HYUNDAI ELEVATOR CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY
Hyundai Elevator, South Korea's largest elevator manufacturer, celebrated its 40th anniversary on May 22, The Korea Herald reports. The event was attended by more than 600 executives and employees, including Hyundai Elevator CEO and Chairwoman Cho Jae-cheon. Read more here

CECA TO HOST MONTREAL STUDENT MEET AND GREET
The Canadian Elevator Contractor's Association (CECA) will host a student meet and greet at the Auberge Royal Versailles in Montreal on May 30 from 5-7 p.m. Employers, elevator mechanic students at the École des Métiers du Sud-Ouest de Montréal (EMSOM) and union representatives will be present. The goal of the event is to allow attendees to introduce themselves and exchange views on the field of elevator mechanics. EMSOM students will have the opportunity to network with entrepreneurs, who may hire them as summer apprentice mechanics. Online RSVP is requested. 
 
ELC OFFERS CERTIFICATION SUPPORT FOR NYC DOB SST CARDS
The Elevator Learning Center (ELC), headquartered in Long Island City, NY, is offering training and certification support for anyone affected by revocation of Site Safety Training (SST) card provider Valor Consulting. All SST cards and certificates issued by Valor were invalidated by the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) in April when senior Valor executives and employees were accused of selling SST identification cards to workers without providing any of the required safety training. ELA RENEWS BOARD MEMBERS DURING ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN ISTANBUL
The European Lift Association (ELA) renewed all board members during its General Assembly at the Annual Conference in Istanbul, Türkiye, on May 16-17. With the theme of "sustainability," the conference was, as usual, well-attended by international players and featured outstanding speakers — representatives of European institutions, university lecturers and lift industry experts. MESA MEETING PACKS THE HOUSE FOR LIVELY ROUNDTABLE
More than 40 attendees packed Jake n Joes Sports Grille in Norwood, Massachusetts, on May 14 for the monthly meeting of the Massachusetts Elevator Safety Association (MESA). HYUNDAI ELEVATOR DEVELOPING VERTIPORT FOR UAM
Hyundai Elevator has announced it will start developing "Vertiport," one of its key projects for the commercialization of urban air traffic (UAM), BusinessKorea reports. Vertiport is a takeoff and landing site that will be the hub of UAM aircraft. Vertiports are limited to urban environments, and Hyundai Elevator has addressed this by proposing a vertical, enclosed Vertiport. Read more here

WITTUR INDIA ACHIEVES LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATION UNDER OTIS Q+ PROGRAM
Wittur India shared via a LinkedIn post that it has achieved Level 3 certification under the Otis Quality Plus (Q+) Program. This significant milestone was the result of a comprehensive audit conducted by Otis India's Supplier Quality Engineer Mariraj Jayamari and Otis Head of Quality Jagadishkumar Munirathna Setty. The audit focused on evaluating Wittur India's adherence to and compliance with the rigorous standards set forth by the Q+ Program. They not only met, but exceeded, those standards, earning the Level 3 Supplier certification. The Level 3 Q+ Compliance signifies that Wittur India operates as a quality-driven organization with well-controlled processes and a steadfast commitment to excellence.
 
SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 27th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology and overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2025 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The submission deadline is September 30.

CANADIAN SENIORS SOCIETY CELEBRATES NEW ELEVATOR
The Surrey-Delta Indo Canadian Seniors Society recently celebrated the installment of a new elevator funded by the provincial government, the Indo-Canadian Voice reports. The elevator was inoperable for close to two years, meaning seniors had to climb the stairs to the second floor where many social activities for the 600 members of the society are offered. 36 NEW VT UNITS PART OF US$700-MILLION BEAVER STADIUM RENOVATION IN PENNSYLVANIA
Thirty-six new vertical-transportation (VT) units — 24 elevators and 12 escalators — are part of a US$700-million renovation of Penn State University's Beaver Stadium in State College, Pennsylvania, according to the Penn State Board of Trustees. WNEP is among outlets to report that the board had approved the entire three-year, multimillion-dollar project on May 21. Read more here

IZMIR, TÃœRKIYE, ESTABLISHES VT MAINTENANCE/REPAIR TEAM
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in Türkiye has established a special 38-person team to maintain and repair 170 vertical-transportation (VT) units — 57 elevators and 113 escalators — on 127 overpasses throughout the city, Railly News reports. Izmir Mayor Cemil Tugay formed the team under the coordination of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Construction Affairs Department. Affiliated with and certified by Ä°ZELMAN A.Åž., the personnel will provide service in seven shifts on a 24/7 basis. A department official said elevators and escalators on overpasses are currently 92% functional, adding that vandalism and theft are the main causes of service disruption. "With the team we've established, we can intervene in malfunctions instantly and solve problems in a short time," he said.

INDIA'S NF RAILWAY SANCTIONS 120 VT UNITS UNDER AMRIT BHARAT STATION SCHEME
India's Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway has sanctioned the installation of 120 vertical-transportation (VT) units — 94 lifts at 46 stations and 26 escalators at 13 stations — under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, an ongoing Indian Railways mission launched in February 2023 by the Ministry of Railways to redevelop 1,275 stations nationwide, Northeast Today reports. NOBLE VT SYSTEM FOR NEW LIC, NY, RESIDENTIAL TOWER
Bohemia, NY-headquartered Noble Elevator Vice President Thomas Dutton tells ELEVATOR WORLD Noble provided a five-unit elevator system for 25-01 Queens Plaza North, a new 28-story residential tower in Long Island City (LIC), Queens, NY. The system consists of four high-rise traction units — three overheads with Hollister-Whitney (HW) GL185 machines and one machine-room-less unit with a HW GL170 machine, all paired with Smartrise C4 controllers. The contract also included a hydraulic elevator for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority stair connection to the subway provided by Canton Elevator. All cabs are by Canton Architectural Products, with entrances by Columbia Elevator and fixtures by Monitor Elevator Products. Slated for completion in the first half of 2025, 25-01 Queens Plaza North was designed by Handel Architects for developer Grubb Properties, New York YIMBY reported. It is 311-ft tall with 417 apartments, as well as 7,000 ft2 of commercial space.

PLANNED TORONTO SUPERTALLS SPUR CONCERNS ABOUT ELEVATOR WAIT TIMES
Buildings taller than 300 m, also known as supertalls, are set to multiply in Toronto, and some observers are concerned they will be under-elevatored, since neither the province of Ontario nor the city of Toronto specify a minimum number of elevators for such towers, CBC reports. The latest proposal for a 317-m, 99-story supertall on Bloor Street West includes eight elevators, or approximately one elevator for every 161 residential units. Read more here

CTBUH UK FUTURE LEADERS TO HOST TOUR OF TIMBER LANDMARK
On June 12, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) U.K. Future Leaders Committee plans to host a free tour of London's Mossbourne Community Academy, which, at the time of construction in 2004, was the largest glulam structure in the U.K. Glulam is a stress-rated, engineered wood beam composed of wood laminations, or "lams" bonded together with durable, moisture-resistant adhesives. ARCHITECT'S CHEONGDOAM TOWER DESIGN CHOSEN IN COMPETITION
J. Mayer H. Architects has won the Seoul City Urban/Architecture Creation/Innovation Design Project contest for its "Cheongdoam Tower" design in Seoul, South Korea, Arch Daily reports. The design was chosen from numerous submissions and six shortlisted projects. The tower features winding paths through open green spaces with water features. Read more here

CTBUH ANNOUNCES 2024 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE WINNERS
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) recently announced its 2024 Award of Excellence winners, more than 100 of the most exemplary projects in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry and adjacent disciplines. Projects from across the globe were recognized in more than 20 categories and subcategories, including Best Tall Building, Innovation, Urban Habitat, Repositioning and Equity, Diversity & Inclusion. Award of Excellence winners now move on to the next stage of judging: Project teams present their submissions to attendees and live juries at the CTBUH 2024 International Conference, September 23–27, in London and Paris, after which overall winners for each category will be selected and announced at an award ceremony and dinner.
