power outage, Express reports. The man was found deceased with serious bodily injuries near the elevator in the basement. Investigators said the man fell from the third or fourth floor while trying to open the elevator door. It is unclear whether he fell down the shaft. The incident remains under investigation.

KONE LAUNCHES MAJOR INVESTMENT INITIATIVE IN SOUTHERN CHINA
KONE signed an agreement with the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone of Shenzhen, China, in late August, formalizing plans to set up its southern China headquarters (HQ) in Qianhai, as well as an R&D center and a logistics hub, the South China Morning Post is among outlets to report. The HQ is set to start operations early in 2026, and the logistics hub had been expected to be operational in October 2025. KONE Executive Vice President (EVP) Joe Bao observed that China is KONE's largest single market, with 1.6 million elevators and escalators delivered since starting operations on the mainland in 1996. Through the partnership with the Cooperation Zone, KONE aims to "optimize resource allocation, accelerate industrial transformation and support urban renewal across the Greater Bay Area," Bao said.
