Vertical-transportation (VT) consultancy VDA, Inc., headquartered in East Hanover, New Jersey, announced on November 11 that Elevator Consulting Services, Inc., (ECS), based in Seattle with offices in Portland, Oregon, and Honolulu, Hawaii, has joined the VDA family of companies. NEII PROVIDES CODE DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) provided a code development update. On the ASME A17/CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, the A17 Standards Committee met in October and finalized several editorial changes to the 2025 edition. A second draft for public review is expected soon. Work is now focused on the 2028 edition. The A117 Committee continues to meet virtually every two weeks to review proposed revisions to the ICC A117.1 Standard for Accessible Buildings and Facilities. Read more here

ELEVATOR ESCALATOR SAFETY WEEK THIS WEEK
National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) and the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF) ask vertical-transportation (VT) industry members to remember that Elevator Escalator Safety Week is this week. IN MEMORIAM: GELESTINO'S NAMESAKE FATHER
Donald Gelestino, father of Champion Elevator Corp. President Donald Gelestino, passed away on November 1 at home surrounding by loved ones after a period of declining health. A native of New York who dedicated many years to the Rescue Company of the Oceanside Fire Department, Gelestino proudly served in the U.S. Army. After his service, he worked as a paramedic for the Nassau County Police Department in Mineola, NY. After retiring and moving to Maine, Gelestino worked for the Dover, New Hampshire, Police Department and Dover District Court. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Gelestino loved traveling across the country and going on cruises with his wife of 55 years, Marilyn, and spending time with his beloved family. He greatly enjoyed camping, boating and fishing. Survivors include wife, Marilyn; son, Donald; daughter-in-law, Nadine; daughters Lisa, Sandi, Debbie and Patty; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the York Ambulance Association, who "go above and beyond, for which we should be forever grateful."
 
DYNASTY ELEVATOR PRESIDENT MEZZO JOINS NYBMA BOD
The New York Building Managers' Association (NYBMA) announced Dynasty Elevator President John Mezzo has accepted a nomination to join the association's Board of Directors (BoD). As one of New York City's largest and oldest residential property manager/superintendent organizations, NYBMA was founded in 1917. Read more here

INTERLIFT 2025 PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY FOR NÜREMBERG EVENT
Preparations are already well underway for interlift 2025, planned on October 14-17, 2025, at Messe Nürnberg in Nuremberg, Germany, organizer AFAG Messen und Austellungen GmbH announced. There are already approximately 300 exhibitors from more than 20 countries registered for the event, the world's leading trade fair for the elevator industry. Read more here
 
GUPTA STEPS AWAY FROM ARKEL INDIA MD ROLE
Arkel Electronic India Pvt. Ltd., a leading company in the elevator control systems and components industry, has announced the departure of Anurag Gupta, who has stepped down from the role of managing director (MD), BigNewsNetwork.com was among outlets to report. Gupta leaves after six years of association. Gupta and Arkel Elektrik Elektronik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S. founded Arkel India as a joint venture in 2018 and have since overseen significant milestones, making the company one of the strongest players in the India elevator control systems and components market. Under Gupta's leadership, Arkel India advanced its mission with the establishment of a state-of-the-art production facility, which is expected to become operational in early 2025. In July 2024, Swedish group Innovalift signed an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in Arkel Türkiye to expand its geographic reach and complement its product portfolio of components for elevators.

NEW YORK BUILD TO INCLUDE ELEVATOR COMPANIES AND SUPPLIERS
New York Build 2025 Expo, the largest construction and design show for NYC, is set to include numerous elevator companies and suppliers. The show, planned on March 12-13, 2025, at the Javits Center in Hell's Kitchen, invites attendees to network and do business with more than 40,000 senior-level decision-makers from the AEC (Architectural, Engineering and Construction) and real estate industries. TKE KOREA AGAIN NAMED TO TOP OF KOREA QUALITY INDEX
TK Elevator (TKE) Korea has been named to the "2024 Korea Quality Satisfaction Index (KS-QEI)" and has been ranked No. 1 in the elevator category for three consecutive years, Maeil Business Newspaper reports. TKE entered the Korean market in 2003 as one of the world's four largest elevator companies; it now ranks second in the domestic elevator market as of the end of 2023. Read more here

MID-AMERICAN PROVIDES TWO ADA ELEVATORS FOR MANHATTAN MTA STATION
The NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) tells ELEVATOR WORLD that Mid-American Elevator provided two new elevators for the 14th Street 123 subway station in Manhattan, NYC. Unveiled on November 3, the accessibility upgrades are part of a larger 14th Street Complex Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) megaproject that includes US$247 million in federal funding and will ultimately add nine elevators. HYUNDAI ELEVATOR OFFERS FREE INSPECTIONS FOR 10-PLUS-YEAR-OLD ELEVATORS IN KOREA
Hyundai Elevator recently announced it will provide free services to elevators more than 10 years old installed in Korea regardless of manufacturer, Maeil Business Newspaper reports. Hyundai Elevator will mobilize high-tech inspection equipment such as thermal imaging cameras, vibration meters, noise meters and rope meters for this free inspection. This campaign was designed to prevent accidents in winter and establish a safe elevator operation culture. According to the Korea Elevator Safety Authority, out of 867,719 lifts installed in Korea as of September, 269,874 lifts were older than 15 years, accounting for 31.4% of the total. With the revision of the Elevator Safety Management Act in 2019, old elevators more than 15 years old are subject to precision safety diagnosis every three years, but elevator safety accidents are still occurring.

HONG KONG MTR REPORTS 430 ESCALATOR INCIDENTS IN NINE MONTHS
Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway (MTR) reported 430 escalator incidents for the first nine months of 2024, representing a 20% decrease compared to the same period in 2023, Dimsum Daily reports. Incidents primarily stemmed from passengers walking on escalators, carrying large items or being bumped by others. Read more here
 
INDIAN STATE ROLLS OUT LIFT REGISTRATION PORTAL
The state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) in north central India has launched a lift registration portal that aims to simplify the process of registering lifts and escalators to ensure they meet state government requirements, including mandatory inspections and proof of maintenance, the Hindustan Times is among outlets to report. SEATTLE'S SOUND TRANSIT TO INSTALL 58 NEW VT UNITS
Sound Transit in Seattle plans to replace 58 aging vertical-transportation (VT) units with new elevators and escalators, KING 5 is among outlets to report. Upgrades target four downtown stations: the Chinatown-International District, Pioneer Square, West and Symphony stations. The VT units at these stations are more than 35 years old — "well past their retirement age," the source observed. Read more here

CANADIAN REGION FACING NUMEROUS OUTDATED ELEVATOR INSPECTIONS
In Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, there are more than 500 outstanding elevator inspections that Service N.L. needs to complete, according to an access to information request filed by the Progressive Conservative Party, the CBC reports. As of October 21, the locations of these elevators include shopping centers like the Avalon Mall in St. John's and the Valley Mall in Corner Brook and health-care facilities such as hospitals, long-term care homes and senior living complexes along with hotels, airports and businesses, according to the source. Service N.L. critic Loyola O'Driscoll probed Service N.L. Minister Elvis Loveless at a recent House of Assembly, asking him how many elevators across the province have an expired inspection certificate. Loveless didn't know the answer, but said he would report back to the House when he found out. O'Driscoll said a total of 24 elevators require inspections at the Confederation Building alone.  Loveless responded to say his department will discuss the issues O'Driscoll raised.

INDIA APARTMENT BUILDING FATALITY REPORTED
A security guard died after falling down the elevator shaft from the fourth floor of an apartment building in Tambaram, Tamil Nadu, India, on November 10, DT NEXT reports. The victim was visiting all the floors in the building and turning on the corridor lights. Read more here
 
ANOTHER HIGH RISE GREENLIT IN JERSEY CITY'S GROWING DOWNTOWN
Construction of a 30-story, 320-ft-tall high rise with 300 residential units in the Liberty Harbor area of downtown Jersey City, New Jersey, has been greenlit by the Jersey City Planning Board, Jersey Digs reports. Alternately referred to as 20 South Cove Avenue and 155 Marin Boulevard, the empty plot of land in 2014 was transferred by the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA) to an entity that planned to build a hotel.
