NAESA WELCOMES EDUCATION PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR
NAESA International has announced Mandy Ortega as its new NAESA Education Program administrator. Ortega comes to NAESA with an elevator background and has worked for the State of Washington in the Elevator Program since 2016. Ortega started her new role with NAESA on January 6. Read more here
 
LEIA ANNOUNCES PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT APPOINTMENTS
Karis Walker, head of Commercial at TK Elevator (TKE), has been appointed president and Andrew Renwick, managing director (MD) at Caltech Lifts, has been appointed as vice president of the U.K.'s Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA). Walker succeeds Paul Turner, technical director at Schindler, who has held the role since 2023. Turner will continue to work closely with LEIA to develop its strategy as ex-president and Ex Officio member. Read more here

LIFT AI ACQUIRES eMCP TO "TRANSFORM ELEVATOR MAINTENANCE AND MANAGEMENT"
Lift AI, based in Detroit, announced on January 7 it has acquired Tennessee-headquartered eMCP LLC, a pioneer in automated maintenance control programs (MCPs) for elevators. Lift AI said the acquisition enhances the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI-driven solutions provider's role as the "leading platform driving innovation, transparency and accountability in the global elevator industry." ITALIAN COMPONENTS DISTRIBUTOR DONATI ACQUIRES ELVACENTER
Donati S.p.A., a distributor of elevator and escalator components headquartered in Milan, Italy, announced on January 14 it has acquired Elvacenter, a company active in Belgium and the Netherlands. The acquisition consolidates Donati's leadership position in Europe with more than 16,000 items in stock and 5,000 customers, achieving more than EUR38 million (US$28.7 million) in aggregated revenue. "The acquisition of Elvacenter is another important step toward the internationalization of Donati, which is simultaneously growing its branches in Germany and France," major shareholder of Donati and Senior Partner of EOS Investment Management Gianno Galasso said. "With direct entry into the Belgian and Dutch markets through an already well-positioned operator, Donati accelerates its geographical expansion in Europe."

PETERLIN NAMED VDA SVP OF REGIONAL OPERATIONS
VDA Inc., headquartered in East Hanover, New Jersey, announced in January it has named Jim Peterlin as senior vice president (SVP) of Regional Operations, overseeing the Northwest, West, Southwest, Midwest, Northeast and Southeast. JAPAN ELEVATOR SERVICE HOLDINGS OPENS NEW REGIONAL HEAD OFFICE
Japan Elevator Service Holdings Co., Ltd. opened a new regional head office, in Kita Shinetsu, in Nagano, Japan, on January 1, 2025, the Business Insider reports. The company aims to enhance its service delivery to customers with a strategic move of its head office that does not alter the number of domestic locations. Read more here

KONE VT FOR RESORT AND COMMERCIAL HUB IN CAMBODIA
KONE announced on January 9 it was awarded a comprehensive vertical-transportation (VT) contract by Chinese foreign-investment firm Peninsula Bay Investment Co., Ltd., to provide a suite of People Flow® solutions to Peninsula Integrated Resort in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Aimed to attract both foreign tourists and businesses upon opening in 2026, the beachfront development will be served by 38 N MonoSpace®, two S MonoSpace, 57 N MiniSpaceTM, 10 MiniSpace high-speed and one TranSysTM DX heavy duty elevators. ROBOTS INTEGRATE WITH OTIS ELEVATORS AT MMUH IN U.K.
Otis' New Equipment team enabled the integration of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), or robots, with seven of 28 Otis elevators serving the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) in Smethwick near Birmingham, U.K., Otis announced on LinkedIn. The technology allows the AGVs to carry supplies such as pharmaceuticals, linens, clinical waste and operating theater equipment from the MMUH warehouse to the hospital wards, freeing up staff to spend more time with patients. Hilliard offers its customers two styles of spring applied electric released brakes that can be easily fitted to "A" frame elevator drives. These brakes are designed to apply when unintended travel of the car occurs. Hilliard offers a friction disc plate-style brake that attaches to the drive shaft of the pulley and a caliper-style that acts on a ring attached to the pulley. These brakes are an alternative to a rope gripper when performing a modernization job which requires lifting or moving a drive or extra construction to the elevator. NAESA NEW YORK ELEVATOR MECHANIC SEMINAR COMING UP IN BLAUVELT
Elevator Conference of New York reminds interested parties that NAESA International will offer a one-day, in-person Code Update Seminar for New York state-licensed elevator mechanics on January 15 in Blauvelt, NY. All state-licensed elevator mechanics must complete 8 h of continuing education each year for their renewal application to be granted and to maintain their license. This class can also be used for NAESA QEI (Qualified Elevator Inspector) training. Read more here
 
REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR LIFTEX 2025 IN LONDON
Organizers of LIFTEX 2025, the U.K.'s only dedicated exhibition for the lift, escalator and access industry, announce that free registration for the event, planned on June 11-12 at ExCeL in London, is open. Organized by the Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) with Oliver Greening as show director, LIFTEX will bring together manufacturers, suppliers, installers and specifiers of vertical-transportation products and services. LIFTEX 2025 will include more than 100 U.K. and international exhibitors; free seminars on such topics as modernization, evacuation, safety and standards; and networking. "LIFTEX provides an unrivaled opportunity to explore the latest products and services, exchange ideas and address the challenges facing the industry," LEIA stated.

OAK ROW EQUITIES ACQUIRES 4.25-ACRE MIAMI WATERFRONT PROPERTY FOR DEVELOPMENT
Oak Row Equities and Mariposa Real Estate have made an agreement to acquire Aimco's 4.25-acre waterfront property at 1001 and 1111 Brickell Bay Drive in Miami, Florida, for US$520 million, Florida YIMBY reports. Expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025, the deal will be the largest single land acquisition in South Florida to date. Read more here

UNION CLUB OF BRITISH COLUMBIA GETTING NEW ELEVATOR
The elevator at the Union Club of British Columbia (BC) in Victoria, BC, Canada, will soon be removed for a new "state-of-the-art" elevator, according to the Times Colonist. In the past 112 years, what is considered a "hidden gem" within this private club has moved countless members, guests, staff, freight, food and furniture between four floors of the historic building. It's not the oldest elevator in the province but is believed to be one of the oldest still in operation, the source reports. Read more here
 
HOSPITAL ELEVATOR FALL IN GREECE LEADS TO INJURIES
An investigation has been launched following an elevator accident on January 9 at Athens' Red Cross Hospital in Athens, Greece, where four people were injured, ekathimerini.com is among outlets to report. During the incident, the elevator fell from the second floor. Four were injured in the fall, including two paramedics from a private ambulance service, a patient and the patient's escort. U.K.'S HSE CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Great Britain's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) celebrated its 50th Anniversary on January 1, half a century after its official launch on the first day of 1975. The HSE was established to enforce workplace health and safety legislation in the U.K. following the introduction of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which itself turned 50 on July 31, 2024. LCD ELEVATOR SYSTEM FOR NEW CHURCH FACILITY IN MANHATTAN
LCD Elevator Repair, Inc., headquartered in Mineola, NY, tells ELEVATOR WORLD it provided a two-elevator system for the 12-story Redeemer Presbyterian Church mixed-used facility at 150 East 91st Street in the Carnegie Hill section of the Upper East Side (UES) in Manhattan, NY. One of the gearless overhead traction elevators travels 11 stories and 146 ft with a capacity of 2500 lb, and the other travels 12 stories and 157 ft with a capacity of 3500 lb. Both travel at up to 500 ft/min. Both units have Hollister-Whitney machines; Motion Control Engineering controllers; Monitor Elevator Products fixtures; EDI/ECI cabs and entrances; GAL mechanical door equipment; and slings, platforms, rail brackets, governors and buffers by Hollister-Whitney. LCD project managers were David Regiec and Glen Clarke, who worked with general contractor Pavarini McGovern LLC. Designed by STUDIOS Architecture, the 170-ft-tall building includes a 300-person-capacity fellowship hall, a 600-seat auditorium, 17 classrooms and a catering kitchen, New York YIMBY reported.
 
EASTERN ELEVATOR PROVIDES MRL ELEVATOR FOR BROOKLYN BUILDING
Alter Weinberger, president of Eastern Elevator, with offices in Brooklyn, NY, and Davie, Florida, tells ELEVATOR WORLD his company provided one traction machine-room-less (MRL) elevator for 320 Linden Boulevard in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Designed by LND Architect, the seven-story building includes 38 residences, as well as amenities such as a shared laundry room, uncovered parking, bike storage lockers and a virtual doorman. DEMOLITION COMPLETE TO MAKE WAY FOR FIVE BROOKLYN TOWERS
Demolition is complete at 275 Flatbush Avenue Extension in Downtown Brooklyn, NY, to make way for a conjoined series of five 27-story, 293-ft-tall towers containing 350 residences, New York YIMBY reported earlier this month. Designed by J Fankl Architects and developed by Jacob Kohn of The Jay Group, each structure will contain 90 residences and two cellar levels. Read more here

KUALA LUMPUR HOUSING RESIDENTS FACE ELEVATOR ISSUES
One of three elevators damaged in an 18-story building in a public housing block in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was repaired in early January and is back in operation for residents while the other two are still in the process of being repaired, Bernama reports. The lift was repaired by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). Read more here
 
PRIVATE ELEVATOR AND POOL BRING LUXURY TO NEW LEVELS IN DUBAI
An exclusive, 35,000-ft2 "ultra penthouse" at the planned Regent Residences Dubai in Dubai Marasi Marina incorporates both a private elevator and a private infinity pool, bringing luxury to new levels in the U.A.E. city known for opulence, CNN is among outlets to report. The 43-ft "sky pool" will link the development's two, 591-ft-tall skyscrapers, worth approximately US$1 billion and scheduled for completion in 2027. Read more here

DUBAI'S RTA SEEKS CONTRACTOR FOR NEXT METRO STATION UPGRADE
Dubai's Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) recently sought out contractors for a contract to upgrade the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station expansion, Meed reports. The notice for the design-and-build contract, part of the RTA's 2018 plan to upgrade four Dubai Metro stations, was issued on January 6 and had a deadline of January 10. The contract covers the lift and station expansion, including replacing the existing pod entrance with a three-story building, which will provide access to the Dubai Mall link bridge at the concourse level and a direct connection to the Rashidya platform. Three new hydraulic lifts and four escalators will also be added to the station, as well as two new hydraulic lifts and escalators added to the Sheikh Zayed roadside extension serving the U.A.E. Exchange platform.
