The deadline for submissions for ELEVATOR WORLD'S 28th Annual Project of the Year Awards has been extended. Get your submissions in before September 23 to be included. Lift Expo Italia 2026, the third iteration of the international trade fair organized by ANICA (Italian elevator components association) at the Alliaz MiCo — Milan Convention Center — in Milan, Italy, on October 28-30, 2026, is shaping up to be the biggest yet, with an expanded physical area and additional exhibitors. In 2026, the event will host more than 180 exhibitors in an exhibition area expanded to 16,500 m2. As in years past, tens of thousands of visitors are expected to attend the show, which boasts free entry. Held in 2022, the first Lift Expo Italia spanned 7,000 m2 with 100 exhibitors and 15,013 visitors representing 54 countries. G-Tech Elevators tells ELEVATOR WORLD it provided a six-elevator system for 1440 Amsterdam Avenue, a new 28-story residential building in Harlem, Manhattan, designed by Gluck+ and developed by Grid Group and Artimus. The system includes four overhead traction elevators that travel at 500 ft/min and have capacities ranging from 2500 lb to 3500 lb. There are also two hydraulic elevators: a 2000-lb capacity dual-jack roped unit that travels at 150 ft/min and a 6000-lb capacity twin-jack, two-stage holeless unit that travels at 125 ft min. Miami International Airport (MIA) announced on September 3 it reopened its newest pair of modernized moving walks in Concourse D, marking the 23rd moving walk, elevator or escalator modernization so far this year. The work is part of the airport's US$9-billion Modernization In Action project, the vertical-transportation (VT) portion of which is being handled by Schindler, which was awarded a 372-unit, five-year contract in 2023. Fifteen additional conveyance units are on track for completion by the end of 2025, putting MIA on track for 38 new or improved pieces of VT equipment this year and setting a new annual modernization record. MIA replaced or modernized 32 conveyance units in 2023 and 2024 combined, and is on pace to more than double its completion rate in 2025. Indian Railways (IR) is working to redevelop the Jaipur railway station in the North Western Railway zone. The project is being executed in phases under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. NONFUNCTIONAL ELEVATORS IMPEDE RESPONDERS IN FATAL NYC FIRE
More than 100 fire and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel responded to a September 3 fire at a 20-story building on East 122nd Street in East Harlem, NY, but one elevator being out of order and the other failing to work properly forced them to lug heavy equipment up the stairs, NBC New York is among outlets to report. A 72-year-old female resident who lived on the 19th floor was seriously injured and pronounced dead after being rescued by firefighters and transported by EMS to a hospital.
