The Elevator Conference of New York (ECNY) Board of Directors (BoD) has announced ECNY 2025 events and the deadline for scholarship application submissions, which is March 14. The first event is the ECNY Vendor Appreciation and Networking Rooftop Extravaganza at 230 Fifth in the Flatiron District of Manhattan on April 8. COBIANCHI LIFTTEILE AG NAMES ROHR AS NEW CEO
Stephan Rohr, former chief technology officer of ELGO Batscale AG, has been named CEO of Cobianchi Liftteile AG, a Switzerland-based company engineering and manufacturing progressive safety devices for all kind of lifts. Rohr spent eight years with Liechtenstein-based ELGO, which provides innovative solutions, including magnetic tape-based measuring systems for lift position determination, for the industry. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR 51ST CECA CONVENTION
Registration is now open for Canadian Elevator Contractors Association's (CECA) 51st Convention, hosted by Alcor Elevator, to be held on June 9-12 in Niagara Falls. The convention will be held at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre with Wednesday/Thursday exhibit days. The host hotel is the Marriott on the Falls. This year's event includes golf, two days of exhibits, a QEI prep course, additional education, events and more. This year's gala night will be held at the Niagara Falls Power Plant, with the Thirsty Thursday fun night to be held at Wayne Gretzky's Winery & Distillery in Niagara in the Lakes winery district. Municipal authorities in Bishkek, the capital city of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, have allocated KGS165 million (US$1.8 million) to replace approximately 100 outdated elevators in the city, 24 KG reports. Bishkek Vice Mayor Ramiz Aliev announced the allocation at a meeting of the Committee on Budget, Economic and Fiscal Policy of the Parliament. Read more here

KONE announced on January 28 it received an order to provide 21 passenger elevators for Aga Hall Estate in Mumbai, India, which consists of 45- and 56-story towers containing 349 luxury residences. Slated for completion in 2027, Aga Hall Estate will be served by 19 MiniSpaceTM and two MonoSpace® energy-efficient elevators with the KONE Destination Control System. Part of a broader trend in the city center where limited space is driving construction of taller buildings, Aga Hall Estate is being developed by Prince Aly Khan Hospital Charitable Trust. On December 7, 2024, the nonprofit WheeLog organization and Fujitec's Technology Research Department, which conducts technological research on elevators, hosted an online discussion called "The Wheelchair Users X Fujitec Staff's Discussion in 2024." The online discussion was held as part of the research of universal designs and focused on the use of mirrors, the position of buttons, the method of using a door-open holding button and other issues. California fire department crews rescued a person stuck in an elevator at a cement plant in the Lebec area on Monday while performing maintenance on it, Bakersfield Now reports. On January 21, there were reports of a person trapped in an elevator. The worker was found on top of an elevator, 20 ft above the ground. Read more here
DEADLY APARTMENT FIRE LEAVES ELEVATORS WATERLOGGED
Residents of 35 Brock Street, one of the Marina Towers, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, were without operational elevators for at least 24 h due to a fatal fire that occurred on the morning of January 27, The Public Record (TPR) reports. TPR stated that the building's two elevators were submerged in water after fire suppression operations flooded the shafts. The building's property management company is working to begin repair efforts. "Car 2" was lifted above the water and hoped to be repaired, with replacement parts installed, by the end of January 27. Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said that at approximately 10:16 a.m., emergency dispatchers received reports of people trapped inside the apartment and that firefighters were unable to get to the apartment due to the intensity of the fire.
