On February 24, TK Elevator (TKE) and Alat, a Saudi Public Investment Fund company, announced they are forming a EUR160-million (US$167-million) joint venture (JV) to manufacture vertical-transportation (VT) solutions including elevators, escalators and moving walks in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) to support large-scale developments in KSA and the greater Middle East and North Africa region. In the deal expected to close in the third quarter, Alat also becomes a direct TKE shareholder and member of the current investment consortium with a 15% stake. TKE says it will bring Alat and Saudi Arabia leading technology, manufacturing expertise and safety methodology, as the JV will serve as an innovation hub that includes a comprehensive training center. "This partnership marks another important milestone in our transformation journey and represents a new era that underscores TKE's active participation in the upcoming development supercycle in KSA," TKE CEO Uday Yadav said.

Otis announced on February 17 that Otis Panama has been selected to provide maintenance for more than 200 pieces of vertical-transportation (VT) equipment on Line 1 of the Panama Metro over the next four years. Most of the 60 elevators and 158 escalators were installed by Otis in 2013. In addition to Line 1, Otis Panama provided more than 220 elevators and escalators for Line 2 in 2016. HIPPODROME'S HISTORIC MANUAL ELEVATOR BEING RESTORED
The City of Gainesville's Wild Spaces & Public Places Department and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs announced that the US$135,799 project to restore the Hippodrome's historic elevator has begun, reports Alachua Chronicle. The Hippodrome, completed in 1911, served as a U.S. Post Office, Federal Courthouse and U.S. Land Office until 1964. TEI Group tells ELEVATOR WORLD it will modernize 10 elevators — including installation of three new units — at 235 East 42nd Street, the 33-story former Pfizer headquarters that is Manhattan, NY's largest office-to-residential conversion. Torremolinos City Council announced on February 12 that it will soon charge a fee to visitors, except for children, seniors and the mobility-impaired, for elevator access to the Torremolinos beach in Costa del Sol, Spain, Travel and Tour World is among outlets to report. The per trip charge will apply to the use of the three elevators that provide access to the area. Refurbishments for the 33-year-old elevator in Victoria Hall in Petrolia, Ontario, Canada, will take place in January 2026, The Independent reports. The Town of Petrolia is setting aside CAD118,000 (US$82,856) to fix the old elevator between theater seasons. In a report to the town's council, Julie Bullock, director of parks and recreation for the town, said there had been two incidents last fall where people were stuck in the elevator at Victoria Hall "for a short period of time" because the doors wouldn't open. 6-YEAR-OLD TRAPPED IN ELEVATOR SHAFT IN INDIA DIES
A 6-year-old boy who became trapped between an elevator doorframe and shaft wall at an apartment building in Hyderabad, India, died on February 22 due to multiple organ failure while undergoing treatment, The Times of India is among outlets to report. Read more here
TATLIFT PLANS FOR ELEVATOR PRODUCTION IN KASHKADARYA
Tatlift, a Tatarstan-based company, has begun planning an elevator production project in the Kashkadarya region of Uzbekistan, reports UZ Daily. Tatlift representatives visited the "UzElectroTechIndustry" Association to meet with Jahongir Jamalov, deputy chairman of the association; Gulshat Zagidullina, Tatlift's general director; Alisher Zakirov, deputy khokim of the Kashkadarya region; and other officials. FAILURE
On February 11, all elevators inside West Suburban Medical Center's campus buildings in River Forest, Illinois, passed inspections for the first time since March 2024, reports the Wednesday Journal of Oak Park and River Forest. Having failed several past-due category 1 tests that assess elevator safety causing the hospital to receive several letters of violation from the Village of River Forest, West Suburban was found liable for a US$750 fine for the elevators on its River Forest campus. CASTRO STATION ESCALATOR DOWN FOR TWO AND A HALF WEEKS
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency announced that starting the week of February 17 the south escalator at the Castro Muni Station would be out of service for two and a half weeks, The Bay Area Reporter reports. The agency stated that the escalator closure will be part of the concrete walkway replacement for the installation of the new four-stop elevator being installed at the Castro Station that will temporarily block the south escalator. First proposed in 2016, the new elevator will increase accessibility to the station, as the current elevator is across the street from its main entrance. The agency stated that people can access the escalator on the north side to access to the station during the closure.
