CHAMPION ELEVATOR WELCOMES GUARINO AS CHIEF SALES OFFICER
Champion Elevator Corp., headquartered in Manhattan, NY, has welcomed Robert Guarino as chief sales officer. NAESA ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR EASTERN REGION CHAIR
NAESA International invites members in good standing to apply to be nominated as chair of the Eastern Region, a position currently held by Christopher M. Dodds of ATIS. WALLEN APPOINTED MD OF HYDROWARE AS GERMANY TAKES PRECEDENCE
Sweden-based Hydroware GmbH announced that David Wallen, with an impressive track record in the German lift market, has been appointed managing director (MD), effective in March. Wallen succeeds Volker Hager, whom Hydroware thanked for his contributions over the past seven years in shaping the company. With an academic background in mechatronics, Wallen began his career with other companies in the early 2000s as an on-site installer for new lifts before moving on to assembly foreman, and later, sales engineer. KONE'S 4Q 2024 EARNINGS BEAT ESTIMATE
Finnish OEM KONE posted 4th Quarter (4Q) 2024 earnings on January 30 that were above estimates and expects its adjusted profit margin to improve in 2025 and its sales to grow slightly, Reuters is among outlets to reports. KONE CEO Philippe Delorme said the company continues to grow at a healthy rate, with orders increasing more than 10% outside of China. Read more here

IN MEMORIAM: ROSE MARIE MAKRUGIN
Calgary, Canada, native Rose Marie Makrugin, who worked at C&M Elevator prior to its sale to Otis and helped host the 1980 Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) Convention in Calgary, passed away at the age of 87 on January 17 with her husband of almost 66 years, Nikolas, by her side. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Nikolas; her brother, Paul Conklin; and her children, Shelly and Jarre and their families," CECA stated. Makrugin grew up by the corner of the Bow River in what is now part of Shouldice Park. After spending 26 years in Calgary's Brentwood community, the Makrugins moved to Strathmore where they made many new friends. An exceptional seamstress who loved sewing outfits for her granddaughters, Makrugin enjoyed music, travel and get-togethers with friends and family. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to an Alzheimer's or animal charity.

OTIS LOWERS EARNINGS EXPECTATIONS ON CONTINUED WEAK DEMAND IN CHINA
Otis expects full-year net sales of US$14.1 billion-US$14.4 billion, below estimates of US$14.6 billion as the Chinese property market crisis continues to weaken demand for new equipment, Reuters is among outlets to report. According to a January 29 4th Quarter (4Q) 2024 earnings call, net sales in 4Q 2024 fell 7.4% to US$1.36 billion while total net sales rose 1.5% to US$3.68 billion thanks to strong demand for maintenance and repair. MARINE INNOVATIONS ANNOUNCES NEW CARRIAGE DESIGN
On February 3, Marine Innovations, the Minnesota-based manufacturer of trams and inclined elevators for North America, Central America and the Caribbean, announced a new carriage design as an upgrade to its existing carriage offerings. The ingenious new design boasts a refined door location allowing for two aluminum seats and is comfortable for up to four passengers. The seats fold up to allow for more space to carry items. The 32-in. wide seats meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements while allowing for installation flexibility. Carriage dimensions are 45 and 5/8 in. X 60-in. with inside floor dimensions of 41 and 5/8 in. X 48 and 1/2 in. Non-skid aluminum flooring enhances safety, and powder coating delivers a lifetime, corrosion-free finish available in several color options. This carriage is standard for Marine Innovations' 860-lb Classic Bank Hoist and Ultra Bank Hoist systems.
OTIS INDIA'S FIRST USE OF COMPASS 360 FOR HYDERABAD TOWERS
Otis will install 21 elevators at The Trilight, a luxury residential project consisting of three interconnected towers up to 60 stories tall in Hyderabad, India, Otis President, Chair and CEO Judy Marks said during a January 29 earnings call. The project, developed by P Mangatram and Dé BlueOak, will be Otis India's first use of the Compass 360 destination-management system in a residential project, she said. Read more here

OTIS TO INSTALL 18 VT UNITS AT NEW EIT OXFORD CAMPUS
Otis will install 18 vertical-transportation (VT) units — 17 elevators and one platform lift — at the Ellison Institute of Technologies (EIT) Oxford Interdisciplinary Research and Development campus in Oxford, U.K. Scheduled for completion in 2027, it will incorporate more than 30,000 m2 of research laboratory space and oncology and preventive-care clinic, as well as educational and gathering spaces. IN MEMORIAM: JAMES MIKEL "JIM" BROWN
ATTA Elevators, a full-service elevator and escalator company headquartered in Ontario, Canada, announced its "beloved colleague, brother and friend" James Mikel "Jim" Brown passed away unexpectedly on January 28. Brown had been part of the ATTA Elevators team since its inception in 2022, becoming known for his passion and dedication to the brand. He consistently fostered a warm and welcoming atmosphere among vendors and colleagues of both ATTA and Modern Elevator, which ATTA acquired in 2022. Brown's survivors include partner, Tammy; children, Jessica, Natalie, Briana and Reno; granddaughter, Isla; siblings Jeff and Judy; and many other family members and friends. "As we reflect on the many memories shared with Jim, we are reminded of the joy and passion he brought to the workplace," ATTA Elevators said. "His commitment, kindness, sense of humor and strong work ethic will be profoundly missed more than words can express."
NINE NEW VT UNITS FOR MISSISSIPPI CAPITAL AIRPORT
The Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport in Jackson, Mississippi, will be getting nine new vertical-transportation (VT) units this year, The Northside Sun reports. The US$5.3-million project, which includes replacing all four escalators and five of seven elevators in the terminal building, is being made possible by the U.S. Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminals Program. OTIS TO INSTALL AND MAINTAIN 142 VT UNITS FOR IMSS
During a January 29 earnings call, Otis President, Chair and CEO Judy Marks said the company will install 142 vertical-transportation (VT) units at Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) facilities. The elevators will help support the agency's mission by providing safe and reliable VT at 41 public clinics and hospitals throughout the country, she said. Upon completion, these units will transition to Otis' maintenance portfolio, joining the nearly 600 IMSS units already serviced by Otis.

START ELEVATOR'S O'SHEA DISCUSSES 2025 BUSINESS DRIVERS, CHALLENGES
Jack O'Shea, owner and president of Bronx, NY-based Start Elevator, recently discussed with ELEVATOR WORLD what's driving business and creating challenges for his company in 2025. With a roughly equal footprint across all five NYC boroughs and a wide array of customers, Start is optimistic about falling interest rates and new codes that will require compliance by the end of 2026, O'Shea said. MODERN ELEVATOR UNITS FOR NYC MTA ACCESSIBILITY UPGRADE
The NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced in January that the Woodhaven Boulevard subway station in Woodhaven, Queens, is now fully accessible with two street-to-platform elevators manufactured and installed by Modern Elevator. Modern Elevator worked alongside MLJ Contracting Corp. and TC Electric, LLC, on the station upgrades, which also included two new staircases, upgraded platforms and new fare control areas.
