Read more here HITACHI AWARDED LARGEST CONTRACT IN SINGAPORE FOR 450 LIFTS Hitachi, Ltd. announced that Hitachi Elevator Asia Pte. Ltd. has been awarded the supply and installation of 450 lifts by the Housing & Development Board (HBD) in Singapore for high-rise residential buildings to be built from 2027 to 2029 in various public housing areas in the country. This is by far the largest order for Hitachi group's lifts and escalators in Singapore, surpassing the 300 units ordered for HDB in 2019, 2020 and 2022. Read more here OTIS CUTS SALES VIEW WITH SLOWDOWN IN CHINA AND U.S. Otis Worldwide lowered its 2024 net sales forecast on July 24 on softening demand for its new equipment from North America and China, Reuters reports. The company expects its full-year net sales to be between US$14.3 billion and US$14.5 billion, down from its previous forecast of US$14.5 billion to US$14.8 billion. Read more here | | EUROPEAN LIFT MAKERS 2Q ORDER INTAKE ABOVE EXPECTATIONS Schindler and KONE posted second-quarter order intake above expectations, but warned China's construction slowdown was weighing on new installations, Reuters reports. Schindler's order intake was down 0.4% from a year earlier in local currencies, but just ahead of analysts' forecast in a poll compiled by Vara, and the volume of new installations in China fell between 5% and 10% in the quarter compared to last year. KONE's order intake grew 3.6% in local currencies, surpassing analysts' forecast by about 3%, based on Vara consensus, and the 11.1% fall in second-quarter sales for its new buildings business was mostly due to its performance in China. Chinese construction starts fell by nearly 24% in the first half of 2024, but renovation and maintenance business will continue to grow around the world. Schindler is less exposed to China with approximately 15% of its revenue coming from China last year, versus 30% for Kone, according to estimates. Although Schindler confirmed its outlook for the year, it warned that new installations in the Asia-Pacific region without China would be worse than expected. In addition, urbanizing India is a key growth market for both companies. Advertisement | | | CHAMPION COMMENCES US$6-MILLION-PLUS CO-OP CITY PROJECT Champion Elevator Corp. announced it has kicked off phase two of its US$6-million-plus modernization of the garage elevators at Co-op City in Bronx, NY. Champion's Don Gelestino, Frank Feniello and Robert Masterson are leading the ambitious project, which involves full-service maintenance for 180 elevators and modernization of 16 passenger cars. The Champion team is collaborating with suppliers Vantage and Hollister-Whitney, and the elevators' appearance will get a boost from new stainless-steel cabs and entrances from United Vertical Group. The project is expected to take approximately 22 weeks. "These essential elevators, crucial for daily operations within Co-op City, will undergo a comprehensive transformation to enhance efficiency, safety and reliability," Champion stated. With a classification of overhead gearless roped 1:1 and a capacity of 2000 lb, these elevators will become "paragons of modern engineering and design." FUJITEC CHENNAI, INDIA, TRAINING INSTITUTE AUTHORIZED AS A JIIM The Fujitec JIM training institute in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, established by Japan's Fujitec Co. Ltd. in November 2023, has been authorized as a Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIIM) by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Fujitec announced on July 25. Read more here | | TKE COMPLETES TWO-YEAR ELEVATOR MODERNIZATION AT CARLSBAD CAVERNS TK Elevator (TKE) announced on July 30 it has completed a two-year elevator modernization at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico that added two new traction elevators to transport visitors nearly 750 ft below the surface. The units traverse the distance — roughly the height of the Hoover Dam — at 700 ft/min. Welcoming nearly 500,000 visitors annually, Carlsbad Caverns consists of more than 100 limestone caves, making it a site of scientific and public interest. One of the early elevator systems, installed in 1955, required frequent repair and modernization to maintain safe and convenient travel. The revamped system includes modernized hoistway divider beams, rails, machines, cables, car slings and elevator roofs. System designers used galvanized and stainless steel to ensure durability and corrosion resistance for a reliable and long-lasting elevator system. IUEC ENDORSES KAMALA HARRIS FOR PRESIDENT The International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC), headquartered in Columbia, Maryland, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in the 2024 election, with IUEC General President Frank J. Christensen issuing a July 25 statement that outlined Harris' support of blue-collar jobs.
