OTIS CFO ROLE TO TRANSITION FROM MAHESHWARI TO MÉNDEZ
Otis Worldwide Corp. announced on July 19 that the executive vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) role will transition from Anurag Maheshwari — who is pursuing a role outside of Otis — to Christin Méndez, effective August 23. Méndez will report directly to Otis Chair, CEO and President Judy Marks, who observed that Méndez has deep financial management expertise leading transformation within and outside Otis. "She understands our long-term strategy and service-driven business model and how to drive growth and shareholder value," Marks said. Méndez successfully led Otis finance teams through change and positive results in Otis' diverse Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, accounting for more than half of Otis' global service portfolio. She comes to her new position from serving as senior vice president, finance, EMEA and Transformation, with a strong focus on financial planning and analysis and mergers and acquisitions. Before joining Otis in 2022, Méndez served as a senior finance executive in the telecommunications industry for more than 15 years.

CHAMPION ELEVATOR SELECTED FOR ELEVATOR MODERNIZATION AT THE PLAZA
Champion Elevator announced it has been selected by the ownership of The Plaza, a landmark luxury hotel that opened in Midtown Manhattan in 1907, to modernize its five passenger elevators. On a 15-week accelerated schedule, the job involves a "very complex machine replacement that requires specialty rigging and custom work," Champion President Don Gelestino tells ELEVATOR WORLD. Hollister-Whitney geared traction and Imperial AC gearless traction machines are being used. The system includes 2000- and 3000-lb capacity elevators that serve all 19 floors. Extending special thanks to Frank Feniello and Stirling Collins for bringing the project to Champion, Gelestino said his team is "dedicated to delivering superior service and cutting-edge technology to ensure the elevators at The Plaza operate seamlessly and efficiently, providing the highest level of safety and comfort."

SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT FOR THE EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Submissions are now being accepted for the ELEVATOR WORLD 27th Annual Project of the Year Awards. We are seeking submissions of projects featuring vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation systems with an innovative design, special application or approach that solved a major problem or overcame a unique challenge. Projects will be judged on innovation, originality and creativity, challenges overcome, installation methods and techniques and use of advanced technology and overall quality of presentation. This year's categories are Elevators, New Construction; Elevators, Modernization; Escalators, New Construction; Escalators, Modernization; Moving Walks; Inclined Elevators; Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts; Private-Residence Elevators; and Special-Purpose Lifts. All entries will be judged and categorized as received by an impartial panel of experienced industry experts and professionals. Winning entries will be published in the January 2025 issue of ELEVATOR WORLD. Winners in each category will be acknowledged with an award of recognition. The submission deadline is September 30.

INSPECTOR TRAINEE PROGRAM CLASS STARTS SEPTEMBER 16
NAESA International has announced that the Elevator Inspector Trainee Program is now open for registration. This program was developed over the past few years with members of the elevator inspector community to assist hiring authorities with code training for future elevator inspectors. Read more here

The Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) asks interested parties to mark their calendars for upcoming Central Region (CR) meetings and a CECA/Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) Townhall meeting. Planned at the Sandman Signature Mississauga Hotel this year are a CECA CR meeting at 4 p.m. on September 12 in the Legacy B room and a CECA/TSSA Townhall meeting at 12:30 p.m. in Legacy A and B rooms with special guest TSSA Regional Supervisor Dean McLellan. OTIS BRAZIL FACTORY RECEIVES ISO 45001 CERTIFICATION
Otis Brazil's factory in São Bernardo do Campo recently received ISO 45001 certification, an international standard that specifies the requirements and good practices for effective occupational health and safety management systems. ISO 45001 was developed to reduce factors that can cause occupational accidents, injuries and illnesses, and also provides guidelines for the continuous improvement of occupational health and safety performance and management systems in the workplace. KONE LANDS 36-UNIT ORDER FOR 2FA TWO-TOWER LONDON DEVELOPMENT
KONE announced on July 18 it has won a contract to supply 36 vertical-transportation units for the 2 Finsbury Avenue (2FA) development in Broadgate, the largest pedestrianized neighborhood in the City of London. The order comprises 19 MiniSpaceTM and 12 MonoSpace® 700 elevators, as well as three energy-efficient TransitMasterTM 110 escalators. The KONE E-LinkTM remote-monitoring solution will also be incorporated. Developed by British Land and GIC, 2FA is a mixed-used project that consists of the 36-story East Tower and the 21-story West Tower, linked by a 12-story podium. Slated for completion in 2027, the project aims to be a new benchmark in sustainable workplace design in London. It will be an all-electric development. Other key players include architect 3XN London, with which KONE worked closely to design custom car finishes, and main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd.
 
INNOVALIFT TO ACQUIRE TÃœRKIYE LIFT COMPONENT MANUFACTURER ARKEL
Innovalift, a group of companies that designs, manufactures and installs vertical and inclined platform lifts, on July 19 announced it signed an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in Arkel, a leading manufacturer of elevator components based in Istanbul, Türkiye. Read more here
PARIS HERITAGE DAYS TO FEATURE EIFFEL TOWER ELEVATOR
For the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) on September 21 and 22 in Paris, the city is offering an opportunity to discover the secrets of the capital's most emblematic monument: the Eiffel Tower, which is more than 300-m high and has dominated the capital since 1889, Sortir à Paris reports. The 2024 Heritage Days program at the Eiffel Tower invites visitors to discover the machinery of one of its historic elevators. During a guided tour led by a Tower technician and accompanied by a receptionist, guests can discover the workings of this unique piece of heritage, which transports visitors up to the second floor at a height of 115 m, and can enter the technical gallery of the historic elevator machinery on the east pillar. The 30-min guided tour is free of charge and will be conducted exclusively in French, in groups of 15. The free tour is by reservation only, which opens in September.
 
ZIEHL-ABEGG EVENTS IN VIETNAM SEE SUCCESS
Ziehl-Abegg, a leader in drive and control technology, held two seminars in June on elevator technology in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in collaboration with Doza Technology, Machine Maker reports. Each event — with a theme of "Reliability and Sustainability in the Elevator Industry with German and Swiss Components" — drew 80 participants, including managing directors, developers, service technicians and elevator operators. OTIS INDONESIA E&E REPLACEMENT AND MODERNIZATION AT JAKARTA MALL
Otis Indonesia announced on July 18 it has been selected by the Millennium Mall for an elevator and escalator (E&E) replacement and modernization project. The division of Otis Worldwide Corp. will modernize 39 units, including replacing 25 escalators and eight elevators, and modernizing six escalators at the mall, located in the heart of Jakarta. SCHMERSAL ESTABLISHES NEW SUBSIDIARY IN HO CHI MINH CITY
The Schmersal Group, an international machine safety leader, on July 19 announced a new subsidiary in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: Schmersal Vietnam Co. Ltd. The subsidiary is being led by Vietnam Country Manager Nguyen Huy Truong, who has more than 19 years' experience in industrial automation and mechanical engineering. INDIA HOSPITAL HOLDS ELEVATOR SAFETY EVENT FOR STAFF
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu held an awareness session on the "Safe Use of Elevator and Escalator," aimed at educating hospital attendants, security staff and other supporting personnel on the efficient and secure use of vertical transportation, the Daily Excelsior reports. DESTINATION ELEVATORS IMPROVE WAIT TIMES FOR CRUISE GOERS
Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas cruise ship, which departs from Florida's Port Canaveral to destinations in the Bahamas, has added destination elevators after Icon of the Seas, which launched earlier this year, earned rave reviews for these types of elevators, according to Royal Caribbean Blog. Cruise ships often experience crowding issues when waiting for an elevator, but with destination elevators, guests can go to a panel in the elevator lobby and select the floor they want. NYT PIECE USES ELEVATOR TO EXPLAIN HOUSING COSTS AND OTHER WOES
Stephen Jacob Smith, founder and executive director of the Center for Building in North America, used the elevator to explain why housing costs have skyrocketed, among other woes, in a guest essay for The New York Times (NYT). He begins with a personal story about how he had to climb stairs to reach his third-floor Brooklyn apartment post-pandemic, becoming dizzy and winded because he was ill. Read more here

ASME FOUNDATION RECEIVES US$3.975-MILLION DOL APPRENTICESHIP GRANT
The ASME Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), has been awarded a US$3.975-million four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to develop and implement a national apprentice program in mechanical engineering technology. The ASME Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) will provide additional education and training for 270 community college engineering students and place them into entry-level engineering and technician positions.
