SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 28th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology, as well as overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2026 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The submission deadline is September 2.

FIRST KONE ACADEMY OPENS IN THE PHILIPPINES
KONE has officially opened its first KONE Academy in the Philippines, the Manila Bulletin reports. The state-of-the-art facility in Mandaluyong City currently trains 620 vertical-transportation professionals annually, with plans to expand its capacity to 800 by 2027. By 2030, KONE aims to certify 4,400 professionals. Trainees receive hands-on instruction in installation, commissioning, maintenance and modernization. Read more here
 
OTIS 2Q EARNINGS REFLECT STRENGTH AND CHALLENGES
Otis' Second Quarter (2Q) earnings reflect strengths, including a robust and growing service business, and challenges, such as a weak new installation market, particularly in China. The company's earnings per share (EPS) exceeded expectations, with EPS of US$1.05 compared to the forecasted US$1.03, but revenue missed the anticipated US$3.7 billion forecast, coming in at US$3.6 billion. Otis' service business continued to drive growth, contributing 90% of its operating profit. Read more here

TKE INDIA EXPANDS FOOTPRINT IN NORTHERN INDIA WITH NEW OFFICE
TK Elevator (TKE) India announced the opening of a new office in Varanasi on July 22, marking a significant milestone in its expansion across northern India. Reinforcing its strong nationwide presence, the Varanasi office joins TKE India's network of four regional offices, 21 branches and 84 service centers across India. Read more here
 
NAESA INTERNATIONAL HOSTING EVENTS IN PUERTO RICO IN AUGUST
NAESA International is hosting two upcoming events in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The first is the Elevator Code Association (ECA) 101 course on August 20. This course is designed to deliver a basic familiarization with codes, guides and reference material pertaining to people and material lifting devices. The 101 class will not provide in-depth knowledge of codes and guides or precisely how to navigate them; instead, its intended purpose is to familiarize individuals with elevator codes. This class is geared toward those who are new to vertical-transportation codes. The second event is the Code Compliance Seminar on August 21, which will focus on the information and changes on the latest editions of the following codebooks: 2020 Elevator Industry Field Employees' Safety Handbook; QEI-1 2024 Standard for the Qualification of Elevator Inspectors; "How to Use" A17.2 Guide for Inspectors of Elevators, Escalators and Moving Walks; ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators-Section 8.11.2 Periodic Inspection 8.11.2 for Electric Elevators; NFPA 13 & 72-; and the International Building Code (IBC) – 2018. MESA BOAT CRUISE A GREAT SUCCESS ON BOSTON HARBOR
Scenic Boston Harbor was the ideal backdrop for Massachusetts Elevator Safety Association's (MESA) annual Boat Cruise on July 16. Setting sail at 4 p.m., the sold-out event featured incredible views under sunny skies, a laid-back atmosphere and quality networking. The Cruise Committee of Event Chair Sue Barreda of Atlantic Elevator and MESA committee member Carlos Escobar of Hyperion Solutions did a tremendous job organizing the cruise, with nearly 50 people attending. PRYSMIAN WELCOMES NEW DISTRIBUTION WAREHOUSE IN CANADA
Prysmian announced on July 23 it opened a new 25,000-ft2 distribution warehouse just steps from its Prysmian Draka EHC escalator manufacturing plant in Oshawa, Canada. Richard Parvesse, senior vice president of Draka EHC, Prysmian's elevator and escalator business unit, said the facility is a great addition to its Canadian footprint and gives employees an upgraded and modern workplace. OTIS STRENGTHENS BOND WITH DUBAI LUXURY REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER
Otis continues to strengthen and grow its relationship with DAMAC Properties, a leading luxury real estate developer based in Dubai, Otis President and CEO Judy Marks said during a July 23 earnings call. Its latest agreement with DAMAC includes the supply and installation of 20 SkyRise® elevators at DAMAC Bay 2 in Dubai Harbor. INNOCORE PRO COMPLETES MANHATTAN JOB, ANNOUNCES MOVE
Innocore Pro Elevator, Inc. tells ELEVATOR WORLD it recently completed a job on the west side of Midtown Manhattan, NY, near Hudson Yards and also moved. The recently completed job is for 439 West 36th Street, a 12-story residential building designed by Archimaera Architecture and developed by ZD Jasper Realty. In July, the building stood topped out ahead of anticipated completion in 2026, New York YIMBY reported. Read more here

FOUNDATION STONE LAID FOR NEW ELEVATOR IN MANIPUR, INDIA
Member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Khumukcham Joykishan laid the foundation stone for a new elevator facility at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal, Manipur, India, on July 18, The Imphal Times reported. Joykishan informed the public that the long-awaited addition, aimed at improving accessibility for journalists and visitors, will be a G4 model elevator. Read more here
 
KEY CITY THEATRE IN BC BEGINS ELEVATOR INSTALLATION
Construction has begun on an elevator installation at Key City Theatre in Cranbrook, British Columbia (BC), Canada, 102.9 Rewind Radio reports. The theater announced this week that work has begun on its elevator installation, which will increase accessibility of all of the theater's levels. The installation was made possible through a combination of community fundraising and government investment. Read more here
12 NEW MTA STATIONS TO RECEIVE ELEVATORS AND MORE
As part of Disability Pride Month, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced on July 22 an additional 12 stations across four NYC boroughs that will receive elevators and other accessibility upgrades as part of the 2025-2019 Capital Plan. In Brooklyn, that includes five stations (two in Crown Heights); in the Bronx, three; and two each in Manhattan and Queens. In all, the plan calls for at least 60 more stations to be made Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant, ensuring that nearly 70% of all NYC subway rides will take place to or from an accessible station. The MTA also announced the launch of a revamped Elevator and Escalator Status Tool, making it easier for riders to check the status of any elevator or escalator. Improvements were made to the interface, navigation and search functionality. MTA is also using funds from congestion pricing to invest in ADA upgrades at 23 stations, including new elevators and reconstructed platforms.

PRAGUE PUBLIC TRANSPORT FINISHES LIFT INSTALLATION
Prague Public Transport finished installing a new elevator at the Radlická metro station in Prague, Czech Republic, which was made accessible on July 23, Prague Daily News reports. After approximately 10 months of construction, the new elevator installation has been completed, making Radlická the 48th station to become barrier-free in the Prague metro network. Read more here

TÜV SÜD TO CONSOLIDATE TWO DIVISIONS
TÜV SÜD, one of the world's leading testing, inspection and certification providers with global headquarters in Munich, Germany, announced on July 23 it is consolidating its Industry Service and Real Estate & Infrastructure divisions into the new Industry & Infrastructure division. EMERGENCY TOILETS INSTALLED IN SOME JAPAN ELEVATORS DUE TO EARTHQUAKES
Japan has taken a step toward earthquake preparedness by installing emergency toilets in some elevators for individuals who may become stranded during seismic events that lead to power outages and elevator malfunctions, Dimsum Daily reports. These specialized toilets are integrated into seats and equipped with essential supplies such as water, toilet paper, deodorant and emergency lighting. Read more here

THREE WORKERS DIE WHEN FREIGHT ELEVATOR COLLAPSED IN ITALY
Three workers died when a freight elevator collapsed in the Vomero neighborhood of Naples, Italy, on July 25, Agenzia Nova reports. According to initial reports, the workers were operating the elevator on the sixth floor during renovation work on the building when the lifting system suddenly failed. The collapse caused a vertical fall that killed the three workers on impact. Labor inspectors and authorities are investigating the cause of the failure.
 
ELEVATOR SAFETY REGULATIONS OUT FOR REVIEW IN SOUTHWESTERN CHINA
A draft of the Sichuan Province Elevator Safety Regulations was submitted for review on July 28 at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress in the southwestern Chinese province, Futu News reports. The regulations propose that carrying bicycles and electric motorcycles — as well as their batteries — be prohibited in elevators. They also propose that dogs only be allowed on elevators if proper safety measures (a tight leash, a muzzle or a pet carrier) are implemented. Sichuan Province also aims to improve its elevator emergency response service platform by establishing a dedicated assistance phone number that would direct local response departments to immediately carry out a rescue after receiving a call for assistance.

OTIS TO MODERNIZE ELEVATORS AT INDIANAPOLIS OFFICE TOWER
Otis President and CEO Judy Marks said on an earnings call on July 23 that the company will modernize 21 elevators at the OneAmerica Tower in Indianapolis, Indiana, expanding its long-term relationship with the customer. Otis provided the original elevators when the tower opened in 1982, modernized them in 2009 and is the current maintenance provider. Read more here
 
MAN DIES AFTER FALLING THROUGH SHAFT OF FAULTY ELEVATOR IN INDIA
A man died after he accidentally fell into the shaft of a faulty elevator at an apartment complex on Ayodhya Road in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, on July 24, the Hindustan Times reports. The 54-year-old man was staying on the fifth floor of the Sai Yash Residences in Unnao Kalan with his daughter for medical treatment, police said. According to police, after the man pressed the lift button to go to the terrace at approximately 5:30 p.m., the doors opened, but the elevator had not arrived on the floor yet. The man stepped in and plunged down the shaft, falling several floors to his death. Police said the body was recovered from the base of the shaft and sent for a post-mortem.
