COSTS FOR SAN DIEGO GOVERNMENT TOWER'S ELEVATOR REPAIRS SOAR
San Diego City Council members approved a contract extension with Otis that adds US$1 million to the original US$3 million budget for emergency repairs to the elevators serving the Civic Center Plaza — an 18-story, midcentury office tower housing more than 800 city employees — ordered more than five years ago, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. City real estate officials were told in 2019 that the condition of all six elevators serving the tower posed a "serious safety risk" to San Diego workers, and the city signed a no-bid contract with Otis to complete the work by 2022. Issues including the COVID-19 pandemic, asbestos and installation of a new HVAC system, waylaid plans to complete the work by that time, however. Michael Zuccet, a former City Council member who now represents thousands of workers as general manager of the San Diego Municipal Employees Association, said he is not surprised the work is taking so long, since asbestos removal must be performed when the building is empty, and the city is understaffed. The new target date for completion is December 2025.

RHODE ISLAND THEATER BALCONY NOW ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL
The United, a theater in Westerly, Rhode Island, held a "lift-off" ceremony in late December to officially christen its new elevator, which is now handicap accessible, The Westerly Sun reports. The elevator allows the theater to serve differently abled guests by making the building's balcony accessible for all. In addition, the elevator "enhances our lobby and audience experience," and, "in the true spirit of the organization" is "beautifully complemented by art," according to officials. The referenced art is a photo mural papered inside the interior walls of the elevator shaft that was designed by two Westerly High School students who created the mural for their senior projects by using archival photographs of the United — from its early days as a vaudeville venue in 1926 to its years as a movie house to its current-day renaissance. The students arranged the photos as a "journey through time."

SPAIN SKI LIFT INCIDENT LEADS TO INJURIES
A chairlift accident at the Astún resort, located in the Aragon region of the Spanish Pyrenees mountains near the border with France, has left 10 people injured, including two women in intensive care, BBC News is among outlets to report. The incident seems to be the result of a pulley failure that caused a cable to slacken and some chairs to drop to the ground, throwing skiers into the snow. Initial reports said 30 people had been hurt, but local media later reported that 17 needed medical attention. According to a local broadcaster, a pulley at one end of the chairlift came loose and part of the structure supporting it collapsed, causing a cable to lose tension and several seats to fall. Those left hanging on the 15-m-high chairlift were helped down. Some of the injured were taken to the hospital. The cause of the incident is not yet known.
